About To Open German Cars Repair Shop by astrofil(m): 5:29am On Jun 07, 2008
I`m a top technician fixing German cars. I work in USA and have 12 years experience  with latest German cars like BMW, MB, Audi, Porsche.
I have state of the art factory diagnostic equipment and all necessary tools and knowledge to work on those cars. A lot of my costumers is from Nigeria. they all say I should go to Nigeria and open the shop fixing German cars because  there is not much mechanics who can fix latest MB or BMW. I thing that`s a good  idea to do it and planning visit Lagos in September to get more detailed info and see the country.
What do you thing about it ?  Which city is the best to open this kind of business?

It certainly sounds like a feasible idea, as you have identified your market already. German cars are quite expensive cars, so your customers won't be just any car owner of the street. Your customers are likely to be wealthy people, who obviously have these expensive cars, and who want their cars to be looked after by a specialist. With this in mind, you may want to think about where these sort of people live. I would suggest corporate parts of Lagos/Abuja - where wealthy, owners-of-flashy-cars live. I think it would be a good idea to go down to these areas and observe for yourself. Spend a day around the areas, see how many BMW, Porsches etc you see on the street - These are the people you want to attract. Also, check the area for competition. Walk into automobile repair centres and see what they do. Are they general car technicians who just fix anything? Or are they specialists in their areas? What are their prices like? Is there a BMW/Porsche dealer in the area? What are their prices like? Do they provide parts? Do you know a better place to source parts? If all is favourable, take another look around and try and select a good location. Are there certain areas in which your services are needed ? Are there available garages? Lastly, this is a new continent you are thinking of moving into. Things are bound to be different, new, strange and exciting. On your trip, you can ascertain whether this is a challenge you really want to take. Do you see yourself living there inthe next 2, 5 , 10 years. Can you adjust to the environment? I'm sure there are more things that need to be considered but these are just off the top of my head. Most of it involved proper research. You can ask questions etc - They are very helpful but nothing beats your own first-hand perception of the whole situation.

I`m looking for somebody who can be trusted and has little bit money to invest and can do logistics and local research. With this kind of person I would even open the business. I already found out to open the business in here I need one Nigerian Citizen and then me as a foreign I can join as the partner.
How about safety issues in Lagos and Abuja? I have heard so much stories about white people being in danger in Nigeria.

is not often true that foriegners are not safe in nigeria, come to think of it am a real estate person in abuja and subsequently i was approached by similar proposal from a prospective investor.

abuja is quit expensive but the the market is also high here.

along the line i met with a nigerian in abuja that wants to invest in similar buiz, may be u can work things out with him as he is ready to invest his funds too.

Dear Astrofil,

Its pleasing you see that international investors, as well as tourists, recognise Nigeria as a viable place to visit and conduct business.

Nigeria is one of the emerging global players, with an abundance of natural resources and highly skilled labour - Mark my word, you have pinpointed a good location to export your technical expertise.

I too have bitten the bullet and made the decision to invest and expand my business interests in Nigeria. I would certainly advise you to visit the country, particularly, Lagos (the commercial centre of Nigeria) as part of your field research. You will find the country challenging, as well as exciting. On the whole, I don't think you will not be disappointed. Remember, every business venture is a challenge, and should also be fun.

I will be travelling to Nigeria around about August/September 2008 - We could meet up for a drink and a chat.

Just saw your thread and was wondering what you have decided.
Coming to invest in Nigeria is challenging, for one, most westerners who have not been to Nigeria will discourage you from going there. Both those who have been lived there hardly want to leave Nigeria.

In the line of business you have identified, you could easily get great patronage in any state capital in Nigeria, but i would advice you to start either in Lagos or Abuja.

With respect to security as a westerner, don't worry about that, as long as you are not going to the Niger Delta, which is 600KM away from lagos and you do not intend to go to the oil industry, you have no problem.

Lagos is like any other world city, even in the US, you wouldn't walk in many cities by 2 AM in the morning.
1 thing you have to arrange before setting up is having reliable spares supply channel.

If you can get OEM spares for the cars you are dealing with, then you will make alot of money in Nigeria.

Lagos, Abuja and PHC are very good for this business.
Smaller regional towns can also be serviced by proper arrangement.
You can also do very well by arranging sales of OEM spares.
Light duty Diesel engine repairs will also be appreciated.
Most importantly , you need to organise training programme for new local apprentices.
I can run your Niger Delta( PHC) outlet as I am PHC based.
