[b]As Pete rushed into the inner room to get a receipt he had forged earlier, Cynthia noticed a paper just below her feet. It was overturned such that the blank surface was facing up. She picked it up and saw Henry's picture there. It was the original version.

"What!" Cynthia screamed. "I thought he said he has turned over a new leaf!"

Pete whistled back into the room and showed Cynthia the receipt.

"Can you see?" he said. "I bought this trophy last year."

"True that Pete, but why do you have to make those posters you pasted around the school? Haven't you turned over a new chapter in your life?"

"What do you mean?" Pete whispered.

"See this!" Cynthia said, showing him the paper. "What's this doing under your table?"

"Em...er...uhn..." Pete was stuttering. He couldn't utter a meaningful statement.

"I told you, Pete, we should turn over a new leaf, didn't I? Leave Henry alone, let him be! For Chrissake, how many times had Henry and Susie intruded into our affair? Imagine, throughout last year we were just on their matter, bringing Jessica and Chun tao into it. Let sleeping dogs lie Pete!"

Cynthia was weeping. With sincerity, she just needed the whole scuffle to stop. She was fed up with plotting evil.

Pete could still not find his voice. Cynthia shook him and said, "What do you have to say?"

"I--em, it's a mistake; I promise that's gonna be my last."

"Better it is," Cynthia said and turned her face away. She faced Pete again and said, "How sure an I that that trophy isn't the one Henry's gonna be expelled for?"

"Cynthia, I swear on my life, I bought the trophy!" Pete lied.

"From where?"

Pete was taken aback by Cynthia's question. However, he came up with a lie:

"Arizona."

"As much as I know, you don't have enough money, so how come you could purchase this?"

"Em...I...I'm sorry Cynthia, I haven't told you this..." Pete said pretentiously. Cynthia asked, "What's that?"

"I've been saving all the cash you've been spending on me for a better future for both of us. You know something Cynthia? I was scared of our future--you know, scared of everything about it--how do I take care of you when we eventually get married? I'm not rich as you can see, yet I don't want to be a burden to your family...I've gotta pay the bills, bring up our children, take care of the home and do like a father..."

Pete swallowed his spittle. He continued:

"Such fear drove me into gambling. I thought I could just hit a million dollar and then quit gambling, then we'd live a happy married life on such, but no, luck was just frowning at me all the time. I...I..."

Pete saw Cynthia shedding tears. He continued:

"I...I had to quit gambling when you asked me to, then I--I began to save every penny I get from you..."

"You did all that for us?" Cynthia was lost in emotion, her nose pouring out some watery mucus.

"Yes Cynthia, for our future," said Pete. "I was twice lost Cynthia, and you must forgive me...Jessica, she made me lose my reasoning and I followed her...I'm sorry. For that girl Cassy you saw with me in the casino that night, I took such step when you shut your door against me because I lost out in the basketball. But as you can see, I quit the relationship with her cos I couldn't just stop thinking 'bout y-you..."

Cynthia had gripped her. She swallowed it all, believing every bit of Pete's story.

"I...I'm more at fault Pete," Cynthia sobbed. "No matter what, I shouldn't have left you cos of your failure."

" 'tis my weakpoint, Cynthia--I'll try work on the way I speak."

Pete excused himself and soon returned with a receipt. It was a forged receipt of the trophy.

"Here, Cynthia, the receipt," he gave her.

Cynthia was more than convinced at the sight of the trophy. It seemed original to him.

Cynthia cleared her eyes. She soon depart to her home.

"Yes! I got her!" Pete banged his hand on his chest and grinned. "Henry will smell hell!"[/b]
