kindly amend the title of this post to "Kwara State: Fulani, Yoruba and the National Conference" . I believe this will attract more people, hopefully the intellectuals, so we can have more meaningful debate on this very important issue

Ilorin and other major parts of kwara has always been part of yorubaland

However Afonja who was over ambitious rebelled against the High king(Alaafin Oyo).

At the time the Yoruba dealt with slaves and we owned a lot of fulani slaves, and their camp was in ilorin.

Afonja an Illorin born Yoruba wished to get independence from Oyo, he trusted his Fulani friend(Alimi), and using the army under Uthman danfodio He pushed Oyo southwards and released Ilorin from all Oyo influence.

Alimi betrayed Afonja, and murdered him.

Alimi now ruler of Ilorin and commander of the Sokoto army waged war against Oyo, Oyo suffered so much until Ibadan came to help.

Ibadan and Oyo army were able to push back the fulanis but unable to reclaim Ilorin's rulership

That's the history

You need to go back to your history books. Ilorin is a yoruba land and Afonja the founder of ilorin was the 1st Aare Ona Kakanfo of yoruba land. MKO Abiola was the last Aare Ona ka kan fo. Its not just like any other title its reserved for only distinguish and very powerful yoruba indegines (warriors).

Afonja isn't the 1st Aare Ona-Kankanfo

Kokoro of Iwoye was the first

And Afonja's grandfather was the founder of Ilorin
Ile-Erin meaning home of Elephants was a hunting ground for Afonja's grandfather who was originally from Oyo. He was very rich on Elephant hide and tusks and established Ilorin

Kwara state is not just about Ilorin.Taken that Ilorin has an Emir what about all other settlements in kwara, do they alos have Emir? The creation of Kwara and combining Yoruba in Kogi was a political fraud by government. The Emir that Alimi left was half Yoruba half Fulani and now that they marry Yoruba they are more Yoruba than Fulani and no issue with that.
The history of ilorin is different. From other towns and if a referendum is held today kwara and Yoruba Kogi will be in a Yoruba mega state.

theSpark: Am not yoruba but let me chook mouth. Illorin people are just fulani by name, it is their town yes, they won it in war. It is only normal that they rule the town. They emir of Illorin is more yoruba than fulani, i dont see the need for a yoruba oba. It will just cause discord.

Kwara is geographically in the north, its based on geography that its in the North Central. Tribal sentiments are usually not followed when making such delineations. By the way, yoruba people as Northerners makes the country stronger.

You suggestion on 5 regions does not fly. It will cause more tribalism, and power struggle. Let it be made that states that want to unite should unite, those that dnt want should stay.

Which war was this? Please provide proper details.

The Ilorin Emirate is a traditional state based on the city of Ilorin in Kwara State, Nigeria. It is considered to be one of the Banza Bakwai, or copy-cats of the Hausa Kingdoms.

At the start of the 19th century Ilorin was a border town in the northeast of the Oyo Empire, with a mainly Yoruba population but with many Hausa-Fulani immigrants or slaves. It was the headquarters of an Oyo General, Afonja, who rebelled against the empire and helped bring about its collapse with the assistance of the Fulani. The rebellion was powered by Hausa, Nupe and Bornu Moslem slaves. Afonja had been assisted by Salih Janta, also called Shehu Alimi, a leader of the local Fulani. In 1824 Afonja was assassinated and Alimi's son Abdusalami became Emir. Ilorin became an emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate.

For some time Ilorin was a major center of the slave trade. In the past slaves had mainly been sent north across the Sahara, but now they were being sent south via the Yoruba lands to the coast to supply demand from the USA, the West Indies and Brazil. Slaves were taken from the Igbo lands to the east and from conquered Yoruba towns, as well as from areas further to the north, and were traded for cloth and other goods. Ilorin continued to expand southward until it was checked in the 1830s by the growing power of Ibadan, an Oyo successor state. The Ilorin cavalry were ineffective in the jungle to the south, and by the 1850s Ibadan had access to guns from European traders on the coast.
