This is investigative journalism gone to the dogs, I can't believe that Sowore (owner of Sahara Reporters), a guy I loved so much during his student unionism activities in UniLag and other campuses had gone so desperate just to become relevant!

awodman:
The Presidency has denied reports that the President
Goodluck Jonathan, who is in New York to attend the
United Nations General Assembly is in the United States
with a 600-man delegation.

In a statement signed by Reuben Abati, the Special
Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, the
Presidency said Jonathan arrived New York with “less
than 30 persons as members of his entourage.”

The statement went further to assert that “There is also
no substance to the rehashed charge of profligacy
which SaharaReporters annually makes against the
President when he leads Nigeria’s delegation to the UN
General Assembly.”

Read the full statement below:

We have noted with regret the continuation today by
SaharaReporters.com of its usual scurrilous and
baseless attacks on the Jonathan Administration with
publication of a false claim that the President is leading
a 600-man delegation to the 68th Session of the United
Nations General Assembly in New York.

While we trust that discerning members of the public
who are already very familiar with SaharaReporters’
usual fare of mischief, outright falsehood and erroneous
speculation will rightly dismiss this latest claim as a
fresh manifestation of the online medium’s ill-will
towards President Jonathan and his administration, we
wish to affirm for the benefit of the unwary that there is
absolutely no truth in the allegation that the President
took a 600-man delegation to New York.

There is also no substance to the rehashed charge of
profligacy which SaharaReporters annually makes
against the President when he leads Nigeria’s
delegation to the UN General Assembly.

The truth is that less than 30 persons arrived in New
York with the President this morning as members of his
entourage. Other than them, the only other persons
who are in New York for the UN General Assembly with
the President’s knowledge and approval are relevant
ministers and few essential aides.

President Jonathan’s official delegation is definitely not
out of proportion with Nigeria’s size, role and relevance
in Africa and the global community.

SaharReporters’ claim that the President’s delegation is
the largest at this year’s General Assembly is an
unjustifiable fabrication which can never stand any
rigorous test of truthfulness.

We are certainly aware that many Nigerian citizens are
currently on visits to New York. These persons are here
for their own purposes and neither President Jonathan
nor his administration has any responsibility for the
presence of these persons in New York.

We will not be surprised if it is such persons who
include Nigerian businessmen who are here for an
African Business Roundtable event, members of non-
governmental organizations and tourists that
SaharaReporters has been counting, for the sole
purpose of mischief-making, as “members of the
Nigerian delegation”.

You guys should chill. If I know a ministry that's sending at least 15 delegates to this same UN general assembly. And they are also part of the president's delegate.

Though I had my reservations about the story the above quotation in Abati's refutation made me have a rethink. Africa business roundtable, is this not the same Bamanga Tukur's Africa business roundtable group?

Abati has indirectly confirmed SR story.
What i understand from the denial:
GEJ's official delegation is 30
There are other ministers and essential aides who are there on GEJ's approval. (maybe about 200)
"There are other businessmen, Ngo members and tourists.
Certainly every other person who travelled with them will be lumped under the last group because they actually have no business in the UNGA but sight seeing.

That $10,000 a night hotel-room is not to expensive for a seating president. A poor bottom like me has paid $2,000 per night for two days before not to make mention of Nigerian president. The delegation is too large though.

Sahara Reporters had already made up her mind to criticize the President's Delegation to New York, so even when they had no official statistics of entourage members, they cooked up statistics just to criticize. Their website is very boring these days, so they have to lie to make news.

Fat shame to all blind opposition and critics. Y'all should learn from Putin.

Haha, Abati has confirmed it...see foolishness.
We all know when Govt gives a figure, just add another zero to have actual figure.
Hence 30 = 300
few essential aides = 300
Total = 600.
SR has done it again...exposing the wicked and clueless Govt!

Eventhough SR sometimes manufacture things, the figure might not be too far from the actual number of people. When Sambo came to Canada earlier this year, he came with close to 400 people in the guise of business summit.
I am sure we all know it is almost impossible for the delegation to be less than 30.

HAH: Anyone who says this is not possible have obviously never been close to how our government is being run.

Exactly!

Nigerians are so ignorant.

I do not know if the delegation was more or less than 600 but what I do know for a fact is that there arent just 2 Governors in town, there are currently at least 6.

If Nigerians know how much is being wasted of their future, they'll carry arms and run around in the streets. Its very clear that Government insiders just come on forums like this to read and gauge the temperament of the dummies they rule over--- but never comment (Duh?!), while the know-it-alls and rabid supporters are constantly posting because of the crumbs they receive.
