airsaylongcon: Comrades (Pardon the pun),
It is good to see everyone trying to give this thread a kick in the butt and get it going once again. Now we must know what it feels like to be in the Big brother house when the show is approaching the finale with the camaraderie gone and everyone just hanging around. Now we must act as a unit and push over the line. Truth be told, I am over the specified age by a couple of years but I swear down I am ready to dig in and fight with all my might. I may have deprived someone who is within the age limit and equally qualified but remember when "If you are good, you are good"was trending? I am not good but STRONGLY believe in practise practise practise; for this is the only way a boxer keeps his reflexes razor sharp.

So I beseech you all to chip in a little bit on how we can all make our AC. I have got an ebook "How to Succeed at an Assessment Centre" published by Kogan Page. If you are interested quote me. I will respond to all requests by 1700hrs today 11/08/2014. Requests beyond this date wont be answered o! Also @majekdom2, @sqlmaster and other top dawgs....me I am not good o so assistance is necessary

You are right on so many silent followers and new usernames. I can remember the great people that worked very hard to maintain this thread by contributing positively and sharing great ideas. Where were all these silent followers? Were they siphoning information without contributing? Did they come out of their shells because no one was contributing effectively? Chaiiiiiiii, the silent followers have taken over this thread from most of the people that laboured for this thread. What a life. There may be an atom of truth in what @mcpat said that most of the people that got NLNG job in 2007 were not active members.

Great point! It's plain selfish when all these silent observers don't contribute. We aren't competing against ourselves at this point. So everyone needs to chip in a little

Has anyone here been at an Assessment Centre before? I have attended one for a bank. The experience was eye opening as I wasn't even expecting what I was confronted with. So can we share our experiences?

I was on a one on one chat with PrinceofParis on effective group work at the AC and his advice was very good. He said and I quote "But which ever group one belongs, the basic teamwork abilities should play". This goes out to all the NLNG Nland hopefuls; whichever group we find ourselves, lets cooperate and make the best performance. God will crown our efforts with success.

Nice. Can you highlight what these "teamwork abilities" are (or should be) so we can have a discussion rolling on the thread.

Edit: Here's a list I found on the internet

1. Listening: I listen to my teams ideas and use their ideas to help get new ideas (piggy-backing).
2. Questioning: I ask questions of my team to help them figure out what to do and to extend their thinking.
3. Persuading: I exchange ideas, defend my ideas and try to explain my thinking to my team.
4. Respecting: I respect the opinions in my team. I offer encouragement and support for new ideas and efforts.
5. Helping: I help my team by offering my assistance.
6. Sharing: I share with my team. I make sure I share my ideas and thinking. I share the jobs.
7. Participating: I contribute to the team assignment. I am actively involved with the work.

Mine was erm shall we say eye popping. I arrived the venue a whole hour ahead of the scheduled time to meet peeps who had been there two hours before me!! (No work in the country o). Stupid thing is that I was forming James Bond super serious not mingling and all. So for a whole hour I just sat pressing my phone when I should have been getting social with the competition. Anyway, we got called in at the scheduled time and the assessors introduced themselves and the business to us. We were about 12 (two people didn't turn up) and we all sat on the chair that bore our name tags. Everybody nack suit o! I even did small research and nack the bank's colours as tie (you go fear to match). Anyway I hear it's always safest to wear a red tie on white shirt as this suggests that the wearer is hardworking.

Our first task was an ice-breaking activity

I have been a silent follower but not entirely silent as I drop in chips there n then. Just like someone already said, its definitely not FAIR.
However, my intentions are not dark cos its based on my being new in nairaland, in fact I didn't heed to dplacements advice as for d WAEC test cos I never took info on nairaland serious.
And also due to hard schedules, most guys here r usually ahead of me as per info cos d only shl material I used for preparation was from shl.com.
I'm saying all these cos it is wrong n wicked to "siphon" from others n not give'em in return n that isn't "teamworking".
Regardless of d rationale presented here by me, its still not OK.
Though I googled AC but I'm yet to get satisfactory materials as my busy schedule hasn't let me study, but already some guys here are smart to have some already. Same happened during shl cos d contributions I saw here gave me d shivers that I can't make it with these smart chaps around but here I am AC bound by GOD's special grace as I'm sure I know not much n deserves it not.
Thanx y'all.

Okay, so I've been at an AC before. The main advice is going to be concerning the group activity. Most important is that you avoid unhealthy competition. From what I understand from my experience, you are not necessarily competing against one another in your AC batch as it is possible for all of you in your batch to be successful, or none of you if you mess up the teamwork through unhealthy competition. It helps a lot to elect a good group leader. If you aim to do much contributing to the substance of the group assignment then leadership of the group probably isn't for you as it would look like you are personally hijacking or "commandeering" the whole group assignment. It is for people who will contribute less but are better at coordinating. Just like being the speaker of a parliament.
