A mass wedding was conducted on Thursday December 19th, 2013 for 1,100 widows and divorcees in Nigeria’s Kano state as part of a general drive to discourage promiscuity in the mainly Muslim state.It will be the fourth such set of mass marriage in Kano in recent years.

PM News report that the exercise was the fourth in the series of mass weddings conducted by the state government since 2011. A total of 100 couples wedded in the first batch, while 250 couples wedded in the second batch and 1,000 wedded in the third batch.

The elaborate event at the city’s central mosque included 1,111 previously divorced women and an equal number of men, many of whom had also been married before.

The mass wedding program was launched two years ago by the state government and sharia police, or Hisbah, who enforce Islamic law, to counter what officials have described as a divorce epidemic.

According to Hisbah chief, Aminu Daurawa, the program has arranged 4,461 marriages over the last 18 months.

Under the match-making program, the state government pays the traditional bride price, provides brides with furniture and seed money to start a small business.

Just imagine. The fourth time?. The same people will live for two years and find out they are not compatible together and divorce again, only for these goons to re-marry them again. Misplaced priority!!. Why not provide jobs and education to both parties?. Why not employ a marriage counselor to lecture these divorcees, so they can have a long lasting marriage?. See the way they are wedding them in BATCHES like say dem be corpers. Smdh!!. Is marriage everything?. Marriage without means to put food on the table or employment to cater for their future kids is as good as dead. Mtcheeewww
