I must commend you for your consistency. Its been years and you are still here sharing your thoughts. May God richly reward you. I was recently diagnosed with peptic ulcer (less than a week ago) and the reason is because I am coughing blood. I am worried because I haven't heard of anyone with ulcer cough out blood. Do you mind sharing your thoughts on this?

Hi there. Thanks for your comments.

For Ulcers its very rare that you cough blood. Its more frequent to see brown streaks of blood in the stool than for you to cough it out. How often does it happen? What are your other symptoms?

I dont know how your diagnosis was and what tests were done to detect peptic ulcer but I'd suggest you seek another doctors opinion. If possible a gastroenterologist, who specializes in digestive issues. Just to be sure there are no other underlying issues.

And if its an ulcer for real, then you need to get on treatment to stop d bleeding and prevent infection. I'm guessing the triple therapy treatment or PPIs and antibiotics would be prescribed. Please seek for another medical opinion if possible.

I think this should be the last question from any ulcer Patient

Just tell us what a typical day or two was like for you when you where treating it....

Like What did you eat, how u ate it, and how long did you take the soaked unriped plantain water etc... This little details will really go a long way... Thanks

Hello geekybabe,

Thanks for your contributions thus far. I want you to summarised everything we have been talking about for the benefits of some people here.

1. What is the difference between GERD and ulcer?

2. How are the symptoms of GERD different from Ulcer's?

3. The plantain therapy you mentioned, is it for GERD or ulcer?

4. What is the best solution for GERD?

5. What is the best solutions for Ulcer?

6. Those foods and drinks you listed that we should abstain from, are they for people suffering from GERD or from ulcer?

Thank you

@newgroom

1. What is the difference between GERD and ulcer?
GERD is gastrointestinal reflux disease. A more chronic form of acid reflux /heartburn. It occurs in d chest due to excessive stomach acid flowing up from your stomach into your oesophagus and maybe even up to the throat. This acid flows up your oesophagus because the spinchter that controls the opening from your oesophagus to the stomach is weak and isn't closing properly.. You can read more online.
Stomach ulcers are like sores in the stomach caused due to many things.. Stress, excessive stomach acid, bad eating disorders, and most commonly H. Pylori infection. etc.

2. How are the symptoms of GERD different from Ulcer's?.

GERD symptoms occur in the oesophagus and attimes the throat. You feel d discomfort more in d midchest. A burn, a heaviness, sharp pain that sometimes radiates to the back, behind your breast bone. In throat it can be very confusing because its symptoms are similar with other throat infections. You could get hoarseness in d throat, sore throat that, cough that feels like you have to clear your voice at all times. Yea. The cough usually clears when you get on ppis or those antacids.. Could take a while depending on how chronic d GERD is.

Stomach ulcer symptoms occur in any part of the stomach area depending on d kind of ulcer. Gastric ulcer pain is usually felt just above your navel in the upper abdomen area. It comes with cramping attimes but you feel d discomfort more intensely after eating any of those trigger foods. Duodenal ulcers occur in the small intestinal. The pain is usually intense and not easily diagnosed. Either way, you need a Doc to examine or properly recommend an endoscopy in extreme conditions to know exactly what the issue is.

3.The plantain therapy you mentioned, is it for GERD or ulcer?
This was used for acute gastritis years back. It worked then cause basically its an alkaline solution that helped to reduce the acid levels in the tommy and provide a coating for the ulcers to heal. I used it years back. Not used it in d past 5 years. Rather I've adopted lifestyle changes that work for me without living on PPIs and meds.

4. What is the best solution for GERD?

Healthy eating and lifestyle changes. Cant stress this enough. No fizzle drinks, no hot meals, no citrus and especially no fries. If u indulge for any reason let it be once in a while and have your antacids as backup around to neutralize the effect. Some antacids are not effective for GERD.
Ranitidine works but I heard the NHS as advised that pple should stop using as it causes cancers on the long run. If you keep your stomach acid levels low, eat right, and give your self enough time for food to digest b4 you sleep, you should get better over time. For meds, in my opinion PPIs work best for ulcers and H2 blockers are best suited for GERD. Im not a doc. Read online to understand these differences. Watch YouTube videos as well. Many Gastro doctors provide Indepth explanations with physical illustrations on YouTube.

5. What is the best solutions for Ulcer?
See a doc to get the right prescription for you if its bad and you dont feel well. Especially if you have bleedings and cannot tolerate food. And again, an healthy lifestyle. Dont junk.

6. Those foods and drinks you listed that we should abstain from, are they for people suffering from GERD or from ulcer?
Those foods are drinks you be avoided as much as possible for anyone with either GERD or ulcer. Your Digestive system is all linked. And what you eat goes through the oesophagus first before it gets to the stomach.

I am not a doctor, and most of d things i write here are just from my experiences over the years and research. I've been lucky to also have amazing Doctors as well.

Hope i answered some of your questions in a way.

Hello to all,

This thread has really been helpful.

Sometimes last week, i developed symptoms such as abdominal pain, burning sensation in my throat and stomach, once i eat my stomach makes rumbling noise..at some point i had slight fever which i treated. I went for an Abdominal ultrasound scan and everything came out normal, the sonographer asked me why i opted for a scan, i told her my symptoms....She said the scan shows everything is good but i should consider "H-Pylori test''. I visited the family pharmacist and told him how i was feeling, he prescribed some drugs (Quoflux, sivoflush and albendazole etc).

I started taking the medications and realized that the stomach rumbling has reduced but yesterday night through this morning was a nightmare....The burning sensation in my throat was unbearable, on and off pain in abdomen, slight pain by the breast, weakness, palpitations, discomfort. What i had for dinner before using my drugs that night was Spaghetti with stew and a cold malt.....I had to boil water and add honey which i took in the midnight, that was what made me to sleep for some few hours.

I went online and saw many related symptoms (GERD, H-Pylori, stomach Ulcer etc). My wife is worried and i intend on carrying out a Barium test or Endoscopy as soon as possible. Even as i type, i still feel the burning sensation in my throat....am so scared to eat now.

Can anyone recommend a good center to carry out those tests?

Thanks

Hi there, Just relax. From all indications you have gastritis and GERD. An endoscopy will only reveal the extent of the problem and confirm diagnosis. It doesnt cure the disease. So try to see a Gastroenterology specialist in a specialist hospital for proper diagnosis or referral for an endoscopy. ( thats if you need it). Pharmacists are not specialists in diagnosis.

People live with GERD for years and heal without an endoscopy.

Hello geekybabe. Thanks for putting up a wonderful thread as this.

I have gastric ulcer and it comes with vomiting plus cold. I used Cimetidine-400 last week as well as some drugs but it only relieved me for a while. I noticed gascol or other antacids doesn't work for me. I'm guessing that's why I throw up most times cos the tastes irritates me.

I can't get freshly cut plantain here, can I use the one bought in the market as I won't know when it was cut and again I was told pawpaw works. Do you have an idea how? Thanks.

HelenBee,

If your gastric ulcer is making you vomit, It implies that you can hardly tolerate food and this might not be the best time to take the plantain solution.
The plantain solution is fermented, and causes bloating and diarrhea for some. For you, I suggest to not try it, till the vomiting has stopped and you can at least tolerate meals. What are you eating that triggers this vomiting?

Cimetidine works best for GERD/Acid reflux, and not exactly for gastric ulcer/gastritis. You may want to switch to PPIs like omeprazole (Prilosec), lansoprazole, or rabeprazole, esomeprazole (nexcium) etc., or talk to a doctor for recommendations. These PPIs work differently for people, but omeprazole seems like the most popular. I have taken each of these with different doses at certain points. (20mg twice daily or 30mg once daily)

Dont keep using antibiotics once your H.pylori has healed. Antibiotics make ulcers worse. their continued use worsens the digestive system and Tho doctors recommend the triple therapy treatment, ( usually 2 anitibiotics and 1 PPI), i suggest that you really dont use antibiotics for a prolonged time than recommended. Yes you can take PPIs everyday for 30 days or more, but not antibiotics.

Take your ulcer meds, PPIs, Omeprazole, cimetidine, etc, first thing in the morning before meals. Then eat at least 30 mins or 1 hour afterwards. They are more effective that way. Be gentle with meals. Oats with honey is one of the best things you can do for breakfast. Avoid milk. Please. No matter what anyone tells you, milk and ulcers and not friends. Make sure you dont lie down at least 2-3 hours after a meal. and dont eat heavy. Eat more fish, chicken or turkey than red meat. and of course, rather boil or grill than fry.

Hope my suggestions are helpful.

Great job geekybabe.

I have a question though, I thought honey is acidic, and therefore may not be good for ulcers?

Honey ph is between 3.1 to 7. And most of d honey you get around isn't exactly that acidic. And its not like you are drinking honey like syrup. No. Its just a sweetner that is healthier than sugar.
Mixing honey into your oats, pap or custard should be just fine. Besides honey has some soothing and healing properties that can help your digestion so it is encouraged.

Hi Geekybabe,

I just got my h-pylori results and it came out negative.... Although I still have heartburns which reduces once I use GAVISCON and funny stomach noise (not at all times)..You indicated that it could be GERD.

What drugs do you suggest I use...it has been a long long while I dewormed...Do you think I should use a drug for that? (Deworming)

What drugs will provide a longer relief than GAVISCON?

Thanks for your response

Good thing you dont have h-pylori so at least, there is no need to take unnecessary antibiotics.

Gaviscon reduces symptoms.. and soothes the discomfort of heartburn. Doesnt treat the underlying cause.. I am not a doc, so I wont tell you meds to use or not. Ranitidine and cimetidine (H2 blockers) used to be the recommended drugs but apparently they are being discontinued in most countries as it has been recently discovered that they have cancer causing properties..

You can talk try getting omeprazole (20mg) or any other PPIs recommended by your doc. PPIs can be taken once day before meals.
WIth GERD, adjusting your diet, eating patterns, sleeping posture is the most effective way of getting over it. NO matter what meds you take, lifestyle habits need to follow.

Remember, it is your body. and letting go of discomforting meals only helps you to heal. Avoid fried things, gaseous drinks, and avoid eating heavy. ALso dont take water between meals. Chew your food properly before you swallow. increase your fibre and non-citrus fruit intake (oats, vegetables, cucumber, carrot, bananas). Dont sleep until at least 3 hours after a meal. Keep well.

Yeah. Especially if you are taking antibiotics in your treatment. It could cause delays in your period or shorten your cycle. Depends on how your body responds and the intensity of the antibiotics.

PPIs themselves taken alone without the antibiotics, should not have any adverse effects on your cycle.

Thanks

Please filter the plantain solution before drinking, to avoid diarrhea. You can take anytime you want but Its best taking when the stomach is not so full. These treatments work best on the stomach when they have room and space. best on an empty stomach.

Hello..... Just found this thread and I'm really happy, I've been suffering ulcer for three months now and at a point I felt I was being bewitched...... I feel a burning sensation from my waist down to my feet and most times only on my feet.blurred vision has been my new normal now and I get frustrated by the day not until two days back when a doctor prescribed omeprazole and chlaritromicine that gave me relief, I've also tried that plantain and water stuff and it only brought relief for some days before I went back to square one again....did scan few days ago and everything came out pretty normal but said I had gas in my stomach....... Please I need more suggestions on how to be healthy again...... Thanks
