Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈuɣo rafaˈel ˈtʃaβes ˈfɾi.as]; 28 July 1954 – 5 March 2013) was the President of Venezuela, having held that position from 1999 until his death in 2013. He was formerly the leader of the Fifth Republic Movement political party from its foundation in 1997 until 2007, when he became the leader of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV). Following his own political ideology of Bolivarianism and "socialism of the 21st century", he focused on implementing socialist reforms in the country as a part of a social project known as the Bolivarian Revolution, which has seen the implementation of a new constitution, participatory democratic councils, the nationalization of several key industries, increased government funding of health care and education, and significant reductions in poverty, according to government figures.[1]

Born into a working-class family in Sabaneta, Barinas, Chávez became a career military officer, and after becoming dissatisfied with the Venezuelan political system, he founded the secretive Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200 (MBR-200) in the early 1980s to work towards overthrowing it. Chávez led the MBR-200 in an unsuccessful coup d'état against the Democratic Action government of President Carlos Andrés Pérez in 1992, for which he was imprisoned. Released from prison after two years, he founded a social democratic political party, the Fifth Republic Movement, and was elected president of Venezuela in 1998. He subsequently introduced a new constitution which increased rights for marginalized groups and altered the structure of Venezuelan government, and was re-elected in 2000. During his second presidential term, he introduced a system of Bolivarian Missions, Communal Councils and worker-managed cooperatives, as well as a program of land reform, whilst also nationalizing various key industries. On 7 October 2012, Chávez won his country's presidential election for a fourth time, defeating Henrique Capriles, and was elected for another six-year term.[2]

Chávez described his policies as anti-imperialist, and he was a vocal critic of neoliberalism and laissez-faire capitalism. More generally, Chávez was a prominent adversary of the United States' foreign policy.[3] Allying himself strongly with the Communist governments of Fidel and then Raúl Castro in Cuba and the Socialist governments of Evo Morales in Bolivia, Rafael Correa in Ecuador, and Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua, his presidency was seen as a part of the socialist "pink tide" sweeping Latin America. He supported Latin American and Caribbean cooperation and was instrumental in setting up the pan-regional Union of South American Nations, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas, the Bank of the South, and the regional television network TeleSur. Chávez was a highly controversial and divisive figure both at home and abroad.

On 30 June 2011, Chávez stated that he was recovering from an operation to remove an abscessed tumor with cancerous cells.[4] He required a second operation in December 2012.[5] He was to have been sworn in on 10 January 2013, but the National Assembly of Venezuela agreed to postpone the inauguration to allow him time to recuperate and return from a third medical treatment trip to Cuba.[6] Chávez died on 5 March 2013, at the age of 58

Tribute to a Hero

You lived and died a liberator of the oppressed; you fought for the poor and impoverished of your country; you defeated neo-colonial imperialist who stole the resource that God bestowed for the well being of your people and made life unbearable;.

To your source, your creator – our common source, you go back a hero of the masses. As you settle in good fortune which your struggle and sacrifices here on earth earned for you, in the great beyond; remember to put a word on behalf of the suffering ignorant masses of African continents. Remind him of our desperate need of a person of your kind, who can sincerely guide us to freedom; plead with him to grant us, the living, the grace to witness the transformation of African continent for the better in our life time.

As you transmute to the great beyond, as you metamorphose to a form we are yet to comprehend, help with every power you can muster in extending the freedom and liberty you inspired for not only the people of your country, but the land of South America. Help us to make a strong case that Africa’s time should come; that my people should be free.

It is not uncommon that the agents of imperialism have a hand in your early demise; but we know that whatever they can conjure in their evil way is allowed by nature for the greater good of nature and mankind. Let them not celebrate yet; for like a seed; into the soil you go to sprout out the living tree that will give rise to millions of your kind.

Adieu my President, adieu our hero; adieu a man of uncommon courage, adieu a man of love.

Adieu Hugo Chavez!!!

Can you imagine a leader so loved by most of his people that they refused to celebrate New Year. They postponed Ne Year's celebration and spent the day praying. Few people put up decorations and the decorations were torn down. Such love. A woman was crying on CNN (during that New Year period) saying that she owed everything she was to him. No matter the controversy, many of the people loved him. on CNN they were shown praying in church, shedding tears. When will Nigeria have such a leader? One day....i pray.

clans: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died from complications related to cancer. He was 58.

The Latin American leader underwent four surgeries since he was first diagnosed with cancer in June 2011.

His last cancer surgery in Havana, Cuba, on Dec. 11, was followed by several complications including a severe respiratory infection and bleeding. His condition was a source of speculation—there was little information available, and the little information that came to light came from government sources.

On Feb. 18, Chavez had quietly returned to Venezuela from Cuba, but the public hadn’t seen him in months.

He had four children. The president was married to Venezuelan journalist Marisabel Rodriguez from 1997 to 2004. They had a daughter, Rosines Chavez. He had three children with his first wife Nancy Colmenares.

Hugo Chavez: Venezuela’s most controversial leader

Hugo Chavez, a member of the Fifth Republic Movement political party, was first elected as president of Venezuela in 1998 in a landslide election, where he won over 56 percent of the vote. He had remained in power for 14 years, winning three elections.

Chavez won his last six-year term as president in October 2012 and was inaugurated on Jan. 10, 2013, but he couldn’t attend the inauguration because he was in a delicate condition after his surgery in Cuba.

Venezuela’s Constitution states that if the current president dies or is incapacitated in the first four years of their term, a new election must be held within 30 days.

Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias was born on July 28, 1954, in Sabaneta, in the province of Barinas, Venezuela. He was raised in a humble household and like many young Venezuelan men joined the military at 17-years-old for opportunities. He graduated at the top of his class from the Venezuelan Academy of Military Sciences in Caracas.

He was successful in his military career, reaching the rank of army lieutenant colonel and later president. Chavez became known for helping Venezuela’s poor through housing and state-run grocery stores, among other programs.

In 1992, as Venezuela faced austerity measures known as El Caracazo, Chavez initiated a military coup to overthrow President Carlos Andres Perez’s government. However, the coup failed and Chavez was imprisoned for two years. Two years later he was pardoned by President Rafael Caldera.

Chavez’s bold move propelled him into politics where he co-founded the populist movement called the “Bolivarian Revolution” in Venezuela, which nationalized some industries including Venezuela’s prized oil and instituted programs for the poor.

He named the Bolivarian Revolution after Simon Bolivar, the revolutionist who fought against the Spanish empire.

Chavez was not without controversy. His socialist government gained many critics, including the United States, as well as many supporters—many of whom included Latin American leaders and Hollywood elites.

During the Bush administration, Chavez gave one of his most ostentatious speeches to the United Nations where he called President George W. Bush “the devil.” He also accused him of “fighting terror with terror” following the war in Afghanistan.

markingday:

This is almost completely wrong. As a computer scientist, I can assure you that 99.99999% of inventions in computers were by white Americas and Europeans. Fact. We need to stop hanging on to glory of thousands of years ago, that cannot be proven. What have we contributed to the modern world?

Boy, you cannot contribute to the modern world because we do not have a home. We have been dehumanised by the West since 500 years ago. Knowing that the modern inventions all started less than 200 years ago; how can dehumanised people invent?

Go read about the European discoveries and how they destroyed Africa; read about slavery, colonization; Flag Independence and neo-colonialism. Until we defeat these things and have a working society; we cannot invent.

God did not create us inferior to the Whites; what is happening today is an accident of history. Egypt as recorded in the bible at a time when the whites were living in caves was a black country; forget that the Arab came and chased us downwards.

Our fathers civilised before the stealing whites. It was gun and shipping that made the White lord over us. They over powered with their guns, destroyed our cities; took us into slavery and stopped our civilization.

When we gain our freedom; we will start to evolve again and will surely catch up with them.

My dear hugo. It is with deep grief that I write this. You were a man of guts and glory. U didn't flinch in the face of your adversaries, u always stood by time proven people oriented principles and your people are better for it. You were privy to the western capitalist agenda and refuted it without fear.
You were truly a leader servant.
I long to be emulate you as I live in all spheres of life.
I wish your guts and glory be transmuted onto me.

Rest as you keep vigil on your people.
