During the time of cross-border insurgency in South Africa, both the Mozambican and Zimbabwean border were made very high on the South African side and then electrified (for hundreds of kilometers). At some point Eland 90s and Ratels would be seen patrolling on the Mozambican/SA border as a security statement to scare off any potential danger either posed by insurgents or their state allies.
Kenya is also erecting a wall with electric fence on top and trenches plus observation stations although it might take lnger with budget contrans.... but the Somali govt is campagning against it in the international community accusing kenya of infringing them

Ethiopia troops pull out of Somalia towns

By AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE, ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Oct 11 – Hundreds of Ethiopian troops pulled out of a town in central Somalia Tuesday, at least the second location vacated by their forces in recent weeks, a Somali security official said.

Security official Abdirisak Moalim Ahmed said Ethiopian soldiers present in El-Ali, Hiran region, as part of an African Union mission withdrew on Tuesday morning after artillery fire targeted their base overnight.Nearby Shabaab militants then reoccupied the town, which lies about 70 kilometres (43 miles) from the provincial capital Beledweyne.

“The Ethiopian troops pulled out of El-Ali town early this morning,” said Ahmed, adding the reason for the withdrawal was unclear.

“They have headed for Beledweyne and the town is already taken by Shabaab militants,” he said.

The troop movement comes just days after Ethiopia’s embattled government declared a state of emergency in a bid to bring an unprecedented wave of protests under control.

El-Ali is at least the second town Ethiopian troops have vacated in recent weeks, after abandoning nearby Moqokori. No explanation has been given by the Ethiopian military while the spokesman for the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) did not respond to requests for comment.

“They continue creating vacuums and giving chances to the militants retake liberated towns,” said Ahmed.

The Al-Qaeda aligned Shabaab militants announced the takeover of El-Ali in a message distributed via the group’s Telegram account.

Most African countries (with an exception of a few) don't have enough helicopters to drop a battalion-size infantry into action. Those who do, have not demonstrated that capacity in recent years. The only times this happened on African soil was when the SADF 32 Battalion would be dropped into battles in Angola and would be quickly extracted back to Namibia within hours. ... As for now, it's just tactical insertions.

Back in the day we used to have an entire air mobile brigade (6 S.A.I, First City Regiment, Prince Alfred's Guard).

They still exist, but I think only 6 S.A.I is fully qualified with only elements of FCR and PAG being qualified.

Anyway, now we could never deploy more than a battalion without stripping helo's from other duties, and the loss of the Super Frelons has greatly reduced capabilities.

We would need 20 Oryx to move an entire battalion in two waves. That leaves only 19 for the rest of the Airforce. Even if you throw in the Augusta's it doesnt change much.

Its sad that we will never get those capabilities back... all I want is Apocalypse Now ride of the Valkyries in the African bush sad sad sad sad

At least 10 dead as army, Ugandan rebels clash in DR Congo

At least 10 people were killed in clashes between the army and suspected Ugandan rebels in east DR Congo, a local activist said Monday, in an area that has suffered a string of massacres since 2014.

The rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces, a partly Islamist armed group of Ugandan origin, are accused of a litany of human rights abuses and being involved with kidnappings and smuggling.“Suspected ADF attacked Beni from the north overnight… Eight civilians were shot dead, a soldier was killed and a suspected ADF militant was also killed,” the local civil society leader, Gilbert Kambale, told AFP.

“The armed forces of the DRC intercepted the ADF and in the exchanges of fire civilians and soldiers were killed,” said the army’s spokesman in the region Mak Hazukay by telephone.

“Workers from Beni town hall are currently transferring the bodies of the suspected ADF (member) and eight other bodies to a large vehicle,” Rossy Mupenda, a motorcycle taxi driver who was assisting with the operation, told AFP.

– Human rights violations –

Various rebel groups operate in the region around the town of Beni, an area plagued by violence fuelled by ethnic rivalry and disputes over the right to exploit local mining and forest resources.

Am I the only person who finds the never ending Nigerian camo patterns confusing... I mean there's a new camouflage pattern every new month THEN to add more confusion, a single platoon or unit can be seen wearing different patterns and an individual soldier can wear a mix (as he seemingly pleases).

CH-53E Super Stallion because it makes funny things happen in my underpants when I look at it.

CH-53K if we had dat Arab money.

Seriously though, second hand Super Stallions. Big payload but without the drawbacks of the Chinhook (its quite unwieldy). Its also cheaper than helicopters that compare more to the Oryx than to heavy lift (NH90 or Super Cougar).

I feel that the Mi-26 would also prove to be unwieldy and cumbersome unless you have nice open planes to deploy on. You need something that is nimble enough to quickly drop into tight LZ's

unfortunately i dont see that happening anytime soon since everything goes through our useless parliament, remember just last june when the budget was read and KDF were given an additional $200mn for 'modernization' one MP later sujjested he would bring a motion to slash that $200m and convert it to the school feeding program which was alocated $40mn. I dont know if he was bieng noble or just looking for popularity, but from his explanation, he completely clearly did not understand the gravity of the security situation especially in north east ..... and areas along the border and how this was negatively affecting all of kenya...

just recently when that Puma crushed ,some kenyans were tweeting that the chopper was made in china!! kenyan's including politicians need to educated what we as a country need and lack.it always irritate me when a politicians assume to be know it all, about issues which are critical to even our survival as a nation.some one whose background is in law ,trying to give an opinion about defence. its just ridiculous ,even the media has the same issues .you see them trying to interview a journalist on issues concern terrorism, the same fellow can't even differentiate an AK-47 and G-3 (because he is a local crime investigative journalist)during the west gate mall terror attack new coverage ,i heard Muhammad (the jicho pevu journalist) describe some weird concocted assault weapons names.i was literally on the floor laughing to death.

Considering the ever growing budget cuts and the looming free tertiary education for all, military spending is likely to suffer. After the Arms Deal, South Africans are bitter about anything called the military.... The Orxy needs a replacement and I hear in less than 10 years. I don't even think we'd be able to buy 30 or so medium lifters as replacement. Sad times

Free education isnt going to happen. Its the Nuclear Deal + Slow Economic Growth multiplied by a weak Rand.

But ja, the Oryx issue keeps me awake at night.

With Zuma at the helm the economy will not recover, so we have to wait until after elections to see what happens. But who knows, if this fees must fall buisness continues long enough* maybe the Government will be forced (maybe only subconsciously) to review military capabilities.

*This is blatantly in the realm of a 3rd force. I am getting strong Arab spring vibes. Ever wonder why our economy got rocked right after we announced the BRICS bank to rival the IMF? Notice how Brazil randomly went down earlier this year (the silent coup)? Notice how their economy hit the tubes right at the same time as ours? Ever wonder how the fvck the EFF (who is supported by the poorest of South Africans) can afford such lavish election campaigns and rallies? Im not usually one for conspiracies, but this sh1t is pilling up so thick and fast that there is definitely something going on, just what I dont know, but something. Probably just home grown agitation from the EFF, but I remember studying South American history at University our story is beginning to be very similar.

Hehehe, the only free thing I support is free Internet so maybe South Africans can Google more often.

As for the Orxy replacement, the French EC725 heli could do the trick. Its a Puma derivative, making it a distant cousin of the Orxy.... I mean this chopper is a newer frame on the market and carries 45% more troops than the Orxy.

Buying it means we're keeping a familiar platform and we could buy less while retaining the same number of troops flown.... Who knows, maybe Denel could do some modifications and we'd have the Orxy MK2.

It just doesn't end, it's a major problem in that SBS unit. They seem to have tons of multiple uniforms in the SBS, if they cannot keep track of them.

It is a major problem. However in a strive to standardise, the military has now come up with 2 types( Desert and Woodland) of camouflage uniforms for officers and men across the 3 services. So you know see Air Force, Army and Navy personnel wearing the same type of Camo. A pattern that we've continued to see recently as the old uniforms are taken out of service.

The problem now seems to come from the Special Forces units. They have a green and their own type of desert cammo. The Navy SBS takes it to a new level, however for the navy they standardise, but their uniforms are at-least 10 different types.

According to what i read, this blue pattern for the SBS is supposed to be the naval version of the general military standardised type of the cammo. It's just a lot of unnecessary confusion.
