Whichever way you decide to do it, the most pivotal thing is that you intimate your breakup to that person. Why look for an apt modus operandi when you're still gonna hurt their feelings anyway. You can use a text as long as you write your rationale for your breakup which of course failure to do so may warrant the other party to call or demand a tete a tete for your decision.

Always best to do it in person.

Meeting her in person could make you retract your decision. She may talk you into coming back, plus the shedding of tears part, can we just skip it. Furthermore, what if you're in US and her locus is 9ja. A text or call could suffice for an apt dissolve. You do not need to come back to 9ja for an apposite breakup. Anyways just my exception.

@Topic: No it's not proper.

Sometimes it is better to do it via sms when the partner is unpredictable because you may be abused physically.

If we're're talking about LDRs and the two parties are in different parts of the world, then obviously we've an exception. But even then, it's more appropriate to pick up the phone and call him/her, not text.

It is not proper but once done, you have to back it up with explanations when you see the person involved.

Like yield said, it is exceptional and can be excused when it comes to long distance relationships, but a call in this instance is more appropriate than text message.
