South Africa Launches Africa’s Fastest Train

Africa’s fastest train has opened its new route to the capital, Pretoria, from Johannesburg in a bid to speed up travel between two of South Africa’s major cities. The Gautrain takes less than 30 minutes for the 54km (34 mile) journey. It can take up to two hours to travel this distance by car during rush hour.

The Gautrain’s inaugural airport route was opened just in time for the 2010 World Cup, when it was used by thousands of football fans. But by reaching Pretoria, it is likely to be used by ordinary South African commuters to beat the traffic on one of South Africa’s busiest roads. Hundreds of commuters turned up at Johannesburg’s Rosebank station as early as 05:30 local time (0330GMT) for the train’s first trip to Pretoria.

Transport infrastructure over the next two years is expected to change radically. The train’s top speed is 160 km/h - a long way from the world’s fastest trains but still far superior to the locomotives chugging along most of the rest of the continent’s tracks, which mostly date from the colonial era.

You forgot d Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri Line, whose track laying has been completed. Then, there are d ongoing Abuja and Lagos Metro Lines been built by d FG and LASG respectively, as well as d River State's PH Monorail (pray this one sees d end of its construction). By d way, the Feasibility Studies on remaining Routes on that Proposed Standard Lines (about 10 of them I think) of d 25 year Railway Strategic Plan in d link you pasted above, have already been awarded since last year and are expected to be concluded later this year....... Congratulations SA (this was built since 2010 by d way prior to d World Cup); but Nigeria is also on its way to doing same, and maybe even more...

This Gautrain service has been working since last year, so its not a recent development, and their service is excellent you would just want to be there all day forgetting your final destination.

really...are the rail tracks in Nigeria fast rail tracks..? because that sure doesn't look like a fast rail track in Nigeria, and besides it's not just about building tracks, rail stations (and i don't mean those Kiosk they normally build as bus terminals) are also needed, and i actually dont see any of that yet, so please stop consoling yourself that someday you will get there, we have been saying that exact same words for so long now yet we are still not even 30% there yet.
