A report by the United Nations has indicated that the provision of meals for school children was still lacking in many developing countries, including Nigeria. The State of School Feeding Worldwide report by World Food Programme (WFP) was made public at the UN Headquarters on Friday.

The report stressed the importance of providing meals for school children, particularly in times of crises.

The UN Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the report provides global analysis of school feeding programmes in developed and developing nations.

According to WFP, about 368 million children, about one in five, get a meal at school every day in 169 developing and developed countries. In Nigeria, according to the report, fewer than 500,000 children are being fed in schools. However, countries such as Ghana, Zambia, Lesotho, Egypt, Cape Verde, Morocco, Sudan, Ivory Coast have a better coverage of their children. Lesotho and Cape verde feed their school kids, 100 per cent, the report indicated.cameroon and Nigeria perform very poorly, with Nigeria the worst.

It explained that despite the global nature of school feeding, the coverage of these programmes was lowest where they are most needed. For more on the WFP report, please click this http://documents.wfp.org/stellent/groups/public/documents/communications/wfp257482.pdf

“In low-income countries, only 18 per cent receive daily meals at school, compared to nearly 49 per cent of children in middle-income countries. Global investment in these programmes is about $75 billion, with most coming from government budgets.

“While these may seem like a large investment, the benefits are even greater as the report states that for every $1 spent by government and donors, at least three dollars are gained in economic returns,'' it said.

It stressed in the past five years, at least 38 countries have scaled up their school feeding programmes in response to a crisis, whether related to food prices, conflict, natural disaster or financial volatility.

School children: UN calls for feeding agenda

“School feeding assures that where quality education is available, children are able to take advantage of the opportunity to learn. It is an investment that pays off in the future with better-educated, stronger and healthier adults.

“It is also a critical safety net to prevent the most vulnerable from suffering in times of crisis," the report quoted the Executive Director of WFP, Ertharin Cousin as saying.

The report also quoted lead author, Carmen Burbano as saying that “during the food and fuel crises in 2008, many governments struggled to protect the most vulnerable from hunger and looked to school meals to achieve that.

“In the current recession, even wealthy nations are examining how school meals can prevent families sliding deeper into poverty and hunger."

WFP had been operating school meals programmes in developing countries for almost 50 years.

In 2012, the agency provided meals or nutritious snacks in school for 24.7 million children in 63 countries.

This included take-home rations for 1.3 million girls and 500,000 boys, providing an incentive for poor families to keep their children in class.

The Un will celebrate Children’s Day on 27 May.

When teachers are ''hungrier'' the pupils. If given the food they will feed themselves and their families first and then give the children the left over.

Osun state has already been doing this for her school kids since Aregbesola started implementing his revamped education policy. It is one of the highlights of his many achievements in Osun.

It is a good thing to feed school kids, but UN has no right to tell Nigeria what to do.Unless they are ready to support that instruction.
Make dem United Nations give Nigeria money for that.
After-all, Pakistan with a bigger GDP than Nigeria receive billions of dollars from dem every year.
Re: UN Urges Nigeria To Feed School Kids by koruji(m): 3:07am On May 26, 2013
It is a recommendation, not a must do.
What is so bad in advising a country about the best way to take care of her own children?
I am telling you to eat at least once a day - but since I have no right to tell you what to do...

It is a good idea, but for virtually all states in nigeria, it is not practicable. Any state who claims to be feeding school children is oiling a propaganda machinery, and most likely such feeding programme is haphazardly done.

If there are 500,000 school children in a state, and state govt decides to spend N100 on each child's feeding daily, 500,000 * 100= N50 million daily, as such in a month, we have N50 million * 20+ = N1 billion+ .

Spending 1 billion naira to feed school children monthly is what i will not advise any state govt to do at the moment.

What is average total revenue(Igr + allocation) in a month for most states in nigeria ? May be N5/6 billion.

The logical thing any sane govt should think is to aggresively increase its IGR, may be , just may be feeding school children can be considered

It is good for the UN to say this but it is better for them to advise Chevron,Mobil, cocacola, mercedes and all the big brands of the G8 countries to implement policies that have direct impact on the poor and most vunerable members of the Nigerian society.it will take nothing from these foreign companied to feed all primary school Kids in public schools in Nigeria. These companies individualy make more money than the Nigerian state from our natural resources and from patronage of the Nigerian populace of their goods and services.
They make billions of dollars from Nigeria everyday.spending 2million dollars each month feeding all public school children is a meagre amount of money for them.
UN,America,Britain and the G8 team do some soul searching, do the right thing.

how? through propaganda ?!.

What is Rochas total budget for education in a year?

All these socialist ideals are good, but are not practicable.

Nigeria's annual budget of 5 trillion naira is that of some universities in some saner climes.

167 million people no be joke.

my little search showed it is for (pri 1-3) a total of 155,318 pupils. It is not bad, but i have reservations about such programmes for a state like Osun

What of the Trillions your selfish clueless government loot daily? For ur info,UN is not instructing your visionless Government, they are commenting on the reports on their table. You want a peaceful nation, don't you? Yet you don't want to make sacrifices by investing in your kids, providing jobs. Common water and electricity, your USELESS so called Giant of Africa can't provide. If our society must be rid of vices, attacks, armed robberies,we must tackle the root cause;corruption.
