Satelite imagery give us a tool for estimating populations we never had before. It is simplistic to think that the estimates are derived from simply looking at the picture with the naked eye and making deductions from there.
Many types of imaging such as heat signature are used and other factors such as water bodies and distance to the sea of also used in the estimates.
The census figures in Nigeria go against every known law of demographics. This is well known in international circles so i don't think we need to argue about how fraaudulent our censii (is that word legal grin) and elections are

@afeni
Deluded foaming-at-the-mouth fanatics like u keep talking about how the brithish gave power to the North in 1957 so they could oppress the south. Read your history before u start spreading myths on nairaland. Power got into the hands of the notherners when Nnamdi Azikwe decided to form a coalition woth the northern block instead of forming one with his bitter enemy Awolowo. He was quoted to have said that even though he knew the wets-east coaliton would have formed a functional government, he decided against it because of personal differences. So if u will blame anybody blame him

@Hero

For goodness sakes, the houses in those pics are not made from tin. They have bricks, Unlike a lot of wooden houses in the US.

Please, for your information, most houses in Nigeria are brick houses with tin(or similar) roofs. Your brains will fry out in a tin house, better a house from palm leaves than a house with tin.

You don't know more about living in nigeria than my humble self grin

You needed sattelite photos to know the census is false?

wow lmao.

Demographic statistics on most African nations, from the CIA (which lacks such info at all for certain nations) to African governments is ALL WRONG. Hell even in the US I just read an article TODAY in the Washington Post stating Mayor WIlliams had the Census Beurea add another 30,000 civilians to its roster for Washington DC due to "anomalies". Statistics is based on models and equations that APPROXIMATE and is only as good as the data you have to work with. When the data from African countries is less than adequate ofcourse you get wrong demographical info.

If even the US goes through "anomalies" with its census data, and they have some of the best staticians in the world, wtf do you expect from Nigeria?

And it doesnt matter wether you all think the country should be one or not. Regular folks like yall do not determine this. They never have. Nigeria will split up, its enevitable. It is like saying Saudi Arabia is going to continue to be a peaceful country. With imperialists countries like the US still on the lose with belligerent foreign policies the next civil war is just around the corner, the CIA already "predicted" in a report they put out a couple of years ago. When the CIA is making such predictions you can bet they are doing things behind the scenes to ensure the predictions becomes reality.

though not doubting the population of lagos,i would like to point to some of you that lagos is a city-state. those satelite pictures showed kano city in kano state, asaba in delta state, makurdi in benue state, enugu city in enugu state e.t.c but the whole state of lagos was shown as a city(being a city-state).besides some of us make the mistake that there are only southerners in lagos. the south might be more populated in terms of people staying there and the north more populated in terms of people from there(vice-versa). since there was no tribe in the last census,we will never know the truth. satellite pictures mean nothing!

Cut from another site, I visited,

There is a plan by the Northern part of Nigeria to rigged the 2007 election, With the event in Abuja yesterday when some unfaithful Nigerian were asking the federal govt to shift the result of the 2006 census, , This people have no good for Nigeria, they want us to return back to the old census figure,, which we at nigeriaONE.com have been able to prove that the 1991 census figure were faked, with satellite picture, Honestly why the fear by the Gowon group(in Minna meeting IBB, Atiku, Buhari, Gowon, Awoniyi, Abdusalami 2 weeks ago). What did they discuss at this meeting? , is this not the plan at the meeting to shift the census result so that the next incoming govt would declear a fake result, What honestly is Prof Iwu upto, ? Why do prof Iwu and his Northern friends want to shift the census result, its because of the fact we all know the truth,

What is an election if the fake 1991 census figure would still be used to delimite the constituencies and decided the polling boots,
where in the world do electoral bodies use fake census figure to allot polling boots, Gowons and his friends have questions to answer. Why honestly do they want to rig the election, ??
What tension are they talking about, ?? we wish to inform them that Nigerian have seen the satellite picture of Nigeria, and agreed that the 1991 census was faked, so the tension left when the picture were out, Nigerian already know the obvious, so there is no tension,

If you recall this same Gowon conducted a fake census figure too in 1973 , and the satellite Pictures also shows that Gowons 1973 census figure were fake, Is Gowon trying to defend his 1973 census figures Why do Gowon want us to use the fake 1991 census result , is it that so that the north can win the election 2007, Is that the truth, if so Gowons and his friend from minna should be arrested, for trying to push a fake census figure on Nigerians.

Why Honestly is the show of lack of trust for President Obasanjo and Alhaji Makama by the Gowon group and Prof Iwu.
We advice President Obasanjo and Alhaji Makama to stand for the truth and honestly declear the census figure so that INEC can use the result for its work, If President Obasanjo and Alhaji Makama do otherwise by delaying the census figure then it shows that they were part of the plan to rigged the census figure, that 2006 census figure would also go in the history books as fake,

INEC Conference Seeks Delay of Census Result
•Calls for 10-year ban on electoral offenders
From Kola Ologbondiyan
Stakeholders in the nation’s electoral process yesterday rose from a three-day national forum in Abuja and called on the Federal Government to delay the release of the 2006 population census, saying it will reduce tension and provide a favourable atmosphere for the conduct of the 2007 general elections.
The stakeholders felt that the census figures, which might eventually affect the delimitation of constituencies and allotment of polling boots might become controversial and consequently raise temper in the land.
This, reasoned participants at the forum put together by INEC, might have adverse consequences on the conduct of the general election, as a violent protest of the figure could distrupt the elction.
The forum also urged government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to use the office of Inter-party Relations at the Presidency to convene an all-political party summit that would produce a code of conduct for politicians.
Reviewing the impact of fraud on the integrity of electoral processes, participants asked for a 10-year ban on electoral offenders, saying this would deter unruly politicians who might want to short-circuit electoral rules to attain power.
The participants also demanded for a limit on the operations of the election tribunals in a manner that no public officer should be sworn in until his case has been disposed off from the courts.
“A situation where petitions over the last elections are still pending six months to the next election truncates the process and undermines the benefits of electoral choice,” the forum in its closing statement presented by the New Nigerian Managing Director, Mr. Ndannusa Alao, on behalf of other rapporteurs.
Participants observed that the enactment in the 2006 Electoral Act of a provision that pegs the maximum amount which an individual can contribute to political parties at N1 million will open the political space to parties and candidates who would otherwise have been constrained by paucity of funds.
“The forum noted the firm assurance and pledge by the INEC to be impartial as well as its innovative measures to ensure the elimination of the problem of logistics which has marred elections in the past,” stressing that unless trust and confidence are rebuilt among stakeholders, “the 2007 elections may be held in an environment of suspicion, mistrust and apathy.”
Urging INEC and security agencies to adopt a zero-tolerance policy on violence, it advised INEC to void results in areas where violence is identified to have occurred, among others.
Meanwhile, former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), yesterday assured Nigerians that with the determination expressed by the INEC, the electoral body would deliver on the 2007 polls.
Gowon, who chaired the closing session of INEC’s National Forum, said the commission’s Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu, is also confident about delivering on next year’s election.
According to Gowon, “with the determination of the chairman, what they (INEC) require is our support and encouragement to ensure a successful delivering in 2007 so that our democracy will thrive.
“Our roles as Nigerians, irrespective of parties or groups, is to give support to INEC so that they can do what we expect to do in respect of elections and do it well,” the former head of state advised.
Recalling his encounter with former President Shehu Shagari, Gowon revealed that the former president satisfaction with the level of preparation espoused by the commission.
In his closing remarks, Iwu said the members of the commission do not have all the answers to the myriad of electoral problems plaguing the polity and urged Nigerians who are prepared to provide such assistance to come forward.
“Also, if you have genuine cases against our officers, who are holding sensitive positions, and these cases are backed with facts, let us know. We will not sack or dismiss them but we would save the commission from embarrassments.
Iwu stressed the need for the commission to hold another forum after the registration of voters exercise “and have the last forum a week before the election. So that whatever happened, let it be our election.
“Let’s work together to deliver a credible election in 2007. Let us also have this thing done at the zonal levels so that whatever we do in INEC will be a result of what we think is the best for Nigeria and not for any segment or group of Nigerians.

What is the point here? How can yo judge the population of a country by merely looking at the satellite images and the size of the landmass? I don't understand! South Africa in landmass is bigger than Nigeria, but that doesnt make it bigger in Nigeria in terms of population. So, the imageries posted here doesnt relate to the numerical population in any form.

Can someone tell me how satellite imageries are used in determining the population apart from using it as a guide to see where is inhabited or not?
Re: Satellite Pictures Of Nigeria Cities( Fraud Population) by PeeDaVinci: 3:29pm On Jan 03, 2007
Dont be dumb with those satellite pictures, the scale of the pictures is not there, so you cant actually compare one area with another area, because from what i saw, it is obvious that the satellite imageries of the different areas are at diffrent scales, hence there is no basis for comparison.
Also, the issue of variation of population density of one place to another also account for a great deal of changes satellite imagery can never account for.
Satellite imagery is at best good for approximation, which is at times erroneous,
So, don't just jump into conclusion based on very little unsubstansiated facts, population census goes beyond satellite imagery/remote sensing.
Dont get me wrong, anyway, as I'm not suporting the NPC because nigeria's population census is full of shit

This Census controversy in my opinion is a bit early and unnecessary, yes we know in the past there might have been manipulations but can we all wait for the official census results to be published.

In addition we are aware of the advantages of satelite images but please note it has its limitations. The propangandist of this satelite image on Nairaland "nigeriaone" in my opinion is an "uninformed individual" i advise all to be cautious when visiting his sight. I intentionally refused to visit his sight becos he has been trying hard to advertise the site using the Narialand forum.

In another thread nigeriaone has started using satelite images to make predictions that Akure is more populated that Onitsha and other such statements which i believe we should wait for the Population results. He claims to be in government or close to government in another thread i think the one on the gas project, his statements suggest one that takes ethnic positions.

While my intention is not to attack nigeriaone i am concerned that we let every issue divide us, no matter what the census results are somebody somewhere will feel marginalised. We need to move forward as a nation particularly our generation lets avoid the traps that caught our parents, religion, tribalism and such tools such as Census, yes it will affect revenue distribution but if everyone in the polity has one agenda a better Nigeria and not a better region or state we could overcome this "minor" issues used to divide us.

The satelite images would definately help to interprete the census results when release and show clear cases of fraud but please note it has its limitations, that is why the NPC and the govt in their wisdom decided to conduct a Census, they could have well used the satelite pictures to predict the population figures.
