It's fact Yoruba kept fulani slaves, Ilorin was their camp, their duty was to tend to the Calvary and serve the Oyo warriors.

Afonja had quarrels with Alaafin Aole who asked him to attack his mother's town, Afonja refused and then the Alaafin asked him to attack Apomu(a community in Ile-Ife) this was to be an abomination for anybody to attack Ile-Ife. Afonja got angry and wanted nothing to do with the Alaafin who seemed to know nothing about Traditions, he wished to gain independence for Ilorin and rule as the Oba of Ilorin. He got help from his friend Alimi the commander of Sokoto army but he was murdered and Alimi wanted to conquer some part of Yorubaland which Ibadan didn't allow.

Ibadan were the victors of that war

The Origin inhabitants of Ilorin are Yorubas, the fulani there are descendants of slaves owned by the Yoruba

macof: Ilorin and other major parts of kwara has always been part of yorubaland

However Afonja who was over ambitious rebelled against the High king(Alaafin Oyo).

At the time the Yoruba dealt with slaves and we owned a lot of fulani slaves, and their camp was in ilorin.

Afonja an Illorin born Yoruba wished to get independence from Oyo, he trusted his Fulani friend(Alimi), and using the army under Uthman danfodio He pushed Oyo southwards and released Ilorin from all Oyo influence.

Alimi betrayed Afonja, and murdered him.

Alimi now ruler of Ilorin and commander of the Sokoto army waged war against Oyo, Oyo suffered so much until Ibadan came to help.

Ibadan and Oyo army were able to push back the fulanis but unable to reclaim Ilorin's rulership

That's the history

Just some corrections - the slaves were Hausa and were called gobirawa.
Afonja's army consisted of Hausa slaves - Alimi had no army. He was just a muslim teacher. After the death of Alaafin Aole, Afonja with the Opele of Gbogun stopped paying tributes to the new Alaafin, Adebo
It was actually Abdulsalam, Alimi's son, who killed Afonja and invited the flag of the Caliphate from Gwandu
The Army which sacked Oyo was overwhelmingly Afonja's army together with Solagberu's army from Oke Suna.

You are right that Ibadan did stop the Fulani at Osogbo but the Ibadan soon became embroiled in internecine wars with the Egbas and other groups and were unable to reclaim Ilorin.

Thanks kats.....your knowledge is quite vast. Respect

But going forward, what do you think will happen regarding the title and what strategies can be deployed to regain rulership of Ilorin for the Yorubas?

Am suprise the Afenifere and other yoruba groups are not saying anything. But I know something for sure -should nigeria disintergrate then kwara central and kwara South will definately join the southern part. The Sarakis of this world won't be able to do anything about that.

The town was actually Iwere and it was fortified by nature; so conquering it was almost impossible. The King set Afonja the task of conquering it in 3 months or dying. But Aole had made many enemies at this point, so they all joined Afonja and laid seige on Oyo, forcing Aole to place a curse on the Yoruba race before committing suicide.

And Iwere was Alaafin Ajagbo's mother's place.

The people of Ilorin and Kwara in general should decide where they want to be. Afterall, Ketu, Popo and other Yoruba towns are in Benin republic. If the Kwara want to join up with the North, then why not?

In any case, the emirs of Ilorin are more Yoruba than Fulani. The emir is only fulani in title.

you don't know anything about kwara.

I am nt here to fight with ibos, but this thread has nothing to do with you guys
Anywhere u see "Yoruba" you always feel interested but the annoying thing is that instead of you to act maturely and comment what you know you make a fool of yourself by commenting rubbish in a bid to tribalise against Yoruba.

Kwara state is a big state- part of Nupe(called tapa by Yoruba) and Yorubaland is present in kwara state.

Ilorin is the only place that has a non-Yoruba ruler, offa and so many other Yoruba Towns in kwara have Yoruba rulers.

so many igbomina Towns under Ila Orangun are in Kwara state, they have nothing to do with ilorin.

So if you are too dumb to tell the difference between "ilorin-a town" and "kwara-a state" you should just prevent yourself from showing your illiteracy.

I don't think so.
The Emir of Ilorin is more of a Fulani than Yoruba. He is a Northern puppet and when the time comes we will hack any resistance to Yoruba supremacy in Ilorin to pieces.

Who is this Enegito, how can someone be so mannerless, @ Op nice work am learning a lot, permit me to chip in something, one of my coursemates from Kwara, Mohammed by name, always insists his fulani despite the fact that he can speak yoruba fluently, the funniest part is that he even resembles one physically....so i think the first step is to look for a means to enlighten the kwara people on thier yoruba roots and on the need to appreciate and be proud of thier roots.

How German is the queen of England? Trust me, you can't rule in isolation. Sooner or later, you assimilate completely the culture and practices of people you live with. The emir's first language is Yoruba, interacts daily with Yoruba people. What Fulani influence is in Ilorin today?

Any solution to the solution must be decided by the Kwara people. Do you want traitors at the gateway to your land? If you force kwara people to join you when they prefer to be with the Hausa-Fulani, aren't you giving yourself an Achilles heel?

. That's the 1 million dollar question here. I have never heard the Alaafin (who has a direct link with the founder of ilorin), Ooni and other top yoruba Obas. Imagine this scenerio, about 3 years ago, Northern Student Union was formed in OAU and majority of the members were yoruba kwaran mostly christians this caused serious jittery in the camp of the core Northern students and they made a request that the posts of president, VP and gen second should be restricted to core Northern students.
Ofcourse we didn't grant their request and the group was desolved. The group was to be formed because somebody (one of the core Northern students) made Gov Babangida Aliyu believe there was Northern Student Union in OAU and the guy immediately donated N500000 to the group and promised to make subsequent donations). The group was dissolved but I learnt they are still working on reforming/rebranding the group with aanother name (Arewa Student Association) and we all know an Adegbola Samson from kwara state would not be allowed to join such group so kwara students are really suffering because we can't even apply for Oduduwa scholarships as only South West Students are allowed to.

The OP told a lot of lies like saying the Nupes all speak Yoruba. I served in Kwara state, a Nupe speaking part and most of them can't say a single word in Yoruba.

Yorubas get ready for war if you want to reclaim Kwara.
Re: Proposed National Conference: A Case For Kwara State by lertee(f): 8:49pm On Oct 19, 2013
By origin,by history nd by descendant, the emir or ilorin isn't yoruba and has no yoruba trace.
The empire is only yoruba socially since all parts of ilorin speak yoruba as a language but nothing in their culture relates to yoruba.
Until the “idi apes” begin to rule, then ilorin still belongs to the fulanis.

The emir of ilorin might be a descendant of Alimi but his ancestry as been mixed with more Yoruba.

He is living in yorubaland, he speaks Yoruba better than any language

He as Yoruba names

All ilorin, both original Yoruba and the descendants of the slave fulanis are more Yoruba than any other than.

Benin is ruled by a descendant of Oranmiyan, why is nobody claiming the Benin are slaves to Yoruba?

Ilaje is ruled by Yoruba, still some people try to distinguish them and call them Ijaw.

Why is no fulani even arguing this case?
Why ibos who have no business?

Instead of u to face ur eggnog group you poke nose into Yoruba affairs all the time

. I didn't say they speak yoruba fluently. Sincerely I have never been to kwara to kwara North but all my secondary school mates from there speaks yoruba sparingly and I was made to understand that yoruba language is quite popular there ofcourse after there native language. Also I watch Governitorial campaigns of Gbemi Saraki on tour of Kwara North and she was speaking yoruba to them without an interpreter in some cases.
