We have such rough seas down here even a IPV has to be over 60m or it won't fare very well.

OPVs will be more than 80m. Our current OPVs - converted Israeli missile craft - were acquired when no one else would sell due to sanctions, and will be withdrawn from service.
Sailors will be pleased cos the design suited the Mediterranean and they had terrible sea-keeping.

That's why I envy navies working in calmer waters cos they can buy lots of smaller vessels.

Personal opinion: I suspect the Sea Axe design is the way of the future for IPVs and OPVs.

I think the logical way forward for the SA Navy is to simply continue with acquiring more of these ipvs, honestly with a range of 4000NM what extra capacity will the opvs bring. The fleet can be composed of 6 of these Biro ipvs and the Meko, the rationale of having an opv in between there is indulgent IMO. 6 of these will only cost R3bn if not less and they can have an all SA combat system, comms and radar, allowing exports (as Kabe alluded to they can be marketed as small corvettes and for only $35m each, very compelling value proposition for many African countries)

I agree with this comment, I really don't see a need for an OPV with these ships. Just for clarity purposes they are the same length as the Buyan M.

This Ship is also 2 meters longer than NNS Lana.

The biggest advantage is the ships are locally made, I just can't wait for the time Nigeria starts building a significant number of our capital ships in country.

BH attacked DABANGA, a village around kousseri leading to the intervention of the BIR.
Results: 1 BIR killed, several BH fighters killed, 5 bodies counted but guess they carried their wounded and dead bodies away.
5 pickup retrieved with several weapons also collected.

Troops of Operation Tura Takaibango today killed scores of insurgents on the fringes of Sambisa forest, the troops laid a successful ambush on BokoHaram fighters. Weapons were recovered, the COAS has congratulated the troops for their gallantry pics too gory.

I wonder how these BH guys recover after such losses incurred from nigerians, cameroonians and even the chadians. Yet they still have the ability to attack and cause havoc every where.

I don't think the victories tell the full story. Across that region of Nigeria, northern part of Cameron, Chad and Niger republic, there is an issue of rampant illiteracy, when you add poverty so it's easy to recruit irrespective of religious extremism.

Off course we can't deny that there have been serious setbacks in Nigeria, Chad & Cameroun. The situation in Mali and Libya also fuel the illicit flow of arms.

Interesting moniker, by the way.
I take the opposite view: we shouldn't have bothered with the IPVs. 12 OPVs greater than 80m is what the SA Navy needs to complement the frigates. Here's why:
1) our coastline means we patrol both Indian and Atlantic Oceans, so if we have 12, 4 will always be available meaning 2 on each coast;

2) If we had to scale down Biro, IPVs should've been postponed because as the Navy says, our rough seas necessitate longer vessels, meaning OPVs will extended range and better seakeeping;

3) speak to any sailor here and they'll tell you a longer vessel handles the length of waves in our seas better.

Personally, I don't understand why, if budgetary constraints meant BIRO had to be scaled back, it was the OPVs - preferred by the Navy - that were cut and not the IPVs.
And seeing this decision was taken under the corrupt Zuma administration, I'm even more befuddled.

This is the breakdown of the US defence budget 2015. The line items are universal:salaries,welfare,health and pensions come under military personnel. Ops/maintenance, RND and procurement round out the figure. Typically the army and AF consume the lions share with the Navy getting 15-20%. Generally,this is true in Pakistan,Kenya,Uruguay or Australia.
If the cake itself is small screeching for Su 34s won't help anyone.
