FG Bans Civil Servants From Chieftaincy Titles by bcomputer101: 12:21am On Jun 26, 2013
The Federal Government on Tuesday banned the conferment of chieftaincy titles and “other sundry awards” on civil servants until after their retirement or disengagement from service.

The Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji, in a circular sent to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government however directed that where the traditional titles were mandatory by inheritance, “due clearance must be obtained from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation” through his office.

A statement issued in Abuja by the Director (Communications) in the Office of the HOS, Mr. Tope Ajakaiye, said “it has come to the notice of government that some civil servants are in the practice of soliciting for chieftaincy titles and sundry awards, an act, which is inimical to the principles of anonymity, integrity and political neutrality which are the core values of the civil service.”

The statement reads: “Federal Civil Servants have been banned from accepting chieftaincy titles and other sundry awards until after their retirement or disengagement from the civil service.

“In a circular sent to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji said that it has come to the notice of government that some civil servants are in the practice of soliciting for chieftaincy titles and sundry awards, an act, which he said, is inimical to the principles of anonymity, integrity and political neutrality which are the core values of the civil service.”

God Bless the Progressives for showing the PDP-led FG the way. This is exactly what the progressive Governor of the State of Osun did last year.

I commend GEJ for being a student of the progressive governors and will also encourage him to continue learning till 2015 when he will have to vacate Aso rock.

Circular To All EXCO members and other political Appointees

Prohibition of Chieftaincy/Honorary Titles By Political Office Holders

In Recent times, it has been observed that some political functionaries in the state have been receiving chieftaincy/honorary titles even while they are still holing public offices. This also applies to honorary academic degrees being indiscriminately awarded and accepted by political functionaries. This is unacceptable.

For the avoidance of doubt, it is the policy of the present government that any political functionary who is interested in chieftaincy or honorary title should defer it until after leaving public office.

Consequently, the state Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola has directed that all political appointees in the state should desist forthwith from doing so. Anyone who violates this directive would be appropriately sanctioned

Kindly Ensure that this circular letter is given the seriousness it deserves.

Gboyega Oyetola
Chief Of Staff to the Governor

Mr. "President in Waiting" BRF also did thesame thing last year. God bless the progressives for setting the pace

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola on Saturday politely declined the honour of a chieftaincy title from a royal father, Oniru of Iru land, Lagos, Oba Abidun Idowu Oniru.

He, however, received the award of excellence conferred on him by the monarch who was celebrating his 75th birthday and 18th coronation anniversary. While expressing his appreciation to Oba Oniru for honouring him, Fashola said the task of governance required absolute focus and would want the chieftaincy title to wait for now.

He said, “Kabiyesi and his chiefs can continue to lead us, let them deal with all those traditional and chieftaincy issues. At the appropriate time, we will come and join them, but for now, leave us in our suits, booths, overalls and helmets, because this agbada is not good for clearing refuse and tarring the roads.”

On the award for excellence, Fashola said it was not for him; rather he dedicated it to all the civil servants in the state who he said were responsible for the giant strides of his administration.

Fashola said “This award does not belong to me; it belongs to all the public servants in Lagos State who do the great work that is responsible for the progress in the state.”

While acknowledging the mornach’s exemplary leadership and support for his administration and his predecessors, the governor expressed his gratitude to the Oniru on behalf of members of the state executive council.

He confessed that when the state Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure, Prince Segun Oniru, informed him of the event, and told him that the Kabiyesi wanted to present him with something, he had made it clear that he would not attend the event if what the Kabiyesi wanted to present to him was going to be a chieftaincy title, but that Oniru had assured him that that would not be the case.

Former Lagos State governor and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Senator Bola Tinubu was also conferred with an award of excellence.

But Tinubu was not present as he had travelled to the United States.

Other dignitaries at the occasion included the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade, Oba Abdulfatai Aromire Ojora, Oba Tijani Akinloye, Chief GOK Ajayi, (SAN), former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Sunday Adewusi, chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, as well as all the white cap chiefs.

Even though the government might have a very good reason to this effect, i don't think it's anyone's business if any civil servant decides to take a chieftain people. It's their personal life and they should live it as they pls as long as it doesn't affect there jobs as government workers. If this continues, very soon civil servants will be prohibited from eating sliced bread and forced to eat cassava bread. SMDH.

You people must think the many readers on here are as daft as you and cant see that you have turned every thread into politics. When you get likes from your fellow ACN peeps, maybe it gives you a false impression that the whole Nigeria is agreeing with you. What in the world is the correlation between the topic and what you just posted. You sound very childish and petty and it is even worse that you dont even seem to realise it and in your childlike mind, you are making sense. SMH for you!

Bro, a valid point u have here. But when there are two weevils in the bag of beans, you choose the lesser of the two weevils (hence you choose the less evil).
The corruption that these chieftancy/honorary titles promote is enough to justify it.
Senate, Public office holders nko? Let those unworthy thieves go-a-hunting yeye Phd when they're out of office! angry

Meanwhile, ogbeni aregbesola, Governor Fashola God bless you.

You made a lot of valid points and I know you understand Nigeria very well. You've successfully summarized Nigeria's problems.

But unfortunately, no government will or can do all the things you proposed. Our politicians lack ideas, and more importantly they lack the will to change from their corrupt ways. Their neck deep in godfatherism, nepotism and sheer lack of regard for other people except themselves.

I've come to realize that they don't see things our way - how can they? Let's be honest. They are living an excessive life, they have all they want and more, their children are not in this country and the people, sorry, sycophants surrounding them are praising them to high heavens. How can they understand what we common men are going through?

This is where the masses come in. This is where we should use the only power we have over them - the power of number to force them into seeing things our way. This is when we should occupy the street and demand for what is rightly ours.

Waiting for a messiah that will never come is exactly what they want us to do while they keep enriching themselves and their next ten generation.

Good move by the FG. It is foolhardy to climb to trees at thesame time just because you have two foots.
Any person that wants a chieftancy tittle should leave the civil service first.

commendable move, the witch hunting method of fighting corruption has not yielded any result, hence the approach of reforming the institutions and the civil service is obviously the best place to start. The culture of giving and receiving gratification is been addressed in the civil service and my peeps on nairalland are bemused wink
