In Scotland,its free. Apart from the Ivy league institutions,their education system is underwhelming.American pupils have some of the worst literacy and numeracy skills in the OECD.

Let me start. The UK actually "knows" a lot of the outside world since they travel a lot too. We know and interact with our "neighbours" both friendly and otherwise. Dont forget we are part of the EU, Commonwealth and other world bodies.

Japan is not building cruise missiles but its technologically more advanced than the US.How do you determine who is technologically more advanced? If its patents per capita,many countries,including the UK,are far ahead of the US.

It depends on what type of technology you are talking about. How can a country that co-developed the Concorde, not have the necessary technological prowess. What is working in favour of the US is the large population. Like you mentioned, the UK is an Island, a small one at that. I doubt Bill Gates would have been as successful if he was based in the UK, same as the reason a lot of artists want to crack the US, that is where the population is.
