...yes, most of the western nations like US n Uk have a more advanced version of this bomb detection robot n also d US deployed some in countries like Iraq n Afghanistan, but d advantage of naija developing its own version of this robot is that it will save us millions of dollars if we make our own instead of buying from countries like d US.

Just give our countrymen n GEJ 4 this great effort

So which one do you want? The one that is spiritually existing.
They didn't buy or assemble the robot from anyone or from a manual. Hence they invented. Pls note that unless you are fully aware of all the specs of the nigerian version of the robot, you cannot fully disband this innovation as not being an invention simply because there are other robots out their doing similar function.
I use a simple analogy. You can't say the Iphone isn't an invention simply becos the concept of the smart phone was invented before the iphone. J̶̲̥̅̊u̶̲̥̅̊S̤̥̈̊τ̲̣̣̥ as you can't say the smart phone isn't an invention simply becos the telephone was invented by Bell before the smart phone.
You can only dismiss the iphone as an invention if there exist another phone exactly like the iphone doing exactly what it does.
The fact that the technology is already existing is a well know fact, but the presence of a technology doesn't negate the innovative creation (aka invention) of a product within that niche.
We should learn to be open minded and focus on the content of stories, and not on journalistic theatrics that characterize nigerian headlines.

karl max: Experts in bomb detonation would soon not need to get closer to such dangerous objects to neutralise them as the Nigerian Airforce has invented a robot to undertake such task from a far distance.

Commandant of the Nigerian Airforce Institute of Technology (NAFIT), Kaduna, John Oshoniyi on Monday said the institute had developed a bomb detective robot capable of detecting bombs from afar, and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for
At a news conference in preparation for the 42nd graduation ceremony of the institute, the commandant said the bomb detonating robot, would assist the security agencies to check the series of bombings by terrorist groups.

The Boko Haram terrorists group has been unleashing waves of violence attacks in the northern part of Nigeria since 2009, and bombs have become its favourite lethal weapon.

On 14 February 2012, a policeman, Sunday Badang, was killed while attempting to detonate a bomb wrapped inside a bag with bare hands along Ungwar Seriki area of Kaduna metropolis.

As a result of that unfortunate incident, NAFIT went into research that led to the invention of this unmanned robot.

Displaying the robot before newsmen, Mr Oshoniyi said the equipment would be presented to the public as soon as it is ready, adding that the UAV, the first in Africa, was a product of the transformation agenda of the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in attaining higher pedestal in military aviation and defence related technology.

Do you really know what INVENTION means? How can you invent what already exist.
Bomb detectors have long existed in so many other countries so please rephrase the topic as "NIGERIA IMPORTS BOMB DETECTORS"

where are the fabricated parts manufactured?
Where are the microchips manufactured?
where are the cameras manufactured?
where are the sensors manufactured?
Even tires are not manufactured in Nigeria.

So how come its invented in Nigeria? Please don't misinform the public.

My broda do you know the definition of invention?
An invention is a unique or novel device,
method, composition or process. It may be
an improvement upon a machine or product,
or a new process for creating an object or a
result

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invention

My brother please loo'k clearly at the bolded.
Do you know the full specs of the robot?
Do you know if any unique attribute as been added to the nigerian design to make it a unique concept and worthy of being patent?
So if I invent a new way of making noodles and call it xyz noodles, its not an invention cos others are already making indomie and mimi noddles shey?
Its not an invention cos its made in nigeria right?
Its not an invention cos I have 2 import the materials I need ba?

Last year the argument was about the difference between "defuse" and "detonate". This year the argument is about the meaning of the word "invent".

Now, the robot might be an invention or the use of the word might just be a mistake by the journalist, but at the moment we don't know which is the case.

Here's an example of the use of the word "invent".

The Salty Dog 502 is a drone that can land on an aircraft carrier. The drone was unveiled recently. (Note: there have been drones since as far back as the 1970s, probably even before then)

The X-47B drone, invented to be operated from the sea, was first tested this past May.

Arguments like this makes the claims of the Airforce look dubious. This is the major problem we have in Nigeria,we are never straight forward in our claims or dealings. We always want to claim beyond what we have achieved just like Philip Emeagwali claimed to have invented the internet only to exposed as fraud a few years later. The Airforce did not invent anything ,they only developed an homegrown version of an existing invention. Kai naija and claiming. undecided

If Americans read through this thread they will rubbish these claims and even belittle our Airforce. Let us be honest and straight forward for once,is that too much to ask? Yes our Airforce built their own Bomb detonation robot and we are proud of them for that but they DID NOT INVENT the technology. We don't even have a picture or video demonstration of their robot, yet you are making false claims. The more you claim they invented it ,the more you ridicule their efforts.Imagine if a Nigerian scientists make a new headache drug that has paracetamol as one of it main ingredients then claim he invented paracetamol,he will be made a laughing stock of by the medical industry. Please stop this "invention" claims as you are turning the whole thing into one big joke.

naptu2: Anyway, I'm happy that we are getting back on track. In 1988 I was excited when I heard that they were going to commission the first made in Nigeria air force plane ( a trainer/reconnaissance plane), the Air Beetle. I was a bit disappointed when I discovered that it was based on Van's Aircraft. However, it was a beginning.

Air Beetle

Political instability and changes in government meant that we did not improve on that start. The return to democracy has seen us make a fresh start with the following:

The Prowler. An armoured personnel carrier that's built by the Obasa brothers.

The Proforce Pf1. An armoured personnel carrier that's built by a private nigerian company.

Proforce is a private nigerian defence company that manufactures armoured cars, armoured boats, armoured buses and trucks, ballistic helmets and bullet-proof vests. Proforce's website:

http://www.proforcedefence.com/index.php/production

Johnson and Victor Obasa are brothers from Ekiti State in Nigeria. They graduated from the New York Institute of Technology, returned to Nigeria and set up Obasa Speciality Vehicles (OSV). OSV makes armoured cars, fire fighting vehicles, etc.

Obasa Specialty Vehicles website: http://lagos411.com/obasasv/index.html

The Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) is a government owned defence company that was established by an act of parliament in 1964. DICON makes armoured personnel carriers, AK47 assault rifles, FN-FAL rifles, ballistic helmets, bullet-proof vests, etc.

DICON's website:

The Air Force Institute of Technology makes the Amebo series of drones and they also developed the bomb detonating robot.

Unfortunately the institute's website is currently down.

it appears these airfore guys are more creative than the other branches of the military.

However, this is not the first time the military or anu other iinstitute for that matter will come out with prototypes/technology demostrators and then that will be the end of the research. The machinne will only be useful when it is produced in sufficient numbers; one machine cannot be used al over nigeria.

As with the drones, it's like Mr Oshonoyi has no idea that Denel of South Africa builds and sells drones so does Egypt. The man is not informed. he should sharap. we are happy we are moving forward but he shoulld not caim what is not.

another point of correction, the drones and the robot are not inventions of the airforce institute; you invent sth when u are the first to create such. abeg make we dey use english well. the word 'build' would have been appropriate.

Re: Airforce Invents Bomb Detecting Robot To Fight Boko Haram by nelklyn(m): 1:09am On Jul 24, 2013
Nothing special about putting together pieces of electronic components together and claiming invention. A bunch of actuators, sensors, gyroscopes, motors, tires and probably an atmel AVR or PIC chip will do. That's not just all what robotics is all about, i mean DARPA started building this things way back in the 70's and so did the russians. Right now when it comes to military technology, I think Missile Guidance and Control Systems will not be a bad start.
This is Nigeria, they even probably just purchased the parts and coupled it here in Nigeria and now claimed to have built it from the scratch.
Well to be frank, I don't care if they actually made it or not, it doesn't change the fact that this is old technology and I read someone saying something about Nigeria having a satellite, are you kidding me? Who man those? Who wrote the softwares used in monitoring them? Please the reason why BH guys still run around killing people is because they know Nigeria doesn't have the technology to out do them. Let's say we have just one satellite in orbit...that alone would be enough to track down those bastards, send in a drone and get a clean swipe.
There is no way nigeria is going to go far when it comes to technology if they can't provide a dependable power supply and affordable internet connectivity for a start as well as change the school curriculums.
Re: Airforce Invents Bomb Detecting Robot To Fight Boko Haram by Horus(m): 1:28am On Jul 24, 2013
A 15 year old Nigerian with the right knowlege can build a similar robot. There is a lot of young Nigerian genius but the medias are not
