Ok I was offered psychology in Unilag instead of economics. My dream was to get two degrees, one masters and a PhD. Economics was my second choice too after trying for a long time to get medicine. You see how Nigeria changes people's destiny.

I don't regret studying psychology. The major problem of a psychologist is that we do not apply what we know on ourselves. Its easier for us to study, evaluate, observe people's behaviour and generally help and build people but we do a bad job at helping ourselves. When I meet people for the first time the first thing they ask is can I tell them about themselves. undecided like really I just met u within some minutes. Another problem I have as a psychologist is separating my religious views from abnormal behaviour.

Psychology is a beautiful course. In my time in school, we visited yaba left. Met wiv other psychologist working hand in hand wiv psychiatrist. Also went to aro a lot of times. It's a shame that we are not duly recognised because Africans are too religious. Rather than visit a psychologist, they go for a pastor. Wiv time, we would gain our rightful place in an African society

is this different from shrink?
.

Different but Psychiatry is being increasingly called "Psychological Medicine". Much like Morbid Anatomy is now called Pathology. Just to reduce the stigma.

Psychology has more focus on social aspects like childhood, growth, development, attachment, behaviour and others.

But the specialist area of Clinical Psychology compliments Psychiatry very well. In fact, Psychological techniques are now very much part of Psychiatry: like CBT, desensitisation, etc.

In fact during Psychiatry phase back in the day in University, I wished I knew more about psychology.

I am a psychology graduate, uni uyo.

I was one of the best students and people thought a job would be waiting for me. Deep down I never intended to work... I just wanted to use my knowledg in psychology to become a good fiction writer. I wanted to, through my stories, educate nigerians on some psychological findings and make then understand why they behaved the way they do.
Its been almost seven years and I am still on that journey. I have written six books but no fund to publish and print hence my need for a job. I work now but its giving me little time to write. And writing is my hubby.

Religion is one of the reasons psychology is backward in Nigeria. People quickly attribute human behaviours they don't understand to the devil or village manipulations. Eg sleep paralysis, psychosomatic illness etc.

Further people rather go to their pastor, most of them who are not experienced in human behaviour, and get half baked biblically assumed answers. Thereby pushing many Nigerians deep into the well of ignorance. We have the pastors... Who needs a psychologist. If their child is stubborn, rather than taking the child to a child psychologist who will, through observation and interrogation understand what is wrong, they would go to the pastor to help them cast out the demon in the child. The child is threatened with hell. Sometimes this works but most times we just bread children who supress their desires and end up having teenagers with identity crisis who will end up expressing the supress desires by indiscriminately involving in sex and other social vices.

Hmmm why am I ranting... Anyway... I just want to register my presence.

grin. Really Kemmer h.o.d. Wow. In my time the h.o.d was oguntuashe. Mar-k as we fondly called him thought us physiological psychology or so. He was also the dean of the faculty. Mrs ojo was my project supervisor. Hmmmmmn lipsrsealed. In my time, everybody dreaded Mrs ojo. My project topic was the influence of physical attraction and past experiences on choice of spouse among contemporary youths. And I fell under that woman.

In my defense. It was crayyyyyyy. Had two professors and another lecturer. Forgotten his name now. The dean himself, Prof Fagboungbe and the lecturer. I stayed longer than normal and people were getting scared not knowing my defense was more of an interaction. God was on my side that day. Got a b. Not possible to get an A where u have two professors grin when I was talking they must have been looking at me like a chicken. They also play good cop, bad cop. Just to scare u. One or two might be against u while the other will side u or even help u answer some tough questions. They watch your body language, eye contact. Etc.

please is Mr akinfala back? That is one of the most handsome lecturer I have ever known. kiss

This is why I'll be visiting my daughter's school on Friday. The teacher's been threatening her with hell for every little thing she does and she repeats it. If her cousins run in the house she tells them her teacher says they'll go to hell, etc, this is just a 3yr old girl oh. I'm in my final year, with the urge to have a masters degree in clinical or developmental psychology. I can't let anybody turn my daughter to something else. Caution her when she goes wrong, not threaten her with hell.

Psychology of reasoning

There are several alternative theories of the cognitive processes that human reasoning is based on. One view is that people rely on a mental logic consisting of formal (abstract or syntactic) inference rules similar to those developed by logicians in the propositional calculus. Another view is that people rely on domain-specific or content-sensitive rules of inference. A third view is that people rely on mental models, that is, mental representations that correspond to imagined possibilities. The mental model theory is the subject of the mental models website A fourth view is that people compute probabilities. One controversial theoretical issue is the identification of an appropriate competence model, or a standard against which to compare human reasoning. Initially classical logic was chosen as a competence model.Subsequently some researchers opted for non-monotonic logic and Bayesian probability. Research on mental models and reasoning has led to the suggestion that people are rational in principle but err in practice. Connectionist approaches towards reasoning have also been proposed. Consciousness is NOT Personality

According to Gerald M. Edelman, "Consciousness is neither a thing nor a simple property." Edelman has asserted that a fundamental property of consciousness is that it cannot be broken down into independent components. That is to say, consciousness is integrated within the brain, and involves many widely separated areas. In this model, consciousness is not a location but a process. Personality is the acquired pattern of response to the environment by agreement between both hemispheres and requires no conscious involvement.

While we have learned much about the specific regions of the brain and their functions, we have not discovered the location of the "command center" where the "I" and "Me" resides. It is apparent that most of what happens in our mind is automatic, or reactive in that it can function with little or no consciousness. What we know of as "consciousness" is looking like a passive observer of elaborate and efficient mind systems.

Re: Psychology Graduates Lets Meet Here by DrObi: 11:39am On Jul 11, 2015
Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by dramatic, emotional behavior, which is in the same category as antisocial and borderline personality disorders.

Narcissistic personality disorder symptoms may include:

Believing that you're better than others .Fantasizing about power, success and attractiveness .Exaggerating your achievements or talents
Expecting constant praise and admiration .Believing that you're special and acting accordingly .Failing to recognize other people's emotions and feelings .Expecting others to go along with your ideas and plans .Taking advantage of others .Expressing disdain for those you feel are inferior
Being jealous of others. Believing that others are jealous of you ,Trouble keeping healthy relationships .Setting unrealistic goals .Being easily hurt and rejected .Having a fragile self-esteem .Appearing as tough-minded or unemotional .Although some features of narcissistic personality disorder may seem like having confidence or strong self-esteem, it's not the same. Narcissistic personality disorder crosses the border of healthy confidence and self-esteem into thinking so highly of yourself that you put yourself on a pedestal. In contrast, people who have healthy confidence and self-esteem don't value themselves more than they value others.

When you have narcissistic personality disorder, you may come across as conceited, boastful or pretentious. You often monopolize conversations. You may belittle or look down on people you perceive as inferior. You may have a sense of entitlement. And when you don't receive the special treatment to which you feel entitled, you may become very impatient or angry. You may insist on having "the best" of everything — the best car, athletic club, medical care or social circles, for instance.

You have to be strong and direct your goal because Psychology is a difficult profession , is better to take medicine than Psychology because they have got direct treatment plan whereas Psychologist use systematical formulation to treat patients . Be strong .
