Clintons report $109.2M for 7 years

WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Clinton reported $20.4 million in income for 2007 and more than $109 million since 2000 as they gave the public the most detailed look at their finances in eight years.

The campaign released tax returns from 2000 through 2006 and gave highlights from their 2007 return. The Clintons have asked for an extension for filing their 2007 tax returns, citing the dissolution of a blind trust last year.

The Democratic presidential candidate and her husband paid $33.8 million in taxes from 2000 through 2007. They listed $10.25 million in charitable contributions during that period.

Clinton has been under pressure to release her tax returns, especially from rival Sen. Barack Obama, who posted his 2000 to 2006 returns on his campaign Web site last week. Neither Obama nor Republican Sen. John McCain have made their 2007 tax returns public, though both say they will this month.

The Clintons last made their returns public in 2000 when they reported an adjusted gross income of $416,039. Since then, the former president has embarked on a number of business ventures and has made millions from speaking engagements.

According to a summary of the seven years provided by the campaign, the former president's speech income since he left the White House totals $51.85 million and his income from his two books — "My Life " and "Giving" — totals $29.6 million.

Hillary Clinton had $10.5 million in book income over the period from her book "Living History." She donated earnings from her other book, "It Takes a Village," to charity.

Clinton's tax returns show that of the remaining presidential candidates, she is the one most able to access large amounts of personal money. She lent her campaign $5 million in late February and could contribute more if she finds herself falling far behind Obama's proficient fundraising.

McCain's wife is heiress to her father's stake in Hensley & Co. of Phoenix, one of the largest beer distributorships in the country and her worth could exceed $100 million. But the couple has a prenuptial agreement that has kept most assets in her name. In his financial disclosures, McCain lists his major sources of income as his Senate salary of $169,300 and a Navy pension of about $56,000.

In 2006, Obama reported income of nearly $1 million, with nearly half of it coming from the publication of his second book, "The Audacity of Hope." Last week, the campaign disclosed that Obama and his wife, Michelle, gave $240,000 to charity last year.

Clinton on Dubai Payroll

Former President Bill Clinton is up to his eyeballs in dealings with Dubai, his former top political adviser has revealed.

According to Dick Morris, author of the best-selling book, "Condi vs, Hillary," Clinton is a paid agent of the crown prince of Dubai, now involved in a firestorm over its deal to take over some of the operations at six major U.S. ports.

"Bill Clinton is a senior adviser - a paid adviser - to a company called Yucaipa which recently set up a relationship with a group called the Yucaipa Investment group to set up a new company called DIGL," Morris said on "The O'Reilly Factor."

"DIGL Inc. is in charge of managing the investments of the crown prince of Dubai throughout the world. Bill Clinton is paid by Yucaipa a percentage of the profits it makes, and Yucaipa said its profits have exceeded 40 percent in recent years.

"He is a paid agent of the crown prince of Dubai. That in addition to the roughly million dollars they gave his library, in addition to the probably $600,000 in speaking fees he got, and in addition to the scholarships for Dubai children they endowed through his library.

"I have three points about that. First, when Bill Clinton tells us this port deal is kosher, he ought to disclose that he's being paid by the government. Secondly, he should register as an agent of a foreign principal because he's giving public relations advice to a foreign company. And thirdly, his wife should disclose how much Clinton is being paid and when he's been paid, because it goes into a joint bank account and this is in effect a payment to the husband of a senator.

"And then I would raise another question: Didn't Hillary jump out of the box opposing this port deal because she knew of her husband's vulnerability and wanted to get out ahead of the story? I was talking to a source of mine who's very close to the Clintons about seven or eight months ago and the source said that he's all the time going back and forth to Dubai and getting deeper and deeper into that relationship. She (Hillary) was worried about that and its political impact," Morris said.

Morris also had harsh words for President Bush, whom he charged "messed up the Dubai port deal.

"He let the opposition discover it. (Sen.) Chuck Schumner broke the story and Bush didn't frame it the way he needed to," Morris said, explaining that he thinks the president simply doesn't care anymore.

"I'm getting the impression that he's basically telling (adviser Karl) Rove and the folks, 'Look, I got re-elected, there's not more that I can do to control this. If you want me to go out here for three or four days I will, but I'm not doing it every day, I'm not pounding the pavement like I did for re-election, and I'm taking the long view.'"

Morris, one of the nation's top political gurus said that Bush needs to do what Clinton did all through his second term - and even every single day - maintain control of public opinion.

Morris warned that a president who drops below 50 percent approval rating for a sustained period of time is in deep trouble. "It's like a no-confidence vote in a parliamentary system - you might as well be out of office."

Bush, he said, "has now dropped to a point where Republicans are turning on him, the public is turning on him and all he's got is a portion of the Republican base. And it is going to get worse - he's going to get (crushed) in the election of '06, he'll probably have at least one if not two houses (of Congress) controlled by Democrats launching investigations, etc. This is not a pretty picture. He has lost control over public opinion and he has only his own laziness to blame."

Morris said that "if the president doesn't understand that if a president loses control of public opinion he loses control of the job." He likened losing control to having your immune system suppressed - you're susceptible to opportunistic infections, like your vice president shoots somebody while hunting, or the Dubai ports thing. That's all a function of decreased popularity."

The Clinton's Hypocrisy on Dubai

Hillary Clinton and her campaign repeatedly highlight her ardent feminism, her lifelong advocacy of workers’ rights, her consistent support for unions, and her love of Israel.

But those principles go right out the window if there’s money involved. When it comes to lining their pockets, the Clintons have a double standard. While Hillary chastises American corporations and employers for lay-offs and opposition to greater union organizing rights, Bill is paid big bucks that go into their joint bank accounts to legitimize the anti-Semitic, anti-worker, anti-union, and anti-woman Arab state of the UAE and its emirates of Dubai.

It’s not just Bill’s $1.2 million Dubai speaking fees that have enriched the Clintons, and its not just the million dollar contribution by the Emir of Dubai to the Clinton Presidential Library that has endeared the Islamic monarchy to them.

It’s much more that that: Bill Clinton was personally responsible for delivering the ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the U.A.E., Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to a partnership with Yucaipa Cos., headed by Bill and Hillary’s uber-fundraiser Ron Burkle.

The Clinton's Hypocrisy on DubaiHillary Placed SecondHillary's Star Appeal FadingThe Political A Team FaltersHillary's Mistakes Fuel Obama's SurgeFull-page Dick Morris & Eileen McGann Archive
Bill Clinton is a paid adviser and member of the Board of Directors of Yucaipa. Together, the Sheik and Yucaipa have formed a new company, Dubai Investment Group Limited, to jointly invest Yucaipa funds and the Sheik's personal funds.

So Bill Clinton is now an adviser and member of the board of directors of a company that is in partnership with the government of Dubai — a part of the world that blatantly discriminates against women, abuses workers in violation of international law, outlaws unions, deports strikers, and bans Israelis and their products from ever entering the country.

The Clintons won't reveal how much the former president pocketed for setting up this deal, except to report on Hillary's Senate disclosure form: "more than $1,000."

It’s a lot more. According to San Francisco Examiner columnist P.J. Corkery, Clinton makes $10 million a year from Yucaipa.

At the same time, the average worker in the Dubai and the UAE construction industry makes about $177 per month, not enough to support a family. According to the U.S. State Department, 98 percent of the workforce in the UAE is made up of foreigners, who Human Rights Watch are for “indentured servants, with no right to form unions or hold strikes.” About 20 percent of them work in the Dubai construction industry. Most of these workers are illiterate and have paid huge fees (usually with loans) to get the job. It is a routine practice for employers to withhold paychecks for several months and to hold the workers passports as “security.”

• There is no minimum wage.

• There is no right to organize for collective bargaining for foreign workers or domestic workers.

• There is no right to strike. Those who dare are either deported or banned from working for a year.

• There is no right to freely move from job to job unless either the current employer agrees to provide a letter of “no objection,” or the worker leaves the country for six months.

• Worker safety is not an important matter and there are only 80 inspectors to monitor over 250,000 employers.

• Workers are out in 104 degree temperatures in the summer with only a two and a half hour break in the middle of the day — a break that used to be four and a half hours, but was recently shortened.

• The workday is 8 hours, but employers frequently require overtime — without extra pay. There is a six-day work week.

Many of the lowest skilled workers live in horrible conditions. The U.S. State Department report on human rights in the UAE notes that:

“Low-skilled employees were often provided with substandard living conditions, including overcrowded apartments or lodging in unsafe and unhygienic "labor camps," often lacking electricity, potable water, and adequate cooking and bathing facilities. Some low-paid workers did not receive these benefits, even if stipulated in their contracts.”

For the full report, Click here.

But while Bill collects the checks for the Clinton family from anti-worker Dubai, Hillary lectures about workers’ rights.

Just last week, Hillary spoke at the convention of the Communications Workers of America and urged its members to contact Republican Senators about pro-union legislation:

“Let them know this is a voting issue; this goes to the real heart of whether we're going to be a country that stands on a principle that every person should have the right to join a union, to be part of a bargaining unit that will stand up for your income , ”

Hillary doesn’t have the same interest in the workers whose employers enrich the Clintons — she apparently has no objection to collecting the Dubai dollars or to Dubai’s disgraceful treatment of workers.

Our own government has recognized the severity of the abuses: “Since 1995 the country has been suspended from the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) insurance programs because of the government's noncompliance with internationally recognized worker rights standards.”

Hey, Hillary, stop the hypocrisy.

Bill Clinton Earned $15.4 Million From Burkle Firm

April 5 (Bloomberg) -- Former President Bill Clinton has earned $15.4 million from billionaire Ron Burkle's Yucaipa Cos. investment firm since 2003, according to tax documents released by his wife, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

The earnings represent 20 percent of the approximately $75 million Bill Clinton earned during the same period, according to the documents. That may raise new questions about what services he performed for Los Angeles-based Yucaipa, whose investors include the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid al- Maktoum.

Tax lawyers said the Yucaipa partnership income for Bill Clinton looks to be a form of salary because it was in round numbers for most years.

``Most people who make that much money work for it,'' said Yale University tax law professor Michael Graetz, a former Treasury Department official in President George H.W. Bush's administration. ``What are they being paid for, and if it's the Sheikh of Dubai paying the husband of somebody who might be the next president of the United States, what do they think they're paying for?''

Jay Carson, a spokesman for New York Senator Clinton, said in an e-mailed statement that former President Clinton is a partner in a Yucaipa fund and ``provides his best advice on potential investments, advocates generally on behalf of the funds, and seeks to create opportunities for investors to consider investing in the fund.''

Carson didn't respond to a question about whether Bill Clinton did any work for Dubai. In 2006 Senator Clinton opposed efforts by a Dubai-based company to acquire control over six U.S. ports.

Tax Returns

The payments from Yucaipa to Bill Clinton were detailed in seven years of tax returns released by Hillary Clinton, 60, following pressure to disclose them from rival Barack Obama, the Illinois senator who made public his own returns in March.

The returns covered tax years 2000 through 2006. Hillary Clinton's campaign also released information about the couple's 2007 income, although they haven't yet filed a return for that year. Obama has yet to release information on his 2007 income.

The former president, 61, received $1 million from Yucaipa in 2003, $4 million in 2004 and $5 million in 2005. In 2006, he received a guaranteed payment of $2.5 million plus a $156,611 share of the profits. The campaign said he earned $2.75 million from partnership income in 2007.

Amounts `Odd'

``The flat amounts received from Yucaipa are odd,'' said Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president of taxation at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, who agreed that it signaled Bill Clinton was performing a service. ``That's quite unusual.''

Previously, Hillary Clinton reported only that the former president earned ``more than $1,000'' a year from Yucaipa on financial disclosure forms she is required to file in the Senate.

In all, the Clintons earned $109 million from 2000 through 2007 and paid $33.8 million in federal taxes, the returns and campaign documents show. They donated $10.3 million of their income over that time to charities.

The bulk of those charitable donations went to the family foundation. From 2002 through 2006, $5.9 million of the $6.4 million, or 93 percent, of the Clinton's charitable giving went directly to the William J. Clinton Foundation, according to the tax returns and the foundation's 990 forms. The 990s for 2000 and 2001 were not immediately available and it has not yet filed for 2007.

Cayman Islands Funds

The tax returns indicate the couple paid all the U.S. federal taxes owed on the income from Yucaipa, which controls three funds located in the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands doesn't charge any individual or corporate income tax and has strict bank secrecy laws.

Bill Clinton's ties to Yucaipa have sparked controversy over the past year, including a September report in the Wall Street Journal that detailed how one of the former president's aides had helped arrange a partnership with Burkle that dissolved amid litigation over allegations of misused funds.

Yucaipa spokesman Frank Quintero didn't return calls seeking comment about what services Bill Clinton performed for the company. Forbes Magazine listed Burkle, 55, as the 91st richest American last year, with a net worth of $3.5 billion.

Carson said in December that the former president ``is taking steps to ensure'' that ``there will be an appropriate transition from those relationships'' if his wife receives the Democratic presidential nomination.

Rising Income

The 210 pages of documents released yesterday chronicle the Clintons' rising income since 1999, the last year for which they had previously released a tax return. The couple earned $20.4 million last year, compared with less than $420,000 in 1999, the year before they left the White House.

The bulk of their income, $51.9 million, came from Bill Clinton's speeches, the campaign said in a summary. The former president also earned $1.2 million from his presidential pension and $29.6 million from royalties and an advance for his autobiography.

Hillary Clinton earned $10.5 million in book royalties and advances and a total of $1.1 million from her Senate salaries since 2001. In 1999, the Clintons earned $417,467, had $334,681 in taxable income after deductions including $39,200 to charity, and paid $92,104 in federal taxes.

At a Democratic Party convention in Grand Forks, North Dakota, last night, Hillary Clinton said that her husband ``has made a lot of money since he left the White House doing what he loves most, talking to people

Right on point!

Once again, everything the Clintons do is strategic and full of tricks for the fools.
It took them forever to reveal their tax returns info; and it is amusing to me that they released this info only because they know that it is no longer matter (Hillary will not and can not win the primary election).

It is also incredible that she is no longer targeting Obama any more, it's now all about attacking the republican. I guess, they've realized that the end of the road is near and it is now time to restore the old magnificent name "the Clintons" the poor people's president.

The Clintons understand the rules and they know how to milk the system to the max.
Yes, the 109 Million dollars may be legally made by the Clintons, but the message these folks were sending to America was absolutely opposite to their bank account; and they know this fact too. This is the main reason why it took them many months to release the figures.

Trust me, the party is over and I predict that very soon the Clintons will start dancing and pulling for Obama, just to regain the lost love of Black folks in America.

What a bunch of dishonest shady lowlife!

What is Hillary or Obama's experience in economics? McCain's faux pax was that he offered a rare moment of candor which is unheard of for most politicians.

You have a situation were, with the US facing a recession,Obama and Hillary are promising to raise both taxes and trade barriers-hardly the solutions to revive the economy. These were the same policy measures adopted during the Hoover era.

If you comb through statements made by any politician, you will find glaring factual errors.McCain is no exception. For instance,Obama told a story of a captain commanding a rifle platoon. What was remarkable about it is that its common knowledge Captains don't command platoons.

Foreign policy is hardly an issue one can claim McCain knows little of.What is important is the platform of policies on which both candidates are running and McCain's platform seems to be more well though out.

How can the clintons be cheats just cause they earned 109 Mllion?? Obama lives in a million dollar house himself and the guy is making millions as well. He is not poor either, yet he is fighting for the poor. McCain is not poor either. he is married to a woman worth millions of dollars as well and he has yet to release his own tax information. We are still in tax season and I do not see any reason why anyone should be penalized for waiting to the last couple of days to release their tax information. Could it not be that they just wanted to make sure that they settled all their accounts with the IRS before releasing it??

May be this is the right moment to declare that Hillary Clinton is not just anyone; she is the wife of the former president of United States, and she is also a presidential candidate.
Folks like this usually do whatever it takes to release any information that may create any unnecessary obstacles or controversies.
If there isn't any shady businesses, it isn't a big deal for a presidential candidate to immediately release his or her tax returns.
FYI:These folks have the best of the best accountants working for them 24/7; hence, it is very much possible to get this information out on time if they want it out

"Wanting to make sure that they settle all their accounts with IRS before releasing it" is nothing, but a despicable and simple excuse.

Come on, you and I know pretty well that not every rich man/woman is cut from the same cloth. If I would, I actually think the Clintons may be the cheap rich kind. In America, to run for president, one has to be rich and so expecting them to be poor to mingle or understand what poor people deal with is not being realistic. When you speak of transparency, note that they NEVER said the information will not be released. Infact, you and I know that such information can not be hidden in any way as this is still the united states of america we are speaking of. Someone is bound to get his/her hands on it and release it through utube or tmz.

Concerning her husband's hand in dubai businesses that Hillary may be against, I can not help but notice that we have a hard time accepting the idea that Hillary may not necessarily agree with her husband on every issue. She is running on a platform that opposes some of the policies her husband was for back when he was in office. I think if she can move to making people understand that she does not agree with him on every ground even though she is married to him and get's his support, that could actually help her a bit.

It is a presidential election. I expect them to say or do anything they have to, to get the position. I just hope all people understand that and so do not get carried away by the numbers and the lights and all.

john McCain is more honest. he said the truth that he does not know much about how economy works. that is Honesty. when the republicans were busy hitting hard at immigration during the primaries, McCain reminded them that those so called illegal immigrants are God's children too. Love. He told black people that he voted against MLK's holiday in 1983 and asked for forgiveness(also telling them he supported the holiday in Arizona later) Humility

@toshmann:

My man, I was with you until you started giving all these unnecessary kudos to McCain. FYI: McCain is an extention of Bush.

It is extremely scary when a presidential candidate publicly admits that "he does not know much about how economy works". As a presidential candidate, admitting to such thing represents absolute illogicality; No disrespect, but I guess, it is true that 70s is the age when ridiculousness kicks in.
The best he (McCain) could do is learn how it works, just don't come here telling Americans that you do not know how to do your job, and still claiming that you're the best candidate for the position.
This is absolutely crazy!

@toshmann:
How would you feel if a pilot tells you that he doesn't know much about how the airplane cockpit control works; will you still be willing to fly on his plane?
Come on now!

I honestly think the man (McCain) should go home in peace and spend more quality time with his great grand children.

There is nothing wrong being rich and also fight for the poor. What count is how you become rich. Did the Clinton steal from the public purse? No! Did they award their companies govt contracts? No!!, Did they use their friends as proxy to award contracts? No!

What seems to be the problem especially the Americanised Nigerian-BigB1? The Clintons can make billions if care but they made the money through the effetiive use of their talents, privilege and legitimate means and paid taxes for it, unlike your leaders back home that packs 911 lorries at central bank and load the dollars to Switzerland.
Obama himself is not poor either and like the Clintons will even be richer in future when he decide to write his memo to the highest bidding publishers.

John Mcain for years had alway bask on the hero bridge to cross every water because he was captured in a war an tortured. Loads of tuff, since when has been captured in a war make you a hero? I can't remember the likes of Alexander the great being capture in a war and came back as heros. He is too old and clueless, his economic plans are a bit like micky mouse piggy bank.
Well, my little opinion!!!!!!!!

My man, that was absolutely unnecessary.
You could have made your point clear without stepping on people's toes. You need to be very careful; abusiveness will not be allowed.

I agree with you completely that the clintons have a right to be rich and make as much as they can legally. That would not stop them from being good leaders. Some of the people we have doing a lot of good in communities around the country are rich people, even some billionaires as well.

However, I do disagree with you on the McCain comments you made up there. If you really look at it closely, McCain's economic strategy happens to be better than those of his opponents. I understand that it has almost become general thinking in America that we are in the situation we are in today in America cause of Government but the truth is it is average americans like you and I who went out and stupidly, in many cases signed up for loans they could not afford. I still can not believe how any person making about $19,000 a year would justify getting a loan to buy a $200,000 house, even worse, a person making $19,000 with two children as dependents, convincing self that buying a $200,000 house is a good idea. Having government come in to bail us out of our mistakes is all good and well in theory but that goes against the Capitalist model we have enjoyed from the beginning, don't you think?? Take the credit crunch aka Housing bubble, the government did not actually create it, we, the people did. Expecting government to bail us out and make things all better will be moving us towards a socialist model which is not what majority of us would want. The money to be used for this bailout will come from another sector and we will have to deal with the hole we create in that area in the near future as well.

I believe you and I would like to be free to amass wealth as much as we want so why do we want the government to come in to bail us out and tell us how to spend out money now?? The Clintons are enjoying that freedom today; Freedom to make money as much as they can, Freedom to go out and qualify for loan without the government tying or restricting them in many ways (I know a lot of people who will cry discrimination and even inject RACE into it, in a heart beat, if that ever hand).

I understand people get all angry when we hear of CEO's giving themselves pay raises and bonuses when workers are suffering and I do agree it is evil but imagine if Government decides to swoop in and tie the hands of companies to the point that when you get your own mega corporation, you find that those limitations actually end up working against you and goals you may have( which may be good).

From the much I have gleaned of the McCain economic plan, it is time we let the system current itself and do better in regulating institutions as minimally as we can so that people continue to enjoy the many benefits they do today while we pray that people will learn to make better decisions in the future from whatever it is they learn from this, as that is all you can really do.

Yes, it is true that $10 million out of the Clintons $109 million went to their charities; now the question is: who are the folks making donations to these charities?
I will appreciate an answer.

Hillary Clinton's List of Lies

Admitted Lies:

• Chelsea was jogging around the Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. (She was in bed watching it on TV.)
• Hillary was named after Sir Edmund Hillary. (She admitted she was wrong. He climbed Mt. Everest five years after her birth.)
• She was under sniper fire in Bosnia. (A girl presented her with flowers at the foot of the ramp.)
• She learned in The Wall Street Journal how to make a killing in the futures market. (It didn't cover the market back then.)

Lies She Won't Confess To:

• She didn't know about the FALN pardons.
• She didn't know that her brothers were being paid to get pardons that Clinton granted.
• Taking the White House gifts was a clerical error.
• She didn't know that her staff would fire the travel office staff after she told them to do so.
• She didn't know that the Peter Paul fundraiser in Hollywood in 2000 cost $700,000 more than she reported it had.
• She opposed NAFTA at the time.
• She was instrumental in the Irish peace process.
• She urged Bill to intervene in Rwanda.
• She played a role in the '90s economic recovery.
• The billing records showed up on their own.
• She thought Bill was innocent when the Monica scandal broke.
• She was always a Yankees fan.
• She had nothing to do with the New Square Hasidic pardons (after they voted for her 1,400-12 and she attended a meeting at the White House about the pardons).
• She negotiated for the release of refugees in Macedonia (who were released the day before she got there).

With a record like this, could you blame anyone from calling the Clintons bunch of dishonest shady lowlife?

Clinton Strategist Penn Resigns From Campaign

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Mark Penn, the Clinton campaign's chief strategist, has resigned from that role following a conflict of interest stirred up by work he's done at the PR firm where he is CEO.

It was reported late last week that Mr. Penn, who has rubbed many Clinton loyalists the wrong way from the start of the campaign, recently had met with Colombia's ambassador to the U.S. to discuss an effort to get congressional approval of a bilateral free-trade agreement, a major hot-button issue in this campaign. Hillary Clinton opposes the agreement. Mr. Penn conducted the meeting in his capacity as CEO of WPP Group's Burson-Marsteller, which lobbies on the matter on behalf of the country here in the U.S. Related Story:

Clinton Strategist's Prestige Diminished as Campaign Loses Momentum

After initially offering no comment on the meeting, Mr. Penn eventually called it an error, which sparked a swift reaction from Burson's client. The Colombian government issued a statement saying it was terminating its contract and that Mr. Penn's characterization of the meeting was "unacceptable."

The airing of this conflict of interest is the latest in a series of missteps for the campaign that have helped squander Ms. Clinton's status as the presumptive winner of the nomination. The campaign has struggled to nail the right message to woo voters and maintain a consistent brand.

'This is unprecedented'
Mr. Penn's decision to sacrifice one client relationship to save face in another has left some in the PR industry baffled. Speaking on background, one executive from a top-10 agency told Ad Age this morning that Mr. Penn's actions might cause concern from other clients.

"It's going to enrage some clients and certainly baffle the rest," the executive said. "I'm not sure I've ever seen a CEO throw a client so publicly under the bus for no other reason than that it conflicts with his other job. This is unprecedented."

A spokesman for the agency declined to comment.

The conflicts between Burson's client list and Ms. Clinton's stance on a number of issues have been well-documented since the campaign began. In Ad Age interviews with a number of high-ranking executives in the PR industry who did not want to be named, weeks before the news broke of Mr. Penn's meeting with the Colombian ambassador, the sentiment was strong that something like this eventually would happen.

Why not take leave?
One executive from a Washington-based agency wondered why Mr. Penn hadn't simply stepped down from his position at Burson while running the campaign to avoid these types of conflicts.

"Hillary's positions on so many things are going to run contrary to Burson's clients' interest," the executive said. "The fact is, on pharma, nuclear energy, labor issues and a whole list of shit, Mark, who is the Burson representation, has been at odds with Hillary's positions. And I just never understood -- and still can't to this day understand: Why create a controversy for your client?"

In an interview before the Colombia issue blew up, Democratic strategist Bob Shrum rather prophetically said Mr. Penn's and Ms. Clinton's interests would have been best served if he had devoted his time solely to the campaign.

"You just create a lot of static and problems," he said. "In 2000 and 2004, Mike Donlon, Ted Devine and I gave up all of our stock and left Glover Park while doing the presidential races. I'm not saying we are holier than thou, but people can make their own decisions, like Mr. Penn. I'm not going to criticize his choice, [but] at times [Ms. Clinton] has paid a price for it."
