NYSC is a total waste of time i mean after all the strikes postponing of exams and stuff you now extend their suffering by another year or more and then you do a Charles Soludo and tell the whole world that Nigerian Graduates are unemployable.The youth of Nigeria deserve better

Even though the current system aint working, i think there is some kinda advantage to it.
1. Some pple using it opportunity to visit and actually mix with other tribes of Nigeria, i have read on one of those forum, where a northerners said, it allowed him the opportunity to kno another area of Nija and he is still in love with the area till today.

2. Gives some of the participant opportunity to make connection that is highly needed be4 entering into the work force.

3. Some pple while in school never got the chance to have fun, and while serving, they have the opportunity to have fun and enjoy be4 the tough life that is ahead.

4. many pple have served and were retained by coys that they served at.

5. It is that time for most pple to actually make up their mind on what they wanna do, be4 the community start bugging them for money and help.

6. It serves of opportunity for some babes and guys to get laid.

7. Many participants met their future husband and wife there.

8. makes pple to know there cld be cruel training.

9. Help some to lose wait.

and i am sure there are many more.
So i think the system shd be revamped and not scrapped.

The scheme is ok. But what i feel is that its main purpose of being established is no longer being adhered to. It's been bastardized by a lot of the so called Nigerian factors. If all things can be put back in place and make the program what it ought to be. I feel its a relevant program.
I enjoyed the usual three weeks in camp, very very interesting one. NYSC needs more improvement. Both the government and the private sector can help add more touch to it and make it more better.

I think the idea behind NYSC is still a good one. Its raison d'etre is still valid.The problem, as in most FG projects, lies in the inability of the govt to review and change the scheme so that it remains relevant. Even though there are still divisive forces within the country (the main reason why the scheme was set up in the first place) times have changed since the civil war but unfortunately the scheme has not.
The way it is structured today the scheme is expensive and too long.
I would like to see a shorter period for the NYSC, possibly six months or less with about 4 to 6 batches a year. This time should be used solely for National service and not jobs/primary assignment duties. The 20% retention rate of the corpers indicates the failure of the scheme to provide jobs for graduates.
Getting jobs is an 'every one for himself issue', therefore I would like to see better skills training for corpers by the NYSC.

I am against scrapping the scheme.

at the time NYSC was set up, we had a fraction of the graduates we have now & the country has come a long way since then.

My recommendations inline with your own are as follows.

1. length of time spent can even be 3 months.

2.Increasing the Camping/paramilitary aspects of the scheme, camping can be for 6 weeks. (anybody whose served will tell u camp was the best part), also the camping experience can be further enriched and resources that would've been spent paying full years allowance can be used to build expand & improve facilities in orientation camps.

3.Primary assignments to profit oriented venture should be scrapped: since actual service will be for 2 to 4 months excluding camp, all corpers shuld be engaged full time in community development activities. eg. teaching, traffic control, tree planting, creating awareness for govt programmes etc. etc.

4. For ppl that want to get into government service esp. Military & police, their NYSC record should serve as major qualification points and shortcut for same.

5. the most controversial of all is that posting to choice states, Lagos, FCT, RIVERS etc etc could be banned unless strict enforcement of the non-profit oriented nature of the service is ensured.

If these recommendation r in place, the NYSC scheme becomes a level playing field for all and also, Graduates will some sense of patriotism instilled whilst having fun and not worrying (for d time being) about being retained at work place etc etc.

Okay this is just a response to your statement. I don't think more schools is the solution right now. As uptight as this might sound. The worst thing that happened to Nigeria is "Free Education". With the type of economy we have, we shouldn't be graduating as many students, More emphasis should be placed on technical schools. A lot of filipinos are doing jobs that Nigerians can do because there are literarily no Nigerians to do the jobs. Everybody wants to go to the university. Even "dull" students want to go to school. The end result is that you have 1-2million graduates with 60% of them lacking the appropriate know how/ability to perform as required.
If entry into universities is made a lot tighter, we will have less people getting into schools and people will focus on other careers.
Imagine the number of people rushing to get into polytechnics when they know there is an OND/HND stigma with employers.

90% of the students graduate with a "pass" and complain that they don't have jobs, where d job dey.

We graduate more students than the U.S and Britain put together every year. Please tell me how u won't have underemployment/unemployment.

absolutely irrelevant, just another way to enrich some, my younger ones just finished their orientation and i was made to understand if they are correct, that the federal government spends N800,000.00( EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND NAIRA)on each corp member, when the meals served would be rejected by my dog, i was wondering if the information was correct and if it is, then am sorry to say NIGERIA IS DOOMED.

I would prefer NYSC to be upgraded to FULL military training,since loads of people are complaining about meager pay and getting un-beneficial work experience.That would be a fantastic way to spend the year

For Afam, Rhino and others who want NYSC so much, the solution is simple - make it VOLUNTARY, this will increase the pay and remove all the competition and bribing into getting FCT, Lagos, etc

u people know obviously that govt cannot scrap the nysc scheme. even if govt wants to do it, those people in govt that eat their own natural cake through the scheme cannot allow it to happen. do u know how much they pocket in awarding the contract of producing millions of kahkis, caps, stocks, junging boots etc in a year. i served in kebbi state where we got only two thousand naira at the end of month from state plus little the fed govt paid . tell me how u should survive with such amount in a strange land.

i used to say nysc shud be scrapped but after passing thru the recent 3wks orientation camp experience, i dont think so.the program may not give monetary benefits but its a once only kind of experience that exposes the individual to all the challenges u need to pass thru to survive, from meeting nu people to surviving in a nu town, at a nu job with minimal money.plus it depends on how u use the experience, u could make it work for you or just carry on whinning about it.to all the otondos out there complaining about NYSC, it can be betta but it shud stay.

I am still trying to make a sense out of this, has pple that lost their kids gotta do with the scheme, i will like to know how parents cld lose their kids to the scheeme, ple, educate me.
Beside, if we have to worry about pple dying, i guess, all molues in Nigeria shd be scrapped, all Okada needs to be gone, and Ibadan Lagos expressway shd be turned into a farm land, cos pple are dying on the damn road by day, infact, with all the fatalities on Nigerian planes, i guess, we shd go back into horse back riding.

It is very relevant as first step towards national service, it is a place where people that wouldn't otherwise mix actually mingle; like someone also mentioned it helps graduate not be unemployed immediate after graduation. But it is absolutely important that the service be seriously improve to meet modern challenges. In many it has done its job in reducing regional/tribal tension that existed at the time it was inaugurated under Gowon stewardship of the state. Now it should serve a different purpose, more of Work Training Program rather than a Socialistic national development scheme.

One way to improve the scheme is to change it from its present format. Make everyone serve in their states of origin. That way you get much better out of them and force other states who are contributing very little to the nation work even harder. This idea that states like Zamfara who contribute pittance in terms of manpower to NYSC end up with plenty of free labour does not encourage productivity.

to start with, this idea of NYSC being only set up to "foster unity" is fundamentally flawed and is a reflection of nigeria's primary problem - citizenship.
You dont force a New Yorker to go work for one yr in Arizona to "foster unity" . . . every American considers himself one under the stars and stripes.

Until we get to a point where a Nigerian thinks of nation first before tribe we would be decieving ourselves even if NYSC were extended to 22yrs.
