This may come as a shocker to most of you, but Obasanjo has a better reputation and pedigree in world politics compare to Nelson Mandela. Only that one has more media attention than the other.

Respect and cherish what you have.

All we have in nigeria are opposites of mandela who are seeking for second term in office.madiba after spending 29 years in prison came to power and spent just less than 5 years and he never went back to contest.

Re: Can We Have Someone Like Nelson Mandela In Nigeria? by Olacharles: 8:45pm On Dec 06, 2013
Never! Because of ethnicity and tribalism people from other region will never consider any one outside there region as a great leader so great leader in Nigeria of today can only be limited to his/her region or ethnic group.

Yes, The like of Zik and Awolowo were his better. Do you know that Mandela was in Nigeria for some time during the Great Struggle before his imprisonment. He was lectured and tutored by Zik and Awolowo a fact He admitted himself.
Nigeria is not yet a Nation, so we can not have an accepted National Figure,

The Ibo's had Azikiwe and Ojukwu
The Yoruba's Awolowo
Fulani Ahmadu Bello
Edo's Ambrose Alli and Enahoro
Hausa Aminu Kano
These are just some in the league or even better than The Great Mandela, but since we are yet to be a Nation: Tribalism, religious bigotry, hypocrisy, hate and unneccessary chest beating will never allow Nigeria to have an Accepted National Figure like Mandela. Until We Become A Nation.

Mandela did not seek second term because of his age.

@OP

You can not have Mandela in any other African countries because of the absence of apartheid. If a character such as Mandela had struggled for political equality in Nigeria, nobody would have regarded him talk less mentioned his name.

It must be recall that Azikiwe hid Mandela in Lagos for months before Mandela decided to go back to South Africa. It is unfortunate it takes Europeans or Europeans among Africans in order to validate the socio-politico-economic astuteness of Africans. It really sucks.

Tribalism seems to be a convient answer for Nigeria's problems...even more so than consumerism/materialism, ignorance and corruption. And the problem of this so-called tribalism has never been tackled adequately - how many other countries have a history of tribal disharmony from the get go like Nigeria? If they exist, don't they have the same issues? Our colonizers took advantage of this disharmony to serve their own interests. Has the disharmony been rectified or just swept under the carpet? And we're surprised it still exists? One man tells another man or a group of people, "don't be tribalistic!" and what, the problem is just meant to disappear?? Is that how problems are solved in the real world? You are fighting with your partner and then you say to him/her, "stop doing that" - do the issues miraculously disappear?

The dynamics of SA and Nigeria are different. Apartheid might have been a great uniter amongst the black people of SA; why fight another tribe when both of you have a bigger enemy that is trying to deal with you both?

We need better solutions in Nigeria, possibly intellectual ones, because for all this talk about forgetting about what tribe a person comes from, I do not think English is the answer. Failing that, we need more people to be politically-savvy and fight the numerous injustices that exist. It's too easier to fall into a "if I can chop after you, everything is okay " mentality.
