clans: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died from complications related to cancer. He was 58.

The Latin American leader underwent four surgeries since he was first diagnosed with cancer in June 2011.

His last cancer surgery in Havana, Cuba, on Dec. 11, was followed by several complications including a severe respiratory infection and bleeding. His condition was a source of speculation—there was little information available, and the little information that came to light came from government sources.

On Feb. 18, Chavez had quietly returned to Venezuela from Cuba, but the public hadn’t seen him in months.

He had four children. The president was married to Venezuelan journalist Marisabel Rodriguez from 1997 to 2004. They had a daughter, Rosines Chavez. He had three children with his first wife Nancy Colmenares.

Hugo Chavez: Venezuela’s most controversial leader

Hugo Chavez, a member of the Fifth Republic Movement political party, was first elected as president of Venezuela in 1998 in a landslide election, where he won over 56 percent of the vote. He had remained in power for 14 years, winning three elections.

Chavez won his last six-year term as president in October 2012 and was inaugurated on Jan. 10, 2013, but he couldn’t attend the inauguration because he was in a delicate condition after his surgery in Cuba.

Venezuela’s Constitution states that if the current president dies or is incapacitated in the first four years of their term, a new election must be held within 30 days.

Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias was born on July 28, 1954, in Sabaneta, in the province of Barinas, Venezuela. He was raised in a humble household and like many young Venezuelan men joined the military at 17-years-old for opportunities. He graduated at the top of his class from the Venezuelan Academy of Military Sciences in Caracas.

He was successful in his military career, reaching the rank of army lieutenant colonel and later president. Chavez became known for helping Venezuela’s poor through housing and state-run grocery stores, among other programs.

In 1992, as Venezuela faced austerity measures known as El Caracazo, Chavez initiated a military coup to overthrow President Carlos Andres Perez’s government. However, the coup failed and Chavez was imprisoned for two years. Two years later he was pardoned by President Rafael Caldera.

Chavez’s bold move propelled him into politics where he co-founded the populist movement called the “Bolivarian Revolution” in Venezuela, which nationalized some industries including Venezuela’s prized oil and instituted programs for the poor.

He named the Bolivarian Revolution after Simon Bolivar, the revolutionist who fought against the Spanish empire.

Chavez was not without controversy. His socialist government gained many critics, including the United States, as well as many supporters—many of whom included Latin American leaders and Hollywood elites.

During the Bush administration, Chavez gave one of his most ostentatious speeches to the United Nations where he called President George W. Bush “the devil.” He also accused him of “fighting terror with terror” following the war in Afghanistan.

Ngwakwe: He is dead after much arrogance and undiplomatic leeway and gestures.

Changed constitution several times to make sure he will continue to rule until death.

After calling President G.W. Bush the Devil in the United Nation in New York in USA

President Chavez who was full of himself and never respected his host was shouting, the devil was here yesterday and that the odour of the sulfur was smelling. This he said in reference to President Bush Junior in USA Soil.

He called Obama a disappointment.

Yet, he never ceased to sell oil to USA.

Respect is always reciprocal, and he never had one.
rubbish. Why was US buying venezuelan oil despite chavez`s anti-US posture?

Archmed: After Mandela,I've never seen a leader so loved by the people.A forthnight ago on CNN,i watched as thousands of Venezuelans cried and prayed for his quick recovery, then I wondered how many Nigerians would be so moved if it Mr. Ebele was involved. Its good 2be good
May his gentle soul rest in Perfect Peace!!

He is not loved by all his people my friend, do not be deceived by what you see.
Most of his people do not like him. I have at least three of my colleagues from Venezuela who talk ill of him. This means he is not what you see
on the screen. You can never understand politicians my dear.

Hugo grew very popular among some Venezuelans due to his opposing stance to the west and capitalism. Just like telling poor Nigerians that you want to share Dangote's wealth them.
He played this politics well.

Aside from that, Hugo...just like Gaddafi, Sadam, Osama, Kim jun, Abacha lived a hypocritical life. They partied with world's sexiest women, drank the best wines, rode on luxurious vehicles and stole billions of dollars...while their people wallowed in perjury.

The only thing they had going for them was just to go to the media and say "the west is evil".

You have no evidence that the man lived a hypocritical life. If he does, the West with all their machinery would have dug it our to the public domain.

Hugo Chavez lived for the poor but the Rich guys never liked him because he denied them their looting apparatus.

Do you expect the stealing Americans to tell you he is a good leader?

Ignorance. Those that fight for us we will never appreciate because we are ignorant.

Those you have meet (I guess in US) are among the elites who have a lot to hate him for. He denied them their privileges and so they must hate him. The masses of Venezuela, the poor are happy with him. If the guy is corrupt, US and their machinery would have dug them up and pasted for all of us to see

The Oil wealth of Venezuela is enough for it to be on par with the likes of Kuwait or Emirates or even NORWAY
but they are not.

Hugo Chavez started well with very good intensions, ie bridging the gap btw the rich and poor
but towards the end became power drunk. He amended his constitution to remain in power
And even when he became ill, rather than resign immediately and retire quietly, he decided to cling unto power!!!

Ignorance among Nigerians is too much. If it's not CNN - BBC - it's Wikipedia or some colleagues whom I met at work or in my private University.

I spent a month in Venezuela in 2008 and rolled from Caracas where I stayed for a week, to Barinas, onto Merida and even to Barcelona. You cannot take your facts verbatim of one or twp persons, get off your ass and do your own research. Travel there.

Talk to taxi drivers, housewives, bank managers the unemployed as I did to get a picture of the people. Venezuela is a fractured society between pro and anti Chavez. I can assure you that the three colleagues you spoke to - were middle class or elite beneficiaries of the previous rigid capitalistic system. Ask them who are the people crying in the streets or who voted for him at previous elections - Are they ghosts or mirages?

The majority of the people love him and that is my first hand experience no word of mouth. I encourage you to do the same, or just sit down and take notes while seasoned travellers discuss global issues.

That man was more of a dictator than a leader.

Abi o. Lots of people on NL are commenting on pictures they see on TV all staged managed by the govt not on what they have experienced living in that country.

Everything was under his personal control. You cant even do foreign exchange currency as a business unless you go through some govt agency. He was worse than Sadam Hussain.

Typical naive NL members !

Re: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Is Dead by SELFWORTH: 11:31am On Mar 06, 2013
Ngwakwe: Not even that, I was watching the proceedings on the day he made those comments in the floor of UN General Assembly.

The comments were uncalled for and very undiplomatic and US was his host.

It was unprecedented arrogance.

Thank u.
A lot of NL have very low IQ. They just jump on the bandwagon and comment anyhow.

Ask how many of his fans on NL have ever lived in Venezuela ? Probably hardly any but look at their comments as if he was a saint.

He was a dictator who controlled everything and everyone. He changed the constitution so he can rule forever. Everything you see on TV is nothing but propaganda .

NL members please don't believe everything you read. You can't say he change lives of his people from your experience sitting in your armchair in Niger.

Sure, I won't believe your post. He's a politician and in sure the western media told a lot of partial truths-lies matrix about him. He's not a dictator, he was elected. Some people like him, some don't. Same for Obama. If you live in Alabama and watch only fox news you'll think everyone hates Obama. Same for Hugo. He tried for his people.

As for calling bush the devil, it's poor diplomatic tactic. But with world politics of today, I have little respect for diplomacy. By the way, in my mental dictionary, diplomacy is defined as " how do I fool these goats to get advantage for my country". Note that many Americans and millions of Iraqis will agree with that description of bush. I would never call bush the devil, but his policies sure do reflect the finger of satan.

Finally, nothing exposes American hypocrisy than the fact that all this while Venezuela supplies the US a lot of oil. You would think they would reject doing business with Venezuela.

Ure are a bug twerp. If there's a Chavez in Nigeria that reduced unemployment rate from 20% to barely 7% and reduced poverty from 70% to 40% then in my eyes he's a hero and not what the western media brandishes about his populist ideas. Just wait to see the expression of love that will be poured out by Venezuelans by friday.
