NFF had earlier tabled a budget of over N5billion for the busy year 2014. It is far greater than the N1.2billion it received to run 2013.

FeverRay: One of d reasons y Nigerian Football won't develop is because of Govt interference, nice one FIFA

I beg to differ! Africa is not as advanced as the Europeans where you have strong institutions that can solely sponsor football. Government sponsors football in African countries, so there's no way govt cannot interfere.

When FIFA wants to host an event in a country, they still meet the government and plead for coperation; they plead for venues, security and others! Yet they don't want government to interfere with football!

Nonsense!

The worst thing is that they will be the first to say nigeria is corrupt, now we are trying to track down the corrupt ones in sports, they suspend us.

thegoodjoehunt: The truth is that the Federal Government should remove their hands totally from Football. No more pumping of money from the Federal Government into the NFF. So this nonsense should stop.

But where is the evidence that FG has anything to do with this.

Nigeria should take FIFA to court for bullying and include CAF in the suit. FIFA and CAF should also be compelled to stay action while the suit is determined. Our right to take part in all competition must be honoured while the suit is being determined!

Where is the evidence of Government interference here?

What is FIFA asking the Nigerian government to do do? That Government should overturn the verdict of the court? Are we not a Nation of laws?

If FIFA does not like the pronouncement of the court they can come to Abuja and challenge it on behalf of Maigari and his gang.

Honestly this is ridiculous!

Look here Blatter, our federation officials are involved in corruption indictments and other charges, are you saying that because they are FIFA officials, they are above our national law and should not be tried?
the govt could have prosecuted them without interfering with the nff

LMAyedun: FIFA suspends Nigeria

The FIFA Emergency Committee has decided Wednesday to suspend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect, on account of government interference. Article 13, par. 1 and article 17, par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes oblige member associations to manage their affairs independently and with no influence from third parties.

The decision follows a letter sent by FIFA to the NFF on 4 July, in which it expressed its great concern after the NFF was served with court proceedings and consequently an order preventing the president of the NFF, the NFF Executive Committee members and the NFF Congress from running the affairs of Nigerian football was granted by a High Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The said court order compelled the Nigerian Minister of Sports, Tamino Danagogo to appoint a senior member of the civil service to manage the NFF until the matter was heard in court, without giving any date for such a hearing. The authorities then appointed a person who decided to convene an extraordinary general assembly on 5 July 2014. This extraordinary general assembly was convened in violation of the NFF statutes.

Originally, an elective congress had been planned by the NFF to take place on 26 August 2014.

The suspension will be lifted once the court actions have been withdrawn and the properly elected NFF Executive Committee, the NFF general assembly and the NFF administration are able to work without any interference in their affairs.

As a result of this decision, no team from Nigeria of any sort (including clubs) can have any international sporting contact (art. 14 par. 3 of the FIFA Statutes). During the period of suspension, the NFF may not be represented in any regional, continental or international competitions, including at club level, or in friendly matches.

The most immediate effect is that Nigeria will not be entitled to participate in the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (5-24 August 2014) should the suspension not be lifted by 15 July 2014.

In addition, neither the NFF nor any of its members or officials may benefit from any FIFA or CAF development programmes, courses or training during the suspension period.

Pfft don't understand why FIFA promote corruption - how can you ban a nation that removed people from power due to being corrupt. The government provides the football federation with billions of Naira and they mis-use it.

How can they ask the government not to interfere when they are a clear major stakeholder?!

Doesn't make sense, how a football regulatory body can overrule the law of the land.

Nigeria should not bow down to this rubbish. We are trying to fix football and FIFA is using colonial mentality so we do not progress in football.

I think FIFA need to review its status concerning africa and government intervention in football related matters. Its so disturbing that FIFA didn't say anything when the nigerian government airlifted millions of dollars to the nigerian team at the WC but when the same government want to know why it has pumped a whole lot of money into our football and the international disgrace of the the players holding the nation to ransom at the WC reared its ugly head. In nigeria the NFA can't even sustain on its own(they can't find sponsors for our league).so if the ban will help us reshuffle our football then let it stand. Nothing happened in 1996 and 1998. To me it might just be the blessing in disguise we require.

To support is very different from to interfere. Africa does have people, NGOs and other bodies who are capable of supporting Football, but most of them don't do it because what they will get for their money is heartbreak and lacklustre performance by the teams. When government funds, it doesn't mean it should dictate the affairs of the body. That's exactly what Nigerian govt is doing, it want to control the activities of NFF, if u remember, Nig escaped being banned cos of dis same issue few yrs back

Its simple,No foresight for the future (NFF) is embedded in corruption as history have it,it will continue to be until they hand over to retired professional like jayjay, etc.thats d way it supposed to be.this Falconets will pain me if they dont participate.was already following the team.wonder hw the cash will flow now with the ban.

There's no way govt won't interfere with the affairs of football since govt are the sole sponsors. He who pays the piper dictates the tune. Most African countries are solely sponsored by govt; Nigeria only gets tokens from glo when they qualify for a major competition. You remember the case of Ghana govt flying dollars to Brazil via a jet for its players. When that sort of money is embezzled and not accounted for, the govt will definitely hold the culprits responsible.

The bottom line remains that FiFA should understand African football and take into account that govt solely sponsors the football governing body; and as such, there's no way it won't interfere.

If the NFF is totally independent of govt, then FIFA's action could somewhat be justified. FIFA could have instead, banned the official who took NFF to court.

After 2010 world cup FIFA suspension, after 2014 world cup FIFA suspension. This country is just upsetting. Our constitution that guarantees that we can never get the right people into office on merit and thus paving the way for compromise and consequently corruption. We are gripped in viscious cycle spiralling out of control and heading for the rocks. Too bad. What happens to the promising squad of U17 players who won the world cup and were expected to graduate, another bright generation going.....going........going.....

league last season and will even mention the name
Re: FIFA Suspends Nigeria by cocoduck: 9:17pm On Jul 09, 2014
If this is the price we have to pay to have a good local league so be it. NFF is Nigerian football's biggest enemy. just go and ask random Nigerian youngster to mention 10 football clubs in Nigeria they cannot do that. But if you ask them to mention that of BPL they would mention all the clubs that were in the premier league last season and will even mention the names of players in various BPL clubs.
I want Nigerian football league to be as good as at least that of Mexico or brasil. with interesting salaries and stadia and kits. I am tired of European football.
