Spiral Rope – this can also be used as a strap for a beaded purse.


You will need two different colors of seed beads.

Size 11o seed bead color A (CA) for the core
Size 11o seed bead color B (CB) for the outside
Size D beading or Nymo thread. You can also substitute a very thin fishing line (monofilament) which you are able to thread on a needle.

I am using size 11o, but you can use any size as long as they are the same. Once you have mastered the technique, you can use different sizes for the core and outside.

1. Cut out two arm spans of the thread (or as much as you can comfortably work with, without it getting tangled). Thread onto your needle.

2. Use a bigger bead (red bead shown in the picture) as a stopper bead to prevent your work from slipping off the thread. Make sure you leave a tail of about 12” (you will use this to attach your finding/clasp)

3. Pick up four Color A (CA), and then three Color B (CB). Bring all seven beads down to the stopper bead

4. Go back through the four CA beads

5. Pick up one CA and three CB beads. Bring the beads down to your work.

6. Go through three of the CA beads that were already in your work PLUS the last CA bead you added in Step 5. You could also pick up the beads, don’t bring it down the thread yet, using your needle go through the last three core beads (CA), then bring the beads down to your work AND then go through the CA bead that you last picked up.

7. After every set of beads you add, “push” the outside beads to the side, so you can see the core beads to work on. After a while, a spiral of outside beads will be visible going around the core beads.

8. Continue working until you get to your desired length.

9. To finish, sew the thread tightly through your clasp several times to make sure it is secure. Weave the thread back into your work and tie two or three knots along the way and cut off any excess thread.

10. Repeat Step 9 to attach the clasp on the other end using the 12” tail you had in Step 2.

You can make thick ropes using bigger sized beads, but you will have to use thicker thread to ensure the chain does not break.

You can also vary the design of the outside beads by using different colors or sizes.

Be creative and post your samples/finished work...

Here is a 3-strand spiral rope necklace that I made a long time ago. The core and outside bead colors have been reversed. This stitch works up very fast...
