chinani i agree with you about it being what white people think black people want to see

i think its also what white people think of when they think of a black person in general
Re: Hip-hop Video Vixens by chinani(f): 11:56pm On Jun 26, 2006
@Shotta
I agree with both your statements!

I wish more video girls would be less opportunistic and more entrepreneurial likie Melyssa Ford. Any person with a calculator know that the $5000 these girls are paid is peanuts in comparison to the millions grossed in record sales, royalties and airplay.

The fact is; your a*ss may get you in a boardroom but only intelligence will keep you there. How many of these girls really do business with thesese rappers and record execs?

It's their choice but they need to be real and not idealistic because whether they like it or not; their integrity is being compromised. Who wants to hire the "Salt shaker" girl even iof she is qualified?

Be a grown woman; make your decisions. Although; I prefer to make decisions that wont bite me in the a*ss.

López financed singing and dancing lessons for herself from the age of 16. After leaving a one semster-long college career, López divided her time between working in a legal office, dance classes, and dance performances in Manhattan clubs at night. After months of auditioning for dance roles, López was selected as a dancer for various rap artists' music videos, and was given a guest spot on the American Music Awards. After being rejected for the role twice, Lopez gained her first regular high profile gig was as a "Fly Girl" dancer on the television comedy program, In Living Color in 1991,

Re: Hip-hop Video Vixens by my2cents(m): 8:09pm On Jun 28, 2006
It all boils down to the almight $$ -

There is a market for hip hop (of which white suburban kids make up the majority shocked shocked), and the creators of these videos know that sex sells. So they pack as many pretty girls on there as possible so as to generate sales. On the TV side, the execs know that people want to c risque-dressed women. More eyes on watching means more ad revenue which means more bonus for the CEO at the end of the year.

What gets me with most of these videos is how they start out: When the rapper is doing his very first video, it is always in some hood. Probably where he grew up and done there most likely because he can't afford for much money to be taken out of his paycheck, courtesy of "recording expenses". The women are hood rats, the houses are dilapidated, and 99% of the pple have gold teeth. The minute he hits platinum, watch his next video. All the women on there look like they r from another planet.

Exploited or not, people hv to pay their bills, and fortunately/unfortunately, in capitalism, anything goes. There is a lot of $$ in the hip hop industry and as nature doesn't like a vacuum, if one rapper doesnt do it, another will.

As always, my 2 cents
Re: Hip-hop Video Vixens by 2fine4u(f): 8:52pm On Jun 28, 2006
@ my 2 cents
well said, yaa there are a lot of $$ involved in hip-hop music/industry but still most of this videos girls are not paid. some are just there to shake their bum bum and be exposed to who might notice and call them up for something else. i dont think that's a good way to expose yourself but still they gott@ do what they gott@ do. ppl like Mylessa Ford get offended when fans refer to her as just a video vixen, she wann@ be refered to as a TV Host. no matter where u end up workin, ppl are always gonn@ refer to u as a video hoe and i dont think they get much respect after that undecided
Re: Hip-hop Video Vixens by chinani(f): 9:10pm On Jun 28, 2006
@My2cents
Hood rats? Well that's a pejorative if I've ever heard one. What makes them different from the video vixens? Skin tone? I dunno; there's no difference to me.

@Lunafish
Which video --- has gotten to any boardroom. Please, name a boardroom. BET is not a boardroom. Melissa Ford makes nothing compared to an avg looking, middle aged Jennifer Anniston. Even when J. Anniston was her age she was making more money & preparing herself well for a future in the entertainment industry. The key word is future. Most of these ladies will last just as long as their butts are round & high. . . Meaning they are not "movers & shakers". They are who "movers & shakers" pay for self-esteem. (It's cheaper than therapy.)

Er, what charities does Melissa Ford promote The only charities I've ever heard of her w/ involve professional Ball players. Surprise, surprise. . .

@chicani

These girls do get in the boardroom; you can find them under the desk. lol
Re: Hip-hop Video Vixens by Nia: 1:12am On Jun 29, 2006
I think the "sex sells" message is not just a black problem. Many (white) women in Hollywood have to endure some skin exposure (read nudity) for people to see that "they've arrived". One of the problems with hip-hop, though, is that for so long there hasn't been a balance. Things are becoming too one-sided. The positive messages are being drowned out by sex and ass-shaking, getting rich or die trying, Nigga this, Nigga that. And this appears to be the order of the day. What the women in these videos don't understand is that there are many females out there who have no problem getting on screen and shaking it, so they will never be able to make a reasonable amount of money or not have to sleep with rappers as long as there's that large pool of supply.
I know the CEO of BET is a woman and I am wondering why she hasn't used her influence to at least try to reduce what's going on.
Besides some old-school stuff, these days I rarely listen to mainstream hip-hop or watch the videos.

i no blame all of una. so many funny comments on this thread. well, you all are complaining of black american ladies cos you live in yankee when "black" nigerian ladies are coming from behind (or do i say they've dropped down and ready to get their eagle on). do you think Melyssa Ford and her likes can fly? wait until Edo girls (no offence to my Edo sisters) return from Italy and then we'll see who's swimming skillfully in the "cheddas pool".

how many of you temporary non-nigerians (nigerians living outside naija) have seen nigerian videos lately? we're just waiting to start seeing bra and thongs on screen before we start our own "Sound City / Music Africa Uncut" thread.

@chinani

i advise you to start praying for your sisters at home first because the situation of the country might make them even do worse than sell a story worth N50,000.
Re: Hip-hop Video Vixens by verb: 5:05am On Jun 29, 2006
men! my name says it all let me "VERB" my piece,
the right name was just mentioned melyssa ford. look melyssa ford with her fore head like yam in an interview actually tried to seperate or segregate herself from the other girls who date, have sex, free service and do uncuts for or with the artists. when the truth of the matter is women act as accessories to these artists "ANY" girl in a video (no matter who) is equivalent to a car, cellphone, crib or whatever. all she is is affordable, he can afford for her to dress down and get in the video and please somebody ask her whether or not she's ever "DATED" an artist and whether or not they ever had sex and the answer's gonn' be yes. its simple some girls play hard to get others don't every woman knows she's not hard to impress be you oprah be you karrine stefans.

VERB,

I have only a foggy idea of what you're saying here.

IBB:

Nope, but my comments were not geography specific. I think what I think whether the girls be American (Black, White, Undecided) or native Nigerian or Japanese. Oh, and I rep Naija all day, everyday!

IBB:

My dear I pray for my sisters already. The reason I have so much contempt for the native born women who do it in America, Uk and the West, is b/c they have OPTIONS. I'm not condoning it for my sisters at home but GOD HELP ME is the women in are not desperate. D-E-S-P-E-R-A-T-E. . .Again, I'm not condoning it but if you had nothing. . . I think about the Hurricane Katrina people at times & the stories I've heard (live in Houston, so lots of the folks are here) about DEATH and I wonder what I would have done. Luckily, I wasn't in that situation, but what would I have done.

To Whom Much Has Been Given, Much Is Expected. . .meaning: if you're blessed to live in a country, largely free of pollution, w/ almost free/cheap education, laws, democracy, and a decent, sustainable progressive example of gender equity, don't shake your ass and tell me you're paying for college. I'm not Judge Judy, but I don't play that funny stuff either. . .

hahaha

J-Lo is a hoe just like the rest. She slept around to get a record deal and hooked up with the likes of P-Diddy to push her album and the white actor to do two films with him. She might not shake her ass in music videos but she is the alpha female, using her ASSets to promote her carrier.

Its no coincidence her first Sony Music record came out while dating a Sony Music Exec. You do not go from music videos to record deals having no singing talent without doing some down low ish

That Exec was Mariah Carey's ex-hubby. And the ex-hubby arranged for J-Lo to do a song w/ Ja Rule of (Murder) Inc. Records just as Mariah Carey's album (w/ a duet w/ a rapper) was coming out. How do I know? Irv Gotti - CEO of (Murder) Inc. Records said so & laughed b/c he knew it was all spite. So yes, J-Lo is not innocent, though she has more talent that the rest. . .not loads, but more. . .

What I don't understand is, why would these women degrade themselves like that period? Who cares if it's for the money or fame, what about their self dignity man! Damn I am getting tired of seeing these chicks shake their ass, and gyrate on these wack ass rappers too. But what I feel sorry for is that most of these chicks seem to lack common sense. Tell me something. What is the difference between a video model who is half naked and shaking her ass or walking around in a video, and a video ho? To me they are in the same category. How the hell can you say a video model is different because she has self-respect but she also does videos half ass naked? Get the hell out of here. Most of the rap put out today is garbage, and the videos are too. But yet people want to see this stupid shit so who are the real idiots? What will these dumb ass broads tell their kids? What if their parents have seen that shit? They have to be ashamed man undecided.

I don't care what anyone says. To me they are all retarded women, who actually believe they can get rich off of doing videos. Unless they are the actual star in the video, then they need to sit their ass down somewhere. I know all rappers don't use women like that in their videos, but I could never listen to 90% of rap out there. The old school is always better than the shit that comes out today.

If a rapper needs to use props or women to sell his shit, then he has no talent. It's as simple as that. When he comes out, his talent alone should be the reason people go buy his cd. But I guess as long as the women aren't saying NO to doing the actual videos then the rappers could care less. What kills me is that some of those women even have decent careers, yet the come and do videos just to look like another video ho. And then I sit and ask myself what kind of mentality does these chicks have? I guess a very bleeped up one, because if they make more money at their actual job than in videos, what is really the point of them doing that? They see other girls in the videos too, so it must be a case of monkey see, monkey do syndrome.

When i see a black person i don't automatically think that they're trashy or classless and I'm white. Hos come in all colors white, black, hispanic, asian whatever. I know alot of blacks who are successful and don't result to using their body instead of their minds on videos or porn or anything. People just need to stop drawing out the race card because it's getting very old. Alot of people want peace between all races yet they continue to say shit. Personally, I think that what these women do is very wrong and they need to find something outside of this industry but if that's what they wanna do, you can't talk them out of it. I guess it's all about the easy money.  undecided
