Public and private toilets in accra

12.Policy‑makers of the Accra Metropolitan Area (AMA) responsible for liquid waste management face a dilemma : should they promote and improve public toilet facilities in the city or should they encourage and assist inhabitants in having their own toilet in the house ? Many homes in Accra do not have their own toilet. Toilets and bathrooms in houses in the central business areas have sometimes been converted into rooms and stores. As a result, the residents of such homes rely on public toilets, which may be inadequate and face serious maintenance problems. According to the metropolitan authority, public toilets are meant for visitors to the city and not for residents. The oppositeisthe rule however. Public toilets have become permanent features for many residents in Accra as places to ease themselves. Accra faces acute sanitation problems. These are manifested in unsanitary conditions in and around most of the public toilets, poor and dilapidated infrastructure for liquid waste management, inadequate funding for maintenance, poor sanitary habits, deficient management of existing toilet facilities, indiscriminate defecation in open spaces, into water bodies and drains, irregular collection of liquid waste from sep tic and other storage tanks, as well as from pan latrines, and limited connections from houses to the central sewage system.
Present situation
13. The existing toilet facilities in Accra, both private and public, include pan (or bucket) latrines, pit latrines, septic tank latrines, KVIPs (aparticular type of storage tank), and water closets (WCs) with or without connection to the central sewage system. There are two types of public toilet ownership, namely (i) those built by the local authority, and (ii) those built by private firms and individuals for commercial purposes. The types and numbers of public toilet facilities available in the six, sub‑metropolitan assemblies of AMA, are as follows : Ashiedu Keteke 26, Ablekuma 40, Osu Klottey 19, Okaikoi 11, Ayawaso 28, and Kpeshie 34. Privately built public toilets are few in number. The public toilet facilities are inadequate compared to the size of the population lacking toilet facilities in their houses. Long queues could be observed during early morning and evening rush hours. According to residents, some people defecate in empty spaces because of (i) the cost ofapublic toilet visit, (ii)alack of toilets in the vicinity, (iii) long distances between public toilets and their houses, and (iv) the untidiness of the toilet facilities. grin In May 1999, user‑fees ranged from ¢100.00 to ¢150.00 per visit, depending upon the facility. The AMA determines the user‑fees.

D existing infrastructure of D Accra central sewage system is in adequate. In 1999, there were less than 1,000 units connected to the central sewage system (GW&SC 1999). In most places, the infrastructure for waste managemen tis either non‑existent or inadeplorable state. As Akuffo (1999) noted, there are about 18 sewage systems and sewage treatment plants in Accra, but none of them is operating according to plan.D system that was built for Central Accra in the early 1970s by D Busia government is no longer adequate. There are few connections and links to water to en able flushing are insufficient. Waste management has broken down due 2 a lack of human, logistic and financial resources. The present approach based on harangue, sermonising and cleanUP campaignsisnot helpful. There is a need 4 injection of capital into the system, including strengthening existing institutions. Investments in plants and equipment in the present circumstances of complete institutional breakdown are clearly not the right approach.

If availability of toilet facilities and the method of removal and disposal are indications of level of development, the city of Accra cannot be rated high on the scale of development.A survey of toilet facilities in Accra by the AMA in 1992 showed that :
40% of the population had access to private toilets discharging into septic tanks or cesspools ;
25% used public toilets whereafeeischarged per visit. There are about 127 public toilets in Accra ;
20% still used private, pan latrines ;
5% had access to private KVIPs and
10% of the population had no access to any toilet facility and defecated in open spaces.

D critical shortage of toilet facilities in Accra is obvious from these figures. Let us briefly look at the various types of services.

Cesspit service

D AMA and private firms carry out cesspit service with suction trucks. In addition to these, other organisations such as the Volta River Authority, the security services (army, police, prisons, and fire service), the University of Ghana, and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, etc., run their own suction trucks to empty the cesspits of staff bungalows and a few private houses.

These organisations discharge their waste at the Waste Management Department's (WMD) treatment plants

Jonathan launches first Nigerian – builtdrone
Premium Times
Published: December 17,2013

The drone will be used for a variety of functions.
President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday in Kaduna unveiled the country’s first indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (drone), GULMA, designed and constructed by the Nigerian Air Force.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Jonathan said that the unveiling of the vehicle marked another landmark moment in the nation’s history.
He said that besides its diversemilitaryapplication, the vessel would provide a range of benefits in disaster management, power line surveys and law enforcement.
Mr. Jonathan said that the vehicle would also be useful in aerial imaging/mapping, telecommunications and weather monitoring.
“It is also rapidly becoming an important tool in news coverage, environmental monitoring, and oil and gas exploration.
“Considering the potential impact of its benefit and versatility, I cannot but say how proud I am of the men and women of our Armed Forces,” the president said.
“Apart from their commitment to the protection of our sovereignty, they are helping to keep our nation ahead inmilitaryscience and technology and to keep their civilian counterparts on their toes.
“Today, as we stand in appreciation of the gallant men and women of our Air Force, we are reminded that hard work and diligence can break many barriers,’’ he said.
Mr. Jonathan commended the Chief of Air Staff and all officers and men of the Nigerian Air Force for the achievement, noting that it would strengthen the country. He said it would also enhance the nation’s role in peace keeping and conflict prevention.
The president said he was optimistic that this stride by the Nigerian Air Force would mark a turning point for indigenous technology in every sector of the nation’s life.
“Let me assure the Air Force of the Federal Government’s support for this and all other research projects. We will encourage and assist private sector concerns to key into mass production of the project to achieve the highest and best commercial use of this prototype Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.
“As I said in my Independence Day address, our nation is made great by the big and small efforts of regular citizens. Indeed, indigenous initiatives remain indispensable in achieving national greatness.
“To retain the country’s importance on the global stage, we must continue to produce leaders in science, technology, and engineering, and invest more in ideas,” the president said.
In his remark, the Supervising Minister of Defence, Labaran Maku, said the development of a surveillance aircraft by the Nigerian Air Force was a bold statement of government’s resolve to provide security for the Nigerian populace.
Mr. Maku, who is the Minister of Information, said that the GULMA UAV would potentially afford the armed forces a window of immense opportunities in its task of acquiring timely intelligence and combating criminality.
“Although the UAV was a brainchild of the Nigerian Air Force, it is important that other services and security agencies incorporate it into their operations, if its potential is to be fully harnessed.
“There is therefore, the need for a comprehensive policy on UAV acquisition and operation to optimise the employment of GULMA UAV by all services and security agencies,’’ he said.
Earlier, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, had said that the GULMA was designed to meet vast expectations and needs.
Mr. Badeh said that the GULMA could be employed by the armed forces and security agencies for the protection of the country.
He explained that the air force envisaged partnership with agencies such as NEMA and the
NigeriaAir Space Management Agencyfor weather forecasting.
“Furthermore, the GULMA, as a qualitative, timely and reliable source of information could serve as a powerful tool for media practitioners.
“To sustain the current tempo of development, the NAF would require the assistance of government in infrastructure and human capacity development,” the Air chief said.

NIGERIASAT-2 (shown here in a rendered image) andNigeriaSat-X will take infrared readings of Nigeria's farms, and beam down data estimating next season's crop forecast
Correction attached
This is the VOA Special English Technology Report.
Nigeria has launched the first satellite designed and built byAfricans. The NigeriaSat-X is one of two Earth observation satellites that the country recently launched. These are Nigeria's third and fourth satellites.
The NigeriaSat-X is the result of a training agreement between the National Space Research and Development Agency and a company called Surrey Satellite Technology. Twenty-six Nigerian engineers attended a training program over an eighteen-month period at the satellite developer’s offices in the United Kingdom.
Steve Young is head of business development for the company. He says the skills that the young Nigerian scientists have learned should help not only their country's space program.
STEVE YOUNG: “You are now beginning to train a corps of very experienced engineers, high-technology technicians, and people who are going to benefit the wider economy. That also is a very good effect that the Nigerians get in investing in high-tech programs. They've got to develop their economy, and that's one of the ways they do that is by doing this.”
The cameras on the satellites can show details of objects as small as two and a half meters across. These images will be used to map territory and help with city planning. The pictures can also provide valuable information about crop and land conditions, and assist in disaster relief efforts.
Steve Young says this kind of information is often lacking in developing countries.
STEVE YOUNG: “We often take it for granted in industrialized nations that we have all this information, we have accurate maps, we have land registries, we have planning systems, we have precision agriculture systems. We have all this stuff in place, but for a lot of countries, they don't.”

If recent developments at Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited (IVM) are enough foretaste of what the future holds for the Nnewi-based autoplant, then it is well on the way to becoming the corporate version of the biblical prophet that is respected more abroad than at home.
Though production is yet togather full momentum, theplantand the vehicles that have so far rolled off the production lines have been attracting attention from the ECOWAS sub-regional markets, particular Ghana which last week sent a top-level delegation to Nnewi, todiscuss business with the management of Innoson.
This is ironically coming at a time when the Nigerian auto makers, including the new Nnewiplant, are as usual going cap-in-hand to the Federal Government, appealing to be keyed into the N10 billion mass transit scheme being packaged by the Urban Development Bank, which has already advertised its preference for imported fully built-upvehicles.
Led by the Deputy Minister for Transport, Madam Dzifa Aku Attivor, the visitors toured various sections of the autoplant(and briefly watched productioninprogress), the plastics-making sister companyinEmene, Enugu, which supplies some of the vehicles’ parts and accessories, as well as a new tyre manufacturing company, General Tyres and Tubes Limited, also a member of the Innoson Group.
The Deputy Minister who repeatedly expressed how “very, very impressed” she was during the tour of the autoplant, said she and her team were on a fact- finding mission. She disclosed that they wereinNigeriatoexplore the possibility of not just introducing some of Innoson Group’s productstothe Ghanaian market, but also settingupsimilar autoplantinGhana.
Assuring thatGhanahas a very friendly business environment which enhances quick return on investments, Madam Aku implored the Chairman of Innoson Group, Chief Innocent Chukwumatocome overtoher country, adding, “I wanttoappealtohimtosetupaplantinGhana, and he will have return on his investments”. A package of incentives, accordingtoher, is awaiting Innoson, if he decidestotake the offer.
The delegation showered encomiums on Chief Chukwuma, for his foresight and entrepreneurial acumen, which they said were evidentinthe Nnewi autoplantand his other investmentsinthe manufacturing sector.
Both the Deputy Minister and the Deputy Chairman of Ghana’s ruling party (NDC), Sinare Saleh, who was also part of the delegation, harped on the needtodo away with the drawbacks of the economic cooperation agreements by the ECOWAS sub-regional grouping, inordertoensure that business transactions boon among the peoples of the member-states, as against the present situation where scarce resources are losttoimports from outside the African continent.
If Innoson vehicles are good, reasonable priced and suitable for West African roads, it would amounttowastagetocontinuetogo far for imports, Saleh argued after the tour of the autoplant. Commenting earlier also a brief reception for the visitor at theplant, both the Chairman of All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, and a well known campaigner for a viable auto industryinNigeria, Chief David V.C. Obi, made a case for the patronage of the products of Innosonplantand other locally made vehicles.
Dr.Obi who is the Chairman of ALCMAN, an association manufacturers and suppliers of vital componentstothe auto makersinNigeria, told the guests that vehicles made by Innoson meet very high international standards.
Taking the visitors through the production lines, Chief Chukwuma said the product range so far includes mini, midi and luxury buses, pick-ups and SUVs. The buses have air-conditioners and video entertainment. However, he disclosed that there were planstowiden the product mixtoaccommodate more commercial and purpose-built vehicles, including refuse collectors/compactors.
Reactingtothe offer by the Ghanaian governmenttoavail himself of the attractive incentivesintheir country andsetupaplant, Chukwuma said he would give it a serious thought, after the Nnewi auto maker has stabilised.
He said: “I consider it a big honour and privilege for the government ofGhanatomake me such a rare offer. I will think about it. But for now, the important thing istomake sure that there is enough patronage for Innoson vehiclesinNigeria, and that Innoson itself meets the demand of the local marketinterms of quality, volume and after-sales support. PetroDolla2: this is exactly what I always say about the low IQ level of most nigerians. is it something to do with the high poverty level or plain stvpidity? you just said the photos posted about nigerian universities were to 'smear' the FG and defend ASUU's strike. Did it also strike you that the report about Ghana's universities could also be part of a smear campaign? or the 'smear' applies to only nigeria, and not Ghana? such pathetic people with a sh1thole personality!

Ok

Military is not about numbers but quality, as with Nigeria in anything y'all take quantity over quality. Military that couldn't save its own citizens. What happened to bakassi

Foreign relations- u dare compare Ghana foreign relation to that of Nigeria. With your huge natural resources and human resources Ghana shouldn't be anywhere near Nigeria when it comes to foreign relationship but that is not the case. Take a look at your own people leaving your country for Ghana. That says it all

Science and tech non of the satellite you launched was built by a nigerian. So stop making noise. Nigeria haven't built drones nor do they own drones, they haven't built a ship or any of the things you talked about. Nigeria haven't built shit

Literature- u act like Ghana doesn't have any writers

Movies- yeah Nigeria might be third in terms of quantity. U can't compare Nigeria
Movies to Ghana. We are talking about quality from sound, editing, picture quality and the command of the English language

Education- Ghanaian schools are rated higher than Nigeria schools go back as far as 2000s and you will see. There are many different ranks. Some has nigerian school higher but the overwhelming rankings has Ghana schools higher. It is evident in the number of Nigerians that troop into Ghanaian unis, u won't find any Ghanaian in nigerian uni. Ghanaian degrees are rated higher than that of Nigeria. Ghanaian students have easier access to top universities in America and uk

Sports- no competition Ghana is above Nigeria. Compare out football team to that of Nigeria. Please

Infrastructure- why do you think Ghana HDI is medium and Nigeria is low. Come on, u lack all the necessities high unemployment, bad health care, poor schools, no security, and more.

Do your research before you speak, Nigeria is quantity over quality

This is the ranking: www.globalfirepower.com/countries-listing-africa.asp or is globalfirepower.com not reliable too? Ghana ain't even in the top 7. If you don't know jack just shut up, and what has heeding to the ICJ's ruling over bakassi got to do with military?

Foreign relations: *I actually laughed when I read this cheesy * Seriously? What does people leaving for Ghana got to do with foreign relations? Have I been wasting posts with a dullard?? We employ you in country, so f**k off.

Science and technology: this the drone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq_Xqa3Wg-8 fully built in Nigeria, the satellites were built by chinese with help of Nigerian engineers (NSRDA). Would you shut up nw? Let me add more, made in Nigeria warship: m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-18300358 made in Nigeria armoured vehicle: beegeagle./2013/07/15/technology-transfer-at-proforce-defence/ Have you heard of innoson too? Producing made in Nigeria vehicles, not coupled in Nigeria, but manufactured in Nigeria.

Literature: Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Adichie. Sum up the achievements of all you have and measure up against these three. Near? Dispute this and I would disgrace your writers.

Movies: stop arguing like my 12yrs old cousin. I stated facts, dispute them with facts, this is it again, Nigeria swept the AMVCA awards, why?

Education: this is my last reply to you, I just realised you are one shameless idi.ot, top 10 african schools: www.4icu.org/topAfrica/ Not until recent years did SA and Egyptian schools displace Nigerian unis. Stop making petty unfounded assumptions.

Sports: we won African nations cup, what nonsense are you talking about? Did you win any silver in the last olympics? Your youth team, can they be compared to ours? We just won u17 world cup. Come on man, if you want to lie, at least be sensible in doing so.

You can now forever remain silent.

Ghana is 135 on HDI, Nigeria is 153, comparing with a developing with over 600% of your population, smh.
