Dada-Stephen: OAU as at 2010 was N20,000 acceptance fee, about N2000 for school fees, and about N3500 for accommodation for freshers Acceptance used to be just N2,000 but was increased 200% in 2010. Stallites is just around N6000 for school fees, OAU should be the cheapest in Nigeria. No tuition fees. Bro tertiary education in Nigeria is cheap o, I have not been to universities in other countries but I can say we get way more than we pay for. Quality of education is good, environment is just perfect, we even get constant 22hrs electricity in OAU, and everyother thing you'd need except for feeding. 1 Like |

For me University Education is almost free in Nigeria (ie public universities), i do not know of any other country where students pay less money than Nigerian Public Universities are taking. Even the private Universities are not as expensive as some people are making it to look like if you compare their fees with what is obtainable else where... Running a University is not a child's play hence its almost impossible for any government to give free university education to its people... What the government need to do is to make fund (loan) available for students and grant autonomy to the universities. Almost all the countries that practice the above system are doing better than Nigeria educationally and their citizens are not complaining of high fees because they have access to loan. 3 Likes |

Vivly: University of calabar 38,000-41,000 Na my units be that ooo. In my days it used to be free and feeding at the main cafe was subsidized that it was near free too. Caution deposit was like N20K and was refunded upon graduation and clearance. I have however noticed from the trend that university education at least in the public schools are dirty cheap. The costs I am seeing are generally lower than what students pay per term in private secondary and in some instances private primary schools. I got a coupla cousins I am paying for so I do know. My submission is that cost is relatively low for public unis . As for the fundamental objectives, I hope we know that that chapter is non justiciable. |

Delta state univ, Acceptance is 10k, school fees is btw 25 to 27k for sciences. Then from 200l, you begin to pay 20 to 24k. Some faculties even pay less. NB: Non indigene pays extra 15k. 1 Like |

Chomzy19: when I said looking for admission I wasn't referring to u, I was refering to any so-called person your post is going to help cos I thought it was going in that direction, now I see the direction u are going, I'll let u know that Education In Nigeria is Cheap, wch country exactly are you comparing it to to call it Expensive? is it Ghana, or Malaysia or Education-giant countries like US, Canada, d Uk, Australia, Germany even France where the Government subsidizes Education, D public universities are still 10 times higher than Nigerian public Universities, Education Is Never Cheap, for now it is still VERY CHEAP in Nigeria becus most Nigerian universities are still substandard, D government cannot do Everything for us, Be4 our Universities get to the level we are clamouring for then u'll see d meaning of Education being Expensive, Half of d federal universities don't Even take up to 50k as their tuition fees, n most states is between 100-200k while d schools u are aiming to be like people spend up to 500-1mil in a years tuition fee. Nigerians want it all, CHEAP SOUND EDUCATION is an OXYMORONI am sure an average person(financially) in dose countries u listed can send 2 children to d university without problem but here we are where workers cant get #20,000 minimum fee and acceptance fee alone is like #40,000 in some universities, what d hell are u talking about? lastmessenger: No you are very wrong my friend. There was never a time Finland had free tertiary education for all. They had Free University scholarship for their top high school graduates and free international scholarship for foreign top high school graduates, which my friend Olatunde was a beneficiary. They still have those scholarships if you wish to apply but note that it has become more rigorous as you have to pass their entrance exam first before your application goes to the next level for screening. We cannot afford that system now with the rate of corruption in our WAEC and NECO. Until we fix the decay in our education system from the grassroots and learn to support the Govt as patriotic Nigerians, our education system will continue to decline. For Nigeria tertiary education to improve, the Universities must increase the tuition fee to a flexible standard that benefits both the students and the university. To run a University cost a lot of money, and the Govt cannot afford it, hence our Universities are in a state of ruin. Govt must also take their hands off school business and allow it run on its own IGR. The only part i'll hold the Govt. responsible is if they fail to provide access to educational loans for students who are entitled to it and wish to get a university degree. That is what you should be fighting for, access to educational loans and not free education. That doesn't happen anywhere in the world. Nigerians must understand that you get what you pay for and education is not free anywhere in the world. 2 Likes |

Dont compare Nigeria to other countries. i dnt know the minimum wage established over there buh i'm sure as hell it aint as low as 18k bn given here. Goddamn it, some ppl are even takin up jobs of 5k per month just to make ends meet and tell me how the heck they are gonna be able to afford a tertiary education for their wards. The govt are not givin us anythin yet they are askin for too much in return, too way fuckin much. A lecturer of mine once said if every workers were to be living solely on their income there would have been a revolution. 2 Likes |

Re: Tuition Fees Of Public Universities In Nigeria by Nobody: 7:25pm On Dec 14, 2013 |
Steve, are you a socialist or communist by any chance? This priority for free Education is not sustainable. We have lecturers who are teaching the same repetition, with no research and this is simply cause nobody is pushing them Their pay are guaranteed by the government. Students are not even inclined to demand better value for their money since the bulk of university funding is coming from government. Further, actually researching lecturers are politically schemed out, the system is not dependent on their ideas. The death of ideas is further transmitted to the poor graduands, which is why actually useful business start ups are very few in our economy, apart from people trading or finding ingenious ways of stealing from govt. At the moment, all public universities are funded by Govt. based on quarterly subventions, which begs the question of what the Universities are doing with the fees? In the case of UNN, one VC woke up one morning and decided to paint the whole place green white and green. Their is accounting, but no accountability because the service is not paid for by the clients. Higher institutions should be accountable to the students, the only way to achieve that is for their funding to be dependent on the satisfaction of the student clients. Costly Meaningful education is way better than cheap false education. Talk of mechanical engineers who cannot produce the simplest car parts and walk around unemployed. Or civil engineers who sit and watch us rebuild roads every rainy season. I believe the right direction to move in is to guarantee a student loan for every citizen, as well as wean higher education of Govt. direct funding. The bulk of govt. funding should be in form of research grants with specified achievement targets and should be competed for. Free education should be limited to primary education if at all desired. But even at primary school, I prefer a community managed school system, where govt. funding or grant is directed at helping communities at the smallest levels manage their education, rather than a blanket decision that the problem is tuition. Let me also add that you need to see how even the worlds best Universities fight and work hard to get funding, hence take their research and relationships with the industries very seriously. Education is not just about passing exams, the true aim is to prepare the next generation of ideas and thinkers. 1 Like |
