Power, cost of transportation. . . .basically, infrastructure. Don't you think it's a better idea to improve infrastructure than to fund job creation in other countries? If you close down Dangote Cement and allow importation, you are simply sacking Nigerians, losing tax revenue and employing foreigners/paying tax to foreign governments.
It's not about employing foreigners, it's more about productivity and efficiency.

Dangote could have invested in something more productive than cement since we can't efficiently produce cement.

What is happening is that, the people he is paying are being affected by the price he charges cause even they pay house rent.

The extra money spent on cement could be spent on other commodities helping the industries of those commodities grow. This isn't about emplying foreigners. Nigeria should capitalize on what she can produce efficiently more than others and see if they won't import from us too. It's that simple. What Dangote is doing is because of the monopolistic power he has in the industry. If Dangote had serious competition from other manufacturers abroad, he will be forced to find an efficient way to produce cement or go out of business. Efficiency is more important in economics than "patriotic rhetorics"

I'm all for protecting our local manufacturers but if importing is cheaper, then our local manufacturers need to be efficient. We can't encourage mediocrity in the name of patriotism.

Nigeria cannot produce anything efficiently so long as the infrastructure deficit plaguing the country remains unsolved. That is why we are largely an import dependent nation. We don't produce. We only consume. Even foodstuff like rice, beans, fish, flour, sugar are all imported due to uncompetitive local production. There is nothing produced in Nigeria that isn't produced cheaper in foreign countries. Should we now outsource all our industries?

750 thousand jobs were lost in the textile industry and billions in textile plant investment were destroyed after we outsourced it to china. And the same Dangote was one of the biggest textile manufacturers. And you expect him to watch idly and let the same thing repeat itself in cement after he has sunk in billions of dollars in investment? You are grossly naive.

Even the oil "we" produce costs $22 per barrel to produce while it costs $1 - $2 per barrel in the Middle East.If oil prices crash to below our production cost, then what happens?

I'll return to the part of my post that you ignored. If infrastructure is the problem, don't you think we can efficiently produce cement with 24 hours power, working railways, etc and if that's the case, don't you think it's better for our economy if we have 24 hours power, functional railways, etc. Don't you think that's a better goal, than shutting down Dangote Cement and importing products (which would hurt the value of our currency, make us relinquish control of cement production and availability (since we'll be subject to the regulations and whims of foreign governments), etc?

I believe that if there's a problem, it's better to solve it than to run away from it. The issue of infrastructure affects many businesses in Nigeria, not just cement and if that problem is solved it will open up many opportunities across different sectors in our economy. What other business can he invest in that would not suffer the same problem of poor infrastructure? And like he said, he only invests in businesses that he understands. He doesn't invest in businesses that he doesn't understand. (Imagine Mercedes Benz investing in production of mattresses, because of poor infrastructure).

Lmao.. You are arguing in circles bros..

No one is saying shut down Dangote, I'm saying since we can't efficiently produce cement, we should be importing it so we can allocate our scarce resources to other ventures. What is going on is that Dangote has that monopolistic power in the cement industry and at the same time lobbied to ban cement importation. So no matter what Nigerians do, we are forced to buy cement at higher than efficient prices. This kills production base because the cost of production for every venture is increased by the amount of cement used in building the factories etc..

What I'm saying is allow serious competition in the cement industry so Nigerians can pay a fair price for cement. Dangote's price fixing powers is ruinous to our economy.

Also, since infrastructure is the problem and there is no quick fix, does that mean we have to pay higher price for everything when we can get it cheaper elsewhere? Being patriotic is good but blind patriotism is evil. If Nigeria can not produce Cement at a cost that is competitive, we shouldn't be producing cememnt simple!!

I believe in competition, which spurs growth and lowers prices.

Fine, why dont u start your own business and compete. Dangote never stop anyone, he didnt develop the system, he is using the system to his advantange, that is what gud business men do, find the loop holes. Think of Microsoft.

1) You still haven't told us what other productive ventures you are talking about. What other ventures can we efficiently engage in?

2) Dangote is not the only one producing cement in Nigeria (have you heard of Lafarge/Wapco, Eastern Bulkcem, etc?). Therefore, others can compete, so long as they also produce cement in Nigeria.

3) The answer is to fix infrastructure. Before 2001 we had a terrible telecommunications system. What happened after 2001?

4) You remind me of SAP. You are not aware of it, but what you are advocating is that we kill manufacturing in Nigeria and become completely import dependent. What then happens to jobs, our currency, our purchasing power, etc? Otherwise, tell us what other productive venture we can efficiently engage in?
