Telecommunications network operators have promised to support the recently inaugurated emergency number, 767 for Lagos State, the Managing Director Contact Solutions Limited, Mr. Abiodun Adeoye, has said.

According to Adeoye, whose firm collaborated with the state government to facilitate the service, before now, there was no harmonised emergency number in any state of the federation.

In details made available to our correspondent on Monday, Adeoye stated that operators would prioritise the service above regular calls, thereby freeing network space for people in emergency situations to use to seek help.

He said, “On our part, we at Contact Solutions are pleased to provide the infrastructural resources to achieve the government’s objectives of providing a safe environment for Lagosians. We have worked with the Lagos State Government and the network providers to implement this service.

“We have been assured by the network providers that the emergency line, 767, will be kept free and uncluttered for that crucial call you will make to safe a life or a situation.

“We pledge that you will be treated like the cherished and treasured Lagos citizen that you are on the line. We also promise that no matter the level of network congestion, which may exist at any time, our 24/7 emergency line 767 would be cleared for you. It is our promise. It is our word. It is our bond. A bond with which Contact Solutions is known beyond our borders.”

He said the use to which people put their telephones was more important than the teledensity, the number of telephone which is lines per thousand persons, because it was what determined productivity.

“Ultimately it is not the number of telephone lines we have as a country that is important, rather, it is the use to which these lines are put into for productive and I daresay, life-saving purposes.”

Adeoye advised Lagosians who have to use the 767 to give a vivid and clear description to the operator on the incident they were reporting.

He also asked would-be users to be calm while on the line. He said this would enable a quick response to emergency situations.

The number was recently inaugurated by Governor Babatunde Fashola, who also used the occasion to express appreciation to Contact Solutions for its resilience and commitment to the project.

At the ceremony where the state deputy governor, Mrs. Sarah Sosan and members of the executive council were present, not a few government officials, exco members and other stakeholders were pleasantly surprised at the ease with which the system powered by Contact Solutions Limited operates.

Fashola had particularly commended the Company for its resilience. In his exact words, the Governor who took eyes off his speech to commend ConSol said, “ConSol has shown the spirit of the enterprise of Lagosian, the Nigerian spirit and the ‘can do’ spirit.” The governor also made the point of remarking that ConSol is a fully indigenous company.

The launch marked the first time since the advent of telecom revolution in Nigeria in 2001 service that all major service providers would be linked to the same emergency number The 767 is toll free on MTN, Glo, Celtel and Starcomms.

Unemployment isn't the only issue, and it can't be solved by the government, if people don't want to start companies. What companies will people be working for, if there are none?

Stick to the issue at hand. Emergency number 767
