Ah..boarding school was fun! Especially when you become a senior.
I remember when we got the SS1, the SS3 students gave us welcome punishment..it was a normal thing in all the hostels in the senior side hostels. Punishment of all types..and painful too., Goodness! We'd be weeping like Jss1 student. Punishment like kneel down and fly ur arms, hanging, pick pin,..beating nko?! Oh gosh! Our main instrument for beating were t-square, hanger, abara or any stick around sha,
It was a pity i was ill when it was our turn in SS3 to do it for the new ss1 students.

During afternoon and night prep, we'll all stand up and greet the prefect dat'll be supervising us..if not., we don enter our own..na punishment for dat night oh..

During 'starvation' period, oh lord, keep ur provision and money safe,.cos once ur turn ur head small, the thing don disappear oh!

I remember the meagre meals we were given until the new principal in my final year increased our ration and introduced new meals. Imagine one slice of plantain on plenty beans!
One good thing was dat we had a food time table and our meals were always on time..as in really on time., and the timetable was followed religiously..so we always knew what we were to eat next.

I remember socials clubs day, when other schools were invited, it just for fun, dancing and socialising. Been an only girls school, you'd see girls wearing their most fitted skirt, perming their hair, or packing it the most stylish way just to impress the boys that'll be coming, especially fgc odogbolu boys, kings college boys and navy boys. I remember how we use to front for queens college girls. Gosh! Madness.

I remember when i was caught with some girls cooking in the hostel..lord of mercy. I tot i was going to be expelled!and i use to be cool in school o..the woman just told us to cut the grass in her part of the staff quarters in the school. Normally dats an offence dat deserves expulsion or deboarding.

There are so many!
Meanwhile i attended Federal Government Girls College Sagamu and i spent my six years there..and i'm proud!

Re: Nigerian Boarding School Experiences by Nobody: 3:37pm On Mar 20, 2013
I used to think my school was hard but after hearing tales from my cousins about their own school, I knew I was an ajebo. I went to a missionary school while they went to a military school.

Anyway, we had to get up at 5 in the morning but as a junior student, I got up at 4 so that I could take my shower (before the bathroom got filled up) and leave the hostel as soon as the door opened, which was usually at 6. We did all sorts of punishments, clearing the school field with a blunt machete, frog jumping, okada riding (the one where you sit on the air), angle 90 (hanging on the door), pick pin etc etc.

SS1 students were responsible for cleaning the toilets and bathrooms. One evening, the toilets were messed up real bad. I mean, we ate beans and garri that evening, so I couldn't blame anyone. The house captain locked us all in the toilets. 5 persons in one toilet. Argh!! I couldn't breathe. That was when I started praying to become a prefect cos prefects didn't have to do any job.

I became a prefect in SS1 second term ...my time had come grin grin grin...no more cleaning of toilets.

I entered SS2 and that was when the real me came out, duh!! I no send anyone then, you do anyhow, you see anyhow. I became a prefect again in SS2 second term. Omo mehn, I made sure I shone as bright as a star.

If I start with my stories today, this thread no go contain me.

Re: Nigerian Boarding School Experiences by hardbody: 3:43pm On Mar 20, 2013
Boarding school was fun for me and i opted to go to the boarding house in my 5th year just because i wanted to have the experience and perhaps the freedom. I did not eat from the school cafetaria(or whatever they called it back then)because my uncle and grandma lived very close to the school (my dad and family were in some other town )and i was always going to 'steal' grandma's money. ( i think she had glaucoma then)and i will come back to school to buy all those sweet mama put. I even used to give food to other students. I usually cleaned out my beverages in 3 to 5 days and replenished as soon as i went back into town to steal more from grandma.I will sleep and wake up when others have gone for morning assembly and i will stroll to the stream, have my bath and walk back to the dorm. I hardly attended classes. Towards the end of my final exams, i cleaned out my uncle's money that he was keeping in the ceiling, finished my exams and left.

I used to party hard, drink and smoke. The Boarding house allowed me that leverage. Further, although there were rules about day dress and all, i was simply a renegade and was not playing by any school rules, even the senior prefect then was more or less scared of me although i was much smaller, but i had the power of cash and could arrange for him to be beaten up by boys from the town anyday.

The result of that wayward life was that i failed my final exams woefully.

This was at Aggrey Memorial College.

It was only when i rejoined my parents that i became serious and made up for my papers. Since then i haven't looked back.

Boarding school is like one step away from hell. I can't narrate my experience because it is huge and i spent 6yrs of my life in boarding school, but it makes me smart though.
Re: Nigerian Boarding School Experiences by Nobody: 3:54pm On Mar 20, 2013
When I was in JSS1, the SS3 seniors made me draw a Cadillac on the board and told me to drive in from one end of the board to the other. In my head, I was like "Na God go punish una, how you want make I do am?. I became a laughing stock in their class that day...the humiliation, damn!!! cry cry cry

There was also the book "My journey shall never end" that the seniors always told the new JSS1 students to go get from their friends. So you had to go from Senior A to Senior B to ask for Senior A's book titled "my journey shall never end". Senior B then directs you to Senior C who directs you to Senior D and so on....so literally, your journey never ends.

I was in the hostel during my university days(1989 - 2005). First I was very fortunate in 100L to 300L because as a junior I had no control over the activities of our room (3 students in a room). God so arranged it that from the beginning of each semester, all my room mates will verbally agree to what is known as codes of conduct. This was fairly observed. Whenever any member tries to deviate, he will be cautioned. This culture continued each session even though room mates changed. W In my 400L - 500L, when my voice was now strong as a senior, I just continued the good culture I had inherited from my christian predecessors. But the bathroom and toilets were eye - sore. Most at times we wait till the cleaners finish washing the toilets in the morning, then we rush in to defecate.

Having to stand and watch some scum.bag insult me (your father!) in hausa angry angry
Having too many school sons and daughters, some of which i inherited from my school mother and father (few of the girls later became my girlfriend) kiss kiss
Sneaking out with my "mofty" (baggy jeans and over-sized T-shirt) with my favourite school daughter to club (may God forgive me!) embarassed embarassed
Drinking water from the ground by sieving it with stones

Getting punished for writing my name on the ceiling (bad guys thing) grin grin
I'll stop here
....did u attend a unity school?
Re: Nigerian Boarding School Experiences by slimyem: 4:36pm On Mar 20, 2013
I wasn't allowed to attend boarding school but thr boarders in my school had it tough!!
You dare not stare at a senior while she's dressing up else you'll be asked to draw what you see.grin
Clothes can be washed you on head while you are on you knees if you offend a senior..
You get to pay them back if they ask you to fetch water by peeing in it.grin
The food was so uncool that boarders who could not eat it would send day students out to buy food and the day students would have to throw the vended food over the fence beside the toilet while the boarders go pick it upundecided
The ones that ate the food had a spice bowl made up of salt, maggi, pepper, curry and thyme which they took to the ref and sprinkled into the food everytime.
During birthdays, they make what was called garri-cake.a combination of gaari with sugar, milk and tea baked with little water and made to solidify in a bowl.cheesy
Lebianism was the order of the day too.The code name for it in my school was "egege"
Boarding house in my school was original sufferhead.undecided

Anyone who actually attended a 'boarding' school can't really write 'all' his/her experiences here.. Dem just too plenty. The highest i do now is, whenever i remember any of those experiences, i just smile, coz then it looked like the world ends there! But now, mehn, one sees that life nor easy o.
I remember what we call 'spiderman'...lol, that is, climbing over walls, thru ceilings for different purposes. Sometimes, its light out, &u need to get to ur hostel but u have been shut out. Or is it spider to take provisions from school kitchen? Lol..
Then, digging of pits, pits as deep as the tallest guy in ur class &as wide as when he outstretch his hands.
Abi na senior/junior matter?
'Blocking' (that's to lay ambush for late comers?
Is it Labour?
School farm? Water wahala? Rushing of food? Convering table knifes to spoons?
Spiritual aspects too... Mehn, experiences too much.. Don't even knw where to start.
Senior go just come ur table top, sieve all the fish & meat inside, leave ordinary stew for una.
If u dey sleep for night class, ur own classmates go
Just off light, & na so dem go descend on u. When u open eye, u nor go see road sef.
Dem go tif ur blanket as u dey sleep, dey shine bright torch light inside ur eye, u go say make u open eye to see the tif, for where? U wan see through light? Lol
If dem wan flog u, u go provide valentino belt for the senior.... Yet, we play like we the happiest on earth
Boarding house dey sweet sha.. Has its ups & downs.. Later una go meet for uni & future life. Some of ur 'seniors' then go dey lower levels for school than u, some go dey ahead of u. Some una go jam for awkward places. U go see ur junior say him na sharp big boy. Life go move on.

SHS was a good place to be as at then. In junior class we were beaten every sat and sun by SS3 men.
Fighting was fun cos we will take the two fighters to the school farm and entertain ourselves with WWE.
If ur sch is uniform stolen, u look for the nearest one and continue.
In th refectory, we usually had little time to eat breakfast, so we will have to be eating on the run if not u will go hungry or will be mercilessly beaten up.
In JSS2 someone defecated in a locker, we were made to sniff the feaces and we were threatened that we will use spoon to collect a little portion each next time it re occurs.
We had to drink water from bathing buckets and u dare not bring out sip (aka garri flakes) when guys are hungry, otherwise u may not even partake.
We stole eggs from d sch poultry an cooked some chickens in iron bucket.
The we will go to the sch poultry an connect naked wire to the battery cage just to see how the birds will react when electrocuted.

Mehn!!!! Boarding school was the bomb.

As a junior, you suffered oooo.. Lemme recall the craze tinz JS1-3 go through:
Dirty plate call – this is a call by a senior student (SS2 - 3) at which he would throw up his plate (plastic oo) but if it lands on the floor!!! All the Juniors are dead – seriously cry
Dirty clothes call – same scenario as above cry
Mid –term and New- term tax – I schooled in the beginning of the 90’s, so you pay roughly 30 – 50 bucks to the Generals (the sadists seniors) and 20 naira to the gentler ones. The tax is less if you’ve a sadist senior as your school father cos he takes half your pocket money and that’s all!!! undecided
Fight club – this is for entertainment of the seniors and not all juniors undergo this. If you’ve been identified as a bad boy (sneak out of school, partake in eating housemasters goats and chickens, raid the school farm), then you are eligible to be called to fight at any time T (fight takes place mostly during school hours – class dodgers) cool
Burgled lockers – after the 1st night, bye bye to your provisions and text books embarassed
Maintain your seniors farm plot – each house (hostel group) had their own farm plot and proceeds are given to the school (in other words the principal and senior teachers to share) angry

As a senior, I was a made-manboi… lemme lists some tinz we did:
Kitchen raid – the cooks always start preparation of the morning meal on slow fire overnight, perfect opportunity to raid the big pot cool
Kill, Cook and eat Goat/chicken/snake/bush rat/wood worm - anything that looks edible cool
Cook with boiling rings connected to light switch/with coal iron and (most ingenious) a hole in the ground (to be explained later) cool
Raid the school farm cool
Sneak out of school every night to a joint to eat fufu. Funny that I wouldn’t try that shit again if given the chance. The buka opens only by 6pm and it’s just across the road from a cemetery (I’ve eaten enough ghost meals, chai) lipsrsealed
Sneak out every weekend to local hotels to swim/shag your school mate/play games at your day-student friend's house cool
One that is general, right from Junior to Senior class is Ninjarising – using a tee-shirt to cover ur face, two pillows to soften your footfall and going into the female hostels in the middle of the night to get trophies (trophies – female pubic hair) and check out the ones bathing at night…. (Please, note that I only did this once or twice to spite some girls that abused me) lipsrsealed
