Rossikk: Let them move to Ghana. When they charge them there or their profits reduce due to low patronage, they can then move to Liberia, Sierra Leone or Togo. Worthless idio.ts.

I'm afraid I'm with the airlines on this one. what's with the numerous charges? I thought we should be doing more to attract more airlines as it will translate to more jobs in the sector and healthy competition, not drive them away with additional charges. Pls, NCAA shpuld reconsider this one.

Abeg let them go o. Maybe when they leave, all of us including our politicians will see the need for them to fix our bad roads. But then, corruption could increase because of the need to buy private jets.

Re: Nigeria Airline Operators Threaten To Move To Ghana by adanny01(m): 10:31am On Sep 27, 2013
I see 2 reasons why the airline's threat is valid.

1. The customer is to directly bear the weight of whatever charge hurled at them. Which means tickets will be more expensive and less affordable to Nigerians. Also less customers for the airlines.

2. A considerable portion of their profits will be used to pay these charges.

In the end, the charges are directly for Nigerians.

With lots of neanderthals now on nairaland for different purposes i am not surprised reading all these. The government is not helping with these policies. Our flights are already among the most expensive in the world due to charges and taxes. You can confirm this by booking a flight and seeing the break down of the fare. Why should a 45 mins flight cost as much as 25k or more, its ridiculous and 60% of this is from the charges. If the government wants to frustrate Nigerians from investing then they should go ahead and keep bringing in the Khans and Mongols. Some day we would begin to think about how much government has helped us and not making policies to derail business people who would end up cascading the tax to us. The issue is not about Ghana...dats d focus of most of the comments here typical of Nigerians (always ignoring the facts and making decisions based on ties and impulse).

since_1914: I think they should restrict these new charges to only Private Jets because theirs is a luxury service and they can afford to pay to keep enjoying that service no matter what. I think Commercial Airlines should be exempted since they are offering an essential service. That said, I think it is irresponsible for the operators to threaten to relocate to Ghana. If they can't find a more diplomatic way of resolving this, they should just relocate quietly, instead of making a show of it. They must also bear in mind that they will be loosing at least 70 percent of their current business by doing so.

They do not intend to move to Ghana. They are just just registering their protestations publicly so that when ticket prices go up, patrons will understand why. We will be the ones ultimately paying for the increase in their overheads.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has imposed a new fee of $4, 000 on foreign registered and $300, 000 on Nigerian carriers per trip.

Yeye journalism.

How can Nigerian carriers pay 300,000 dollars and foreign carriers pay 4,000?

I think the real figure is 300,000 Naira, and the editor(s) was/were too lazy to review.

Not surprised though. undecided

NB: I don't support this policy.

FlyinNaija: Aviation in Nigeria is a big joke. There is no clear policy and those in charge have no clue on how to move the industry forward.

The Cost of doing business in Nigeria is prohibitive. That is why Nigerians pay some of the highest fares in the world. The ignorant are quick to blame the foreign airlines of racism and exploitation , but the blame lies with ridiculous policies like these. I am amazed by most of the daft comments made on this thread; guess who is going to pay for these fees? The passengers/ public, you dullards!
Nigeria has an aviation industry that is still in the infant stage, what is needed are policies that will boost the industry. How is this policy going to help our struggling airlines?

The "private jets" as the laymen call them are a source of income to the federal government. Majority of these jet are "business jets" owned by corporations and operated under strict budgets. It is not easy to own and operate these jets. Nigeria has the second fastest growing business aviation sector in the world. Instead of the government to encourage development, they consistently introduce new policies that make it harder and more expensive to operate. There has been a remarkable slow down in development in the business jet sector under the current minister. I score her 1/10 with regards to the business aviation sector. She was the laughing stock of the gallery at a recent interaction business aviation event. Majority of her policies are targeted at her political enemies.

Shut UP you rat!!! angry

Who are you to call Nigerians stupid and dullards....just because they were sincerely expressing their displeasure of being exploited by the government and to a very large extent; the airline operators?
Are you afraid of loosing your job to Ghanaians, captain?

Listen very carefully, Nigerians are very aware that their government have indirectly exploited them through a few of their aviation policies over the years. But most of those policies are not different from what you will find in Europe, North America and most part oof Asia where the aviation sector ii is up to per. Why are passengers from these places not suffering untold hardship like their counterparts in Nigeria?

Just like the exploitation in the communication industry by thee operators, the airline operators in Nigeria is to be blamed for the problems and hardship passengers are facing. At least for the most part.
Problem is just like every business operator in Nigeria...they have so gotten used to relaxed and non-progressive policies where they operate almost for FREE!

As I encourage the government to relax some of the policies that could slow down business in the Aviation sector, I also stand by them as they implement the necessary policies devoid of corruption and man know man as can be seen in other countries where aviation business is thriving and the passengers happy.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Odua when she's speaking. She comes ff as too lazy and nonchalant. She's not an orator like most of her predecesors. This may have been the reason why you claimed she was laughed at in a recent gallery.

Fortunately for her, her actions and policies speak otherwise. She could pass for the best aviation minister has ever had. Unlike former aviation ministers who foolishly take pride in telling Nigerian how witches have taken over our airspace, she tackles issues and problems with action.

Also bear in mind that her job is not to make aviation policies, but to oversee the smooth implementation of such policies by professionals.
Less I forget, do well by naming her presummed enemies in the aviation sector?

And for those threatening to relocate to Ghana...please by all means do so. MTN made such threat 2 years ago. We are still waiting!

I think it is more business for the road transport services as commuters will begin to opt for alternatives.

Prices of air fare are bound to jump up to cover cost and ultimately, the final consumers bears the brunt.

There is no better time for strategic planning to traveling than now as any impromptu air travel may not be welcomed.
Re: Nigeria Airline Operators Threaten To Move To Ghana by 735i(m): 11:09am On Sep 27, 2013
The responses i have read so far is really saddening. Are we actually sure we want to watch them leave? Because when they leave; the few that will be left come at our throats with blunt razors cos they naturally have to transfer overhead costs. It will mean less Nigerians being able to afford air travel as tickets will become more expensive. The alternative is; Road.
As with the simple law of demand and supply; the road transporters will increase their fares when their services are in higher demand....So it's possible that a trip that previously cost say; N4,000.00 might go up to N7,000.00.....of course if you can't afford it there is the option of trekking...

Again i ask; these extra charges; what will they be used for?
Why can't Nigeria start it's own airline and run it like a business and see if it will survive with all these charges?
Why can't we be sensible for once?

And let nobody tell me it will be used for development....cos i am sure that there is a sharing formula (amongst the "polithiefcians"wink for SURE-P funds..i haven't seen any reasonable project executed with that fund!!!

are you for sure they will lose 70%?how did you arrive at that figure?

I doubt that t because, and you probably know this, that NY is about the same size as Nigeria, and Nigeria/Ghana by flight (from any part of Nigeria) is not a long trip by any stretch of the imagination....

Can you please explain the bolded?
What facilities have NCAA put in place to make the operations of these airlines easier? I will assume that you have traveled to the western world before...or at least to Dubai...Do you know that Emirates can hold the government responsible for a breach of contract and even sue them? So if the government imposes charges; Emirates might just consider the value they are getting before they start throwing tantrums....
I can just imagine power outage in Emirates for 10 minutes; They'll sue the government into debt!!!
Can the same be said to be true in Nigeria? I mean...this is all logical...if you must impose charges; make it justifiable....
And for those of us talking about the increase in tariff in Ghana; have you made findings? What are the reasons for the increase in tariff? Or you expect me to believe it's all random increment?

Are you for real or talking out your azz as usual. Ghana is about to be aviation hub for west Africa.

Thousands of air travellers were, yesterday, stranded in Lagos and other airports across the country, following
scarcity of Jet A1 commonly known as aviation fuel, crippling flight operations
in most parts of the country.
Investigation made by a source revealed that the scarcity started on Monday, forcing some of the airlines to either
delay, cancel or merge their flight operations.
At the time of this report, no reason has been given for the scarcity. It was gathered that Aero Contractor Airline went as far as Kaduna on Monday to purchase the product and
before returning to Lagos to airlift passengers.
In Lagos, hundreds of passengers were stranded at the Murtala Muhammed
Airport Two, MMA2, and the General Aviation Terminal, GAT, as they could not secure flights to their destinations.
Our source gathered that some of the aircraft, which departed Lagos, could not return to base because of lack of fuel.
It was gathered that some foreign
airlines were heading to
Accra, Ghana
to source for fuel since they were finding it difficult to get it in
Nigeria.
An operator who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “for the past two days,
domestic airlines have been grappling with the challenge of scarcity of JET A1, which might worsen in the days ahead.” According to him, the scarcity of aviation fuel was affecting major flights
in and out of the Abuja Airport.
When contacted, Managing Director of IRS Airlines, Mr. Yemi Dada, confirmed
the scarcity of the product and called on independent fuel marketers to make it
available in order not to impact negatively on the operations of domestic
airlines.
According to him: “I can confirm to you that aviation fuel is scarce and it could
impact negatively on airline operations, if the scarcity persists. Though the price
has not increased, the product is not available.
“For now, aviation fuel sells for between N160 and N180 per litre. We are appealing to the fuel marketers to make the product available.”
