Oniru Estate In Victoria-Island Under-Curfew For Oro Festival by Afolabs101: 11:58am On Nov 01, 2013 |
These notices were put up all over the estate after palace security drove around last Sunday announcing the upcoming Oro Festival. Residents have been informed that from between the hours of 10pm and 4am they are to remain in their houses "in their own best interest". No outside lights, all windows must be shut, curtains closed, no generators, no noise, no peeping! This is 2013 and Oniru Estate is prime real estate in Lagos, how is this possible?? Didn't Fashola say that people holding these traditional festivals should not hinder people of other religions from going about their business?? Can any other religious body enforce a no movement order because they are doing their special prayers 1 Like |

What if someone has a medical emergency and needs to go to hospital, also some people like bankers are still working by 9-10pm. And anyway, whats wrong with being out at 10 or 11pm? 6 Likes |

asha 80: comply or go back to your village.Dont mind him. Later when they deport them back to there village they would start screaming victimisation. I dont know why they find it difficult to respect the culture of their host. moreso what would a responsible individual be doing outdoors during the hours of 10pm and 4am, the said time the oro rituals would be performed |

Any body renting an accomodation in the Island,I'm sure the agents/landlord would inform him or her before hand if they observe Oro within the vicinity. Ikate,Ajiran and some places observe theirs every ten days. You cannot come to someone's house and ask him to stop his culture or religious inclinations. If it doesnt suit you, simply don't go there or park out. 14 Likes |

Is this not the joke of the century? Imagine the audacity of these silly bàstards! So, after forking out not less than N60m to buy an overpriced property in Oniru, one clown that calls himself Oba, who has ZERO constitutional recognition or authority whatsoever, and into whose pocket most of the millions I paid would enter, would suddenly have the audacity to "direct" me to stay indoors in my best interest? Not even plead, not even request, but DIRECT? Imagine the arrogant language, like say dem dash me free land or free house. Are you mad? Too bad I am not a resident of that water-logged estate. I would have certainly exercised my full rights as a law-abiding night crawler, and then see how these buffoons would react to that. Arrant nonsense. 22 Likes |

Zet72: When the civilized people are talking a savage & cretin like u is expected to keep shut,In the Arab world, Sallah festivities go on for 10 days. Public holiday stretches that long. During the month of Ramadan, most restaurants close and those that don't must put blinds on their windows so those who are eating inside cannot be seen from the outside. Public eating is banned and clubbing/partying are curbed by the government. The countries who do this include Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman etc. All countries with trade advances and are moving up in development without anyone going to tell them they are backward. Everyone have been warned a week before the time and told the necessary steps. If you have an urgent medical need, they will always allow you pass. The reason for shutting everywhere down is so that no one sees what they should not see and start saying someone put a hex/curse on them but if you want to defy it, they won't charge you to court or arrest you. Just dare it and you might find what you are looking for 17 Likes |

they are quite nice to have informed residents before hand. they even issued a written notice. that is quite impressive. in other communities, people do not know till the very morning or much later in that day. that way, it is easy for the oro people to get a 'sacrifical lamb' 5 Likes |

Ikate,Ajiran and some places observe theirs every ten days. Residents/landlords were not told about this before a week ago. I believe this is even the first time they have restricted movement because of Oro (correct me if I'm wrong). But no one is going to their house to tell them not to celebrate but then they are coming to us and forcing us to stay indoors, windows locked, curtains closed, no lights, no gens etc for a week. I just don't agree with the fact that you are restricting movement, when we have a constitution and laws. The Oniru family sold most of the land in the estate, these lands are owned (through lease hold of 99 years) by individuals and rented by individuals. So on what authority is the family restricting movement?? 4 Likes |

ifyalways: Well, if that is the case, then no problem, since it takes lawful effect as an enforceable agreement. If the residents willfully agree to such an arrangement prior to taking up residency, then they are obliged to respect the agreement. I was concerned with the legality of such a 'curfew' that is apparently not backed by law. Then again, as a proud Igbo man, that arrogant language "directed" pain me small, ontop my own property wey cost me small fortune? Haba. Sisterly advice taken |

ifyalways: No one informed anyone before they paid because this no movement thing started this year. In previous years they would just go about their rituals, prayers etc without bothering anyone. It seems they now want to start taking it seriously. But as a Christian, I will be far away for the duration of that week. I can't be sleeping at night and right outside my window they're offering sacrifices to the "gods" 1 Like |

Afolabs101:Did you just move in to Oniru Did you sublet or rented directly from a landlord and/or an agent? Please check your agreement paper again. Landlords inform propective tenants before payment . . .unless you met a dubious one. Like I said,I think Oniru belongs to those who observe their own Oro once a year, others do once every ten days or so. Sorry if you're just knowing, there's little or nothing you can do now than to stay safe. If strong head carry you come outside them jam you,you are O.Y.O. 1 Like 1 Share |

Afolabs101:Dude, the roads belong to the government and not the traditionalists. They have distributed fliers and asked that you stay away. If you wanna to disregard it, do so. You can get in your Benz AMG and ride slowly around that area at 2am. Have fun but do not complain if there is an end result 4 Likes |
