bodeplot: @ALL... please i nid ur advice, univ of nebraska lincoln gave my frnd admission for PhD into Fall 2013, but with no funding, however, they said the univ doesnt have funding for graduate students dis 2013/14 session and he can accept or defer for 2yrs..pls, what do suggest he shud do e.g forget it,defer or go, and is there any possibilities that they will give funding the next session. thanks in advance

One advice I have for your friend is that he should look before he leaps. If there is no guarantee of funding now or in the future, he should please count the cost well before making a decision because it isn't a nice thing to fall out of status and besides, it could be very difficult and frustrating when one is broke here.

webstradamus:

Tell your friend to defer while looking out for other programs that have funding for Spring 2014 (I believe most PhD admissions for Fall 2013 must have been concluded by now). You may call me Baba Ijebu or what not but I strongly believe there is no point paying for a PhD here even if you can afford it grin grin grin There's just too much research money out there waiting to be spent!

I agree that there is no point paying for a PhD however, it seems they are cutting down on the grants available to school and therefore, it is advisable to apply to a number of schools so that one can always have an option to fall back on.

Hey, find out if they have a student's bus/train pass or discount card. In some cities in TX, students get a free ride with student ID. $4 ride on a student's income is expensive.

$4 is too expensive for a student to be spending everyday on transportation, find better options.

Hello Nlers
I need help, advice, comments whatever the case maybe to help me make a decision.
Have worked for 3years as a Project manager, i want to enroll for mba programme in hawaii pacific university. My parents do not want me to travel for masters coz they fell i wouldnt come back ontime ( which by d way is true). so am tricking them into paying tuition.
My questions are.
Does anyone have an idea how freindly hawaii pacific is in terms of living cost and enviroment?
is hawaii pacific good school as i intend to get a job in us after masters.
Are there work opportunity as a student in hawaii while studying.
Hawaii will recieve any score below 450 for gmat, will that be a factor for visa granting? ( wouldnt the vo think gmat score is too low)
IS THERE ANYONE ON NAIRALAND LEAVING IN HAWAII OR HAS A CONTACT IN HAWAAII THAT CAN GIVE A PRECISE INFORMATION.
All comments are welcome. thanks.

I will appreciate

You should be aware that though Hawaii is a state in the USA, it is not part of the continental United States. It is like a small country on its own with her language, customs, traditions, and so on. That said, the state offers a lot of opportunities like others and students can really have lots of wonderful and enjoyable times there.

@stuhporh, cost of living in Hawaii is quite high compared to most major US cities. It's a chain of islands disconnected from the rest of the US. Little wonder many online merchants often exclude Hawaii from delivery. Just curious, what made you choose Hawaii? You might still find those things in the contiguous US.

But why would the VO demand for a GRE score when some schools do not demand it from some Masters students.Eg Bowie University.

Because VO wants to know how enthusiastic you are about studying.... criterion for selection.

GRE or other similar exam is probably one of the ways that a wary VO can use to determine potential students from those that are not.

Please NL, There is a school I'm looking into for admission but SAT and TOEFL is not compulsory...( TOEFL is required for NON- ENGLISH speaking countries) Is it really a good choice for me especially with no WAEC original result??

And the embassy's decision supersedes the schools decision... Admission letter without a Visa is useless, so take the exams.

I didnt get the Bicycle to ride to school o...I got it to exercise my body and for a quick ride to the store to get some stuff real fast when needed instead of walking. And yes there is a Discount card, $50 monthly.(the $50 sef cost sad ) I didn't want to get it when i entered Boston because it was almost end of the month and it expires at the end of every month irrespective of what day of the month it was purchased. angry I am planning to get one on my way to school tomorrow for orientation.

Read Bolded. So its not by your school's requirements but by the VO's....but in terms of the waec thingy...you should talk to your school about it and see what they say

What I mean by "I left" is their admission not that I used their admission for visa application. Immediately I got the second admission offer, I wrote them that I'm dropping their offer.

Chusino: please can someone help me out i want to apply for my masters in Howard university in USA and i don't know where to start from.

Go the school's website and navigate through your intending department, graduate and international student web pages respectively. That way, you can get as much information as you need and should you need further clarification, do not hesitate to write to the respective office for more information. That eases off the stress that comes along with application as you do not need to depend on people on the forum for what is and what not.
