Mazi_Omenuko:

I find it amusing that you guys decide to quote a version of the bible that suits your logic. What you quoted up there is an adulterated version of the bible.

The original King James version of Eph 5: 18 states " And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.

Keyword being "where in excess".

Stop quoting Queen Elizabeth version of the bible.
taiocol: No 4 states 'What you need to

wine,

filled with the Spirit. ―
Ephesians 5:18'

Maazi, even without the 'in excess', the above post stil butresses ur point. 'Do not drink' is different from 'Do not get drunk.' I don't work for Nigerian Breweries but pls let's not misquote the bible.

Biblically, The Bible Is Voluminous and Mysterious. Without De Holy Spirit U Can Never Read De Bible & Understand It because Its Complicated & Compound; In Taking Reference To Drinking Of Alcohol. According To My Assertions, I Hate Alcohol & Will Neva Take Part In It No Matter What. PERIOD !!!

on the issue of alcohol consumption the bible is at best contradictory if not confusing.there are verses (see my post above) that prohibit drinking alcohol.there are verses which only speak against drunkenness.there are verses which allow alcohol.and we can also understand that there is a verse which promotes drunkenness (proverbs 31:6-9).

You can drink wine but not to be drunk by it! Being drunk does not cos you to sin against yourself but to the Almighty!
Re: What The Bible Says About Drinking Alcohol (wine) by xtremely9ja: 12:54pm On Aug 11, 2013
lanrexlan: The bible advise christians to drink wine and beer to forget their sorrows.
Proverbs 31:6-7 (NIV)- Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish;let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.
The bible also recommends wine in preference to water.
1 Timothy 5:23 (NIV) -Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
From the first scripture you quoted,I will like to ask; are you perishing or do you want to perish? Are you in anguish or do you want to be in anguish? Then from the second scripture, are you sick or do you want to be sick frequently? Because the scriptures quoted never justifies drinking. Except you are perishing and you are averse to redemption or you are permanently sick and need little for you sickness from time to time.

sseunth: well,to me drinking is not the sin.....geting drunk is the sin

And that is what the Bible says.
QED!

Even under the OT laws, Jews were EXPECTED to convert their farm harvest tithes to money, which could be used to buy alcohol at the place where God is. However the coming and death of Christ has FULFILLED THE law.

The Law of the Tithe
22 Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year. 23 And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always. 24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the Lord thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the Lord thy God hath blessed thee: 25 Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the Lord thy God shall choose: 26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the Lord thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household, 27 And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee. 28 At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates: 29 And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hand which thou doest.

taiocol: We do not need the Bible to be
telling us this, most of us have
tried and tested ways to claim
the same. Alcohol, in whatever
form, has at some point of time
caused us to do things
differently. In the very essence of
it, the Scripture does not
encourage you to sin against
your conscience, thus, forbidding
you from doing anything that will
offend yourself and your fellow
beings, in particular.
Consuming alcohol, on the whole,
is not really condemned but
letting yourself give in to
drunkenness, which will lead to a
loss in sobriety, is definitely
looked down upon. Finally, what
matters is not allowing anything
to overpower the mind and the
body, for that which is
overpowered is enslaved.
Well spoken and so on-point!
No more blabs on this matter pls.

LagosShia:

Then we can summarize the argument with these two verses:

1) 1Corinth 10:23 "All things are lawful to me, but not all things are expedient (beneficial): all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

[For the sake of the liberty in Christ name, the above verse was written by Paul to the Corinthians. Alcohol may not help in edifying your body, but it is not sinful as you you speculated]

2) 1Corinth 10:31 "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."

Do you know why I quoted the 2 verses above, because "For the earth is the Lords and the fulness thereof." (Vs 26 of same chapter).

I think the chapter 10 of 1Corinth, when studied well, will answer most of the controversial questions we ask today.

You are harmering on Proverbs 31:6-7 & 1 Timothy 5:23
The 2 verses NEVER support drinking. If you are looking for bible verse to support your action, sorry none of the 2 support it. here is the analysis.
Oops,do I look like a christian? I said the bible gives christians authority to drink wine in some cases.

1. Proverbs 31:6-7 (NIV)- Give beer to those who are perishing, wine to those who are in anguish;let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.

Here, Proverb said give wine to those PERISHING or in ANGUISH. Are you experiencing any of the two? Then how will you say the bible ask EVERYONE to drink?
You are reading my posts upside down.I am not experiencing any one

2) 1 Timothy 5:23 (NIV) -Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.
He was asked to drink wine for his ILLNESS not pleasure
I know,my religion prohibits beer even for illness.

To really know what the Bible says about drinking, we ought to be clear what it meant by the word wine. Wine, for instance, was the common drink in ancient times, and Biblical scholars are of the view that, the water available for drinking contained pollutants and harmful microbes, which made it unfit for consumption. From what is believed, the alcohol content in wine was needed to kill these microbes, and also to keep ailments and infections at bay.

You analysis is very poor if you think man has lived without drinking water because it was unfit for human consumption. Do you think NAFDAC was around in those days ? If you think slaves were given wine when they were thirsty then you better go have a strong drink and rewrite your post.
