NORTHERN caucus of All Progressives Congress (APC) met in Abuja, on Tuesday, over the demands of chieftains contending the leadership of the party with defecting governors in their states.

The meeting was reportedly called to address the misgivings of formers governors Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto State, Ibrahim Shekarau of Kano State and former military administrator of Lagos and Borno states, General Buba Marwa.

The trio had been at loggerheads with Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto and Murtala Nyako of Adamawa over the control of party structures in their states.

While Kwankwaso and Shekarau were said to be physically present at the meeting, Marwa was reportedly absent, though his complaints also received attention.
It was learnt that it was agreed at the meeting that a committee should be raised to table their grievances with the national leadership of the party for a permanent solution.

Membership of the committee was yet to be named as of the time of going to press.

A source at the meeting revealed that leaders of the party from the North discovered that the complaints were founded more on ego, ambitions and personality clash, which the party leadership had been preaching against.

The source hinted that it might be impossible for the party to grant any of the requests of the complainants, suggesting that they would either stay in the party or seek relevance elsewhere.

A similar meeting in Kano with Kwankwaso and Shekarau in attendance reportedly achieved no result.

While the chairman of the reconciliation meeting set up by the party on integration, Chief John Oyegun, was reportedly at the Kano meeting, he was said to be absent at the Abuja meeting.

A source at the meeting disclosed that the peace meeting might not achieve much at the end of the day, because the gathering did not have any locus on which it could stand to take any decision, as the decision of the party to hand over state structures to defecting governors might subsist.

It was gathered that one of the former governors contending party structure with the sitting governor in his state had a history getting leadership position at all costs.

The former governor was reportedly interested in running for presidency on APC platform in 2015.

It was learnt that at the last time he attempted running for the office, a screening panel set up by the party had asked him to tell of his exposure, with the former governor hinging his exposure on his frequent visits to Mecca only.

A younger element in the said party was eventually fielded in his stead, after his delivery was reportedly mocked by the committee.

A source in the know said the former governor could not be faulted, as his main worldview was Mecca, because his major investments were said to be domiciled in the country.

A former governorship candidate in a Northern state was also said to be on his way out of the party, following the defection of the governor who had earlier defeated him at the polls.

Sources however said that leaders of the APC were angry with the conduct of Bafarawa and Marwa, who were said to be over-ambitious.

One of the leaders at the meeting expressed worry at Bafarawa’s conduct, especially from his days in the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), where he defected to another party because he was not allowed to control party structure.

“The time has come for Bafarawa to decide what he wants,” a source said, adding that a recent meeting of the PGF exhaustively deliberated on the issue of position sharing.

Those involved in the meetings, according to sources, included former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mallam Nasir el-Rufai; former speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Bello Masari; party’s spokesman, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; interim national secretary, Tijjani Musa Tumsal; Director General of Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Salihu Luqman; Mr Abubakar Malami and Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed.

Sources told the Nigerian Tribune that a recent meeting of the Progressive Governors Forum had decided that the defecting governors would be allowed to appoint interim executive committees the under their control, while the party could find ways of accommodating the old aggrieved members.

In another development, it has emerged that three of the defecting governors might soon return to PDP, following an accord ratified by the PDP Governors Forum recently.

The agreement had already been presented to President Goodluck Jonathan, sources said on Wednesday.

It was learnt that PDP stakeholders were bent on having the governors back, to further compound the crisis rocking APC.

A source close to PDP said one of the agreements had to do with restructuring of the party, a development which the president was said to have accepted.

They need to preach harder.

Quite unfortunately, those saddled with the responsibilities to work out harmonious relationship amongst this gladiators are amateurs in managing political dispute. They need a man with experience and sagacity of Anenih. They can borrow him from PDP.

If the last bolded sentence is true, then the governor has taken over the party, formed a cult and every other members APC will have to worship them.

The problem the aggrieved governors had with the PDP was that they were not given powers to control their party structures at the ward, local government, state and federal level. They wanted a figure- head national party chairman that would do their bidding , not his or the party's.

The National Governors Association, in America, played a large role in making Bill Clinton president, but he had to work to ensure that their influence is wittled down, so as not to let a new cabal be born on their political soil.

After winning the fight to control the party structures in their respective states, these governors would wrestle Asiwaju and his boy, Aregbesola, for the soul of the APC.

Amaechi and Oshiomhole from the SS shall join forces with Amosun and Ajimobi in the SW and the other northern governors to seize the party structure.

Tinubu miscalculated in this latest political calculation.
