Supporters of Sen. Saraki become first violators – and victims – of new police order

It was not business as usual for supporters of former governor of Kwara state, Bukola Saraki, as their normal routine of assembling at the airport to welcome him whenever he returns to Ilorin after a trip outside the state was disrupted at about 1pm on Saturday as police officers from the Kwara state command prevented them from gaining access to the airport.

This is reportedly based on the recent pronouncement by the police authorities in Nigeria placing a ban on every form of political, socio-cultural and religious gatherings within and around airport premises, in a bid to further improve security of lives, properties and infrastructure at Nigerian airports.

Supporters of the Kwara state Senator appear to be the first victims of the new order. The clampdown was spearheaded by the Kwara state police Commissioner, Mr Agboola Oshodi-Glover.

Also affected were local entertainers, Pele and Igi Jegede who were on ground as usual to add glamour to the welcome ceremonies.

The supporters were allegedly displeased with the actions of the police officers, with many of them refusing to leave the airport until the policemen threatened to use teargas on them.
