I do not condone corruption but the way and manner Sahara Reporters made a scape goat of Stella Oduah without showing much proof of her direct involvement on its own was a suspect. Immediately, other APC propagandist media like PUNCH, Nation etc picked it up and made it headline story for close to seven days without much investigation except the rumours and gossips they gather from social media.

The opposition finally airs its views on this issue...

Oduahgate: Don’t Use Politics To Justify Corruption, APC warns…TMG Demands Aviation Minister’s Sack

October 24, 2013

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned against any attempt by the unimaginative spin doctors of the Aviation Ministry to use politics as a cover for the egregious corruption scandal surrounding the illegal purchase of two armoured cars for the Minister of Aviation.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Thursday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said it is most unconscionable for anyone to blame the supposed opposition to President Jonathan’s re-election in 2015 as the reason for the widespread outcry against the monumental corruption and abuse of office engendered by the scandal.

It said that the opposition, in particular, should not be blamed for the justifiable indignation of most Nigerians to the corruption scandal, as Yakubu Dati, who goes by the nebulous title of ‘coordinating Spokesperson for the Aviation Ministry’ (don’t blame him. After all there is a coordinating Minister of the Economy, a title unknown to the Constitution) tried to do in his winding postulation on the scandal.

”What Dati and his co-spin doctors tried to do is to play on President Jonathan’s insecurity as far as 2015 elections are concerned. This is very insulting not only to Nigerians but also to President Jonathan himself, and it will not sell. After all, attempts to blame the opposition for the lingering ASUU strike has also failed. In any case, what is the business of a public servant, who is supposed to be apolitical, about whether a President is re-elected or not?

”We in the APC have not joined the fray over the Oduahgate scandal since it broke out because we thought this was a straightforward case of corruption and abuse of office that should be summarily dealt with. But President Jonathan has again failed to live up to expectation, thus allowing all manners of clowns to seek to pull the wool over the eyes of Nigerians in the name of defending the indefensible,” APC said.

The party wondered why President Jonathan will engage in a diversionary and exculpatory strategy of setting up a panel to investigate the scandal, when there are statutory bodies that are supposed to do so.

”There is precedence on how to handle such a matter. In case President Jonathan has forgotten, his then boss, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, sacked Adenike Grange and Gabriel Aduku, Minister of Health and Minister of State for Health respectively, for spending part of the ministry’s unspent budget. The Permanent Secretary and other top officials of the ministry were also suspended when the issue broke out. No panel was set up before this action was taken.

”While many may argue that President Jonathan is only following ‘due process’ in dealing with the issue, we counter that he is only seeking to buy time while hoping that the issue will die down. The composition of the panel set up by the President itself supports our stand. It is doubtful if any of the members will act against what they perceive to be the ‘interest’ of the President on the issue,” it said.

Meanwhile, APC has condemned in strong terms the arrest of Mr. Dino Melaye and other protesters against the Oduahgate scandal in Abuja, saying the police, by their action, have signalled that they will protect corrupt public officials.

The party said the reasons given by the police, obstruction of traffic and disturbance of public peace, were apparently cooked up to justify their shameful act.

”The Nigeria Police must learn to operate in accordance with the best practices around the world. Elsewhere, the police will offer protection to peaceful protests, the type that Mr. Melaye led in Abuja, and ensure that their protests are not hijacked by hoodlums, like the hired pro-Oduah protesters who reportedly attacked those protesting against corruption and abuse of office.

”This is not what is expected of a police force that is maintained with taxpayers fund, and all those involved in harassing and arresting the anti-corruption protesters must bow their heads in shame,” APC said
In the same vein, the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has expressed shock “at the shameful and embarrassing transaction and acquisition of two BMW 760LI armoured cars for the Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) at an outrageous and ridiculous cost of N255 million.”

The group in a statement today signed by its Chairman Comrade IbrahimM. Zikirullahi and publicity secretary Chief Eddy Ezurike, said ”It is even more shocking that at a time like this when Nigerian people are calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to sanction the Minister as a deterrent to others, Mr. President is not only romancing and massaging the car scandal, but found it comfortable to make Stella Oduah a leading member of his entourage to Israel on pilgrimage. Therefore, TMG is not at all surprise at the rash of response by the Minister to the purported “query” issued to her by the President. Given our governance system, It may well be the person issuing the query is the same person providing answers.

“ In a decent society where value system is not relegated to the background, both the Minister and Director General of NCAA should have been suspended from their positions to enable unfettered and uninhibited investigation. However, from the response of the aviation Minister, it is palpable clear that relevant documents concerning the purchase of ludicrous BMW armored cars may have been destroyed and evidence invented to justify the unjustifiable.

“ This action to say the least, contradicts the anti-corruption posture of President Goodluck Jonathan government. It is intolerable and deceitful for a Ministry struggling to overcome endless air mishaps on account of poor funding and mismanagement to be engaged in such frivolous transactions and financial misdemeanor.

“Thus it appears that as we approach the 2015 General Elections, the ruling class has device means of primitive acquisition of money and protective security with the sole purpose of rigging and buying votes at elections. TMG is strongly persuaded that the action of NCAA is not an isolated one, but a further manifestation of the rots and institutional wastes in the Nigerian governance system even as it regards the gifts of BMW armored cars as gratification. For us in TMG, we take the purchase of the BMW cars as preparation towards political campaign of the aviation Minister. This is one bitter truth that Stella Oduah and her Ministry of Aviation have failed to tell Nigeria. Today Nigeria economy continue to stagnate and the social crisis has continued to deepen

“Therefore, TMG urge the anti-corruption agencies to quickly step in to investigate this financial and executive recklessness at the aviation sector. With the said huge sum of N255 million carefully plugged back into Aviation industry, Nigeria may well have prepared to overcome many more years of nightmarish air mishaps.

“TMG believes that the best option for the Minister and others who planned and executed this obnoxious transaction is to resign without further delay and stop the waste of our scarce resources.”

she could as well have bought a private jet following due process. If using that much money (tax payers money) to purchase a car is in line with due process, then it is wrong.

questions you failed to answer are;
(1) Was there any specific budgetary provision for
those vehicles?
(2) Is it true that two amoured vehicles were
purchased for N255M under your watch? ( This is
even assuming that the vehicles were not bought
for u), and
(3) In a country where poverty reigns in highest
magnitude, is it morally justified to buy two cars for
N255M, purposely for conveying VIP( of any
mankind)?

And did we all not come together on this same forum to castigate Farouk Lawan while that scandal raged? Did we not do the same with Bode George and Dimeji Bankole? Did most of us on this forum not rejoice when Ibori was jailed in the Uk? Did we not show our displeasure at the pardon giving to Alameisigha? Did the majority of people on Nairaland keep quiet then?

So, now we should keep quiet because the said lady is our sister from the east? Now it is bias and tribalism, right? SMH.

If you were smarter than monkey, the answer to your #1 question would have been easily obtained from the OMB of federal government of Nigeria. The entity could only speak if you worth its time and if the budget was itemized too.
What is the big deal if the two BMW cars are procured at N255M?

Please my question is : how
many of these armored vehicles
were bought for Prof. Dora
Akinyuli during her tenure as
NAFDAC BOSS when she was
almost assassinated and had
several threats on her life?
Whose job is more challenging
and life-threatening among the
two of them?
I guess the threat on Oduah's life
was "class A" threat , hence the
need for what has now become
world's most expensive armored
vehicle (hopefully it can shield all
those catapult remotely sent
from our villages too).

The Yoruba will not see Fani Kayode that self confessed to filling all available positions with unqualified people, as long as they are yoruba.

They cooked up all sorts of story against the aviation minister simply because she is Igbo. All their evil plans will fail again as usual. If Igbos were as petty and wicked as yorubas, they would have been investigating all the procurements made by the roundly incompetent yoruba ministers. But Igbos are in a superior class of their own and will not descend into the gutter with those yoruba bigots. Shameless, useless people.

There is no reason why agency in the aviation sector should possess a bullet proof car. If the minister felf her liefe was at stake, she should have reported it as so. The only reason why 'specialised equipment' should include armoured cars is if its normal for airplanes to crash land on avaiation staff convoys grin grin grin
