Why Do Igbo Kids Ignore Elders? by Nobody: 6:28pm On Nov 11, 2013
We used to have Igbo tenants and there's this particular family, they have 6 children. 14, 12, 10, 7, 5, 3 respectively.

I swear this children, were so stu-pid, and they lacked manners. They'd come to our apartment, they'd not knock, entered without greeting anybody including my dad, mum and sister.

Sometimes, I'd send them out, ask them to knock and greet. I'd also scold them but their parents would take it to the head..

Not this family alone, I've seen a lot of them, they lack respect. Unlike yoruba kids, they are going to greet you even more than once..

I'm not a tribalist, we are all one. I just wanna know why they behave like that..

Some people with poor understanding will take the post personal. Well, as the saying goes, "one man's meat is another man's poison" I think it is "civilisation" that has currupted the general Nigerian culture

I think the issue is with their parents not the tribe, I've lived with some igbo and they greet people well.
Believe me,there are lot of disrespectful children out there irrespective of their tribe, I have an aunty that will fight you if you scold her children for not greeting you!
However no tribe can compare with Yoruba when it comes to greeting !

Is it me or do I sense that you already know why?
I understand watchu mean though. There were some fellas in my hood back then that I called 'bros' cause they were 3-5 years my seniors. Meaniwilly, they had younger ones (that I'm well older than) who 'slammed' names on them and the younger ones 'll be like "our papa no name dem 'bros'". They're even bemused at the too much respect a Yoruba guy like me shows. Tis a culture/upbringing thingy jare

I have seen Igbos who are respectful and some who are not. Same with other tribes.

It is all about upbringing

Igbo kids do not ignore elders unless they are ill-trained undecided
stop the generalization.
They just do not fall over themselves trying to impress the elders with flamboyant greeting styles... It's our cultural belief that every male is equal the only difference being the time of birth but that young men should acknowledge the elderly and those in power because they have a lot to learn from them... A handshake with a slightly bowed head is customary unless you are greeting a royalty then one goes down on a bended knee preferably the right knee.
Which one be bros again or uncle or aunty that one no follow at all o! once we are in the same age grade (5-7years age difference) it's on first name basis otherwise ; sir/madam is used. shikena.. don't blame us, it's our culture and we love it cheesy

What does it profit you to be greeted every now and then by kids? Those kids were not well brought up as respect for elder is an all African thing. I must however admit that Igbos and their neighbouring groups do not greet as much as groups in the West and North.

At least, you should knock someone else's door before entering.. I blame their parents

A lil drift from kids to adults.

After greetings what next??

The Yorubas love ostentatious greetings wenever they see their seniors even if its just 5yrs difference, and then u will be of the notion that they have unalloyed respect for him/her.
Yet, ive seen them carry out those exuberant greetings only for them to talk bad and/or jibe the person when he/she walks past..

If sum1 has wrongly offended you and acted in an improper manner towards you,its natural your grievance wuldnt let you greet him but not with yorubas, they will still greet and abuse later.

What then are we talkn abt if not hypocritical cultural showoff.

Not that I'm taking this personal.
Coming from a Yoruba man, I know that it will look offensive the way those kids greet casually.
I'm an evidence of circumstance. I lost favour before a father of one of my female friends then during the year of my youth service because of my way of greeting.
I was like "good afternoon sir" with heads looking straight at his face. The man walked me out immediately from his house. grin
As in, he took that very serious.

I don't favour tribalism, but let's call a Spade a spade. In terms of kids respecting their elders the igbo(easterner) kids have the least training or perhaps the least respect compared to other tribes.

I don't know if it is civilisation or the culture.

@op you are wrong there...a lot of Igbo kids greet their elders, especially the ones in the village..it has nothing to do with tribe per se cos a i have to always remind the children of a yoruba friend of mine to say hi to me..

..concerning the Igbo village thing,am usually taken aback at the way children greet random older strangers they pass by which is not something i am used to to be honest...

...the only difference is that they do not do all the kneeling down and lying flat on the floor like yorubas do,which is more of a cultural thing...but royalties are given a special kind of greeting though..

I'm not talking about the village, I haven't been there. But, MOST I've seen here in the city are disrespectful. #NoOffence. All I need is an Igbo kid to prove me wrong. Which I haven't seen till now. smiley
