nnenna.1:Just incase you haven't heard. Those languages you just mentioned--Mandarin and English-- belong to world class beaters!; Civilizations that were built through the the sweat brawn and brains from men through time; not some tiny clan in your village! The English and Chinese were not in their caves and little huts beating their chests to the supremacy of their cultures or languages. They toiled, built useful things like the gun powder and steam boat; explored the world, homogenized their societies, consolidated and dominated other peoples like "your folks" and continue to weild so much power and influence today in world. Contrary to what you think, I'm all for the adoption of a native language as Nigeria's lingua franca-- i don't care which, let it be hausa or yoruba; but going by your parochial stance it's a safe bet you'll be all up in arms if it's nothing but your native tongue! |

orgasticdance: And how did they become world-class beaters? By not spreading their languages or not making sure that their cultures, values, inventions were heard? By reasoning like sheep such as yourself? You see why your posts reek of contradictions and stuupidity? 2 Likes |

Tufiakwa! It's amazing how people who can't come up with any thing persuasive to say resort to personal attacks--Too easy. Sir I made that decision at 6, 20 years should have been enough time to rescind my mistakes. My point is, I can live with people being in love with their native cultures and traditions--personally I don't give a fig, in my grave it won't count-- i am practical and adopt whatever works for me. And in this life english has served me wellu wellu wellu even if it came at the expense of not being able to string a sentence in igbo. If the fact irritates u, get out of your house, watch the birds, and learn to live a little. |

orgasticdance: Wetin consign me consign pesin wey dem born for Switzerland? Do you know if I was born in Nigeria or the U.S? Where I was born isn't the issue, nor should it be a yardstick, nonetheless, I speak Igbo fluently, and write Igbo to a great extent. What business of mine is it? Please slow your roll and DON'T EVER step at me like that again, stay on your damn lane. I speak Igbo because I'm one, not because of any attachment of birth place or otherwise. If you're french and can't speak french, SORRY. If you're German and can't speak your language, ndo...So if you're Igbo and cant speak Igbo... I pity you. My parents made the conscious decision to speak Igbo and same rule follows through us. My nephew Tobenna just turned four, whenever my mom (his grandma) goes visiting to their place, well guess what, he says "grandma grandma, kedu". When he chats on the phone with grandma or pa, yes they influence him with Igbo "NOT LORD IT OVER HIM". Was he born in Nigeria? Now tell me when he gets to age of 10, tell me why he won't speak Igbo gradually and fluently by the time he's older. My friend, leave matter. If you chose not to speak Igbo and give flimsy nonsense excuse about it, that's on you, not my damn business... Even the holy Bible said, "If you train a child in a particular way, when he grows old, he will NEVER depart from it. There are MANY of us on NL, who where born here or came here at little ages or whatever, we speak and write Igbo like no mans business, YET, carry on with English and write it perfectly...Go to the Igbo learning thread, you will see for yourself. 2 Likes |

If that's the path he wants to tow, that's a conscientious decision he made, and like he said, if he wanted to rescind his decision, he would have done so by now. |

orgasticdance: ^^can't u mount a better argument? Leave the hurt and petty traditional sentiment aside. I'm all for learning... I was about to argue back when I read your ignorant comment about Igbos having no script without the white man. then I knew it would be useless to waste my time on you. Igbo had an ancient script called Nsibidi : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nsibidi it is also used by related tribes like the Ekoi, etc. .. Infact your whitemen and christianity caused the extinction and almost dissapearance of the script. 1 Like |

Re: Chinua Achebe To Be Buried At Night by PAGAN9JA(m): 9:09am On May 18, 2013 |
Ikenga nri: you are doomed. Illiteracy is ur best friend. Achebe is a practising christian till death. you are doomed yourself. Achebe was a christian at first, only because his dad converted. but later on, he realised that traditional religion was the way. JEFFREY BROWN: And I was interested to read that your own parents were converts to Christianity... CHINUA ACHEBE: Yes. JEFFREY BROWN: ... and then missionaries traveling around the country. CHINUA ACHEBE: That's right. That's right. I was steeped in religion, the religion of the foreigners , because I wasn't there when my father converted, and so that was one aspect of life. I wasn't questioning it. In fact,at first, I thought that Christianity was very a good and a very valuable thing for us. But after a while , I began to feel that the story that I was told about this religion wasn't perhaps completely whole, that something was left out. There was no attempt to understand what was behind the Ibo religion. It was simply dismissed as the worship of stones and, you know, not as good as Christianity. In Nekede, Achebe gained an appreciation for Mbari, a traditional art form which seeks to invoke the Gods' protection through symbolic sacrifices in the form of sculpture and collage. |
