Once upon a time when there was no Boko Haram, when sim cards were like a prized possesion, when Nokia 3310 can't be pocketed cos it may remove your trouser, when Motorola is recognized by its ringing tone, in came phones first the dumb phones followed by feature phones.

Back then the popular phones were known as " Belgium" or second hand phones and some semi-smartphones like the Symbian, usually referred to as "show case phones" because they are displayed in glass casing. The show case phones were cheap considering its features. Infact the latest phones can be found among the show case phones. Was there no new phones? There was! Brand new phones were available too but they were expensive when compared to the prize of the second hand phones, infact most second hand phones were not only feature-rich they last long too.

Many users back then took this phones for granted and many still do today, why? ignorance one may conclude. But have you thoughtfully thought about those phones in the sense I'm challenging you to think now? what do you really know about those used second hand phones except they have been used? Here are the obvious
- those phones have been used
- they were packaged and shipped down to Africa at large and Nigeria in particular
- those that are sellable were in good state when they were packaged.
- some were given a make over once in Nigeria (repairs, change of casing, and polishing)

those are the obvious, but here is the question.
How did those phones come to Africa as used phones? At first glance the answer may seem obvious. Ahaa! What the heck is this guy asking didn't they just package and ship it here? Simple answer, but the real answer is more complicated than that.

Those phones were imported from the "white man's" land, prior to that they were used by the "white men and women" yet when they dropped it or discarded it, they didn't do it in a state of complete disrepair, those phones were sound when they decided to call it quit, some even used those phones for 4yrs, 5years, 10years, some used theirs 11yrs plus yet no shaking.

How did they manage this feat? Was it magic? Juju or what?

Let's come back home, this are the days of Android, Windows, iOS, BB, the days of dumb phones, and even feature phones are now behind us. We are now in the real smartphone age. And we don't buy second hand or used smartphones anym ore(atleast majority of us don't, afterall there is always a Tecno), we get the new ones. Things are far better off now than then, but ask yourself how long have used your brand new phone without repairing or changing it? I bet the highest I can get is 1year. Why can't we imitate the white folks and use our phones for years, and when leaving it we leave it sound and in good "health".

The truth is we can't do that unless we know the Magic. Yes the White folks use magic to maintain their phones. A magic that is based in science, they STUDY their smartphones so as not to KILL it, if you neglect to study your phone the end result is killing it.

How do you Study your smartphone?

Check this scenerio

1. An American who is tech saavy buys a phone, comes back home, sits down opens it and first of all reads the phone manual A-Z, before he starts using it.

2. A Tech saavy Nigerian buys a phone comes back home and start using the phone without reading the manual. If you ask him he will say that he has been using phones all his life. Does it mean the American hasns't been using a phone all his life? The American acknowledges that producers of that phone took time and effort to write the manual for people to read, he also knows that no matter how knowlegable he is he can't know everything.

The American and the Nigerian who really stand a better chance of maintain his phone?

One thing I've found out in Tech is even the minute detail can make a big difference.

For e.g each time you take you phone close to a petrol station your phone is at risk, small small it will be radiating emission that decreases the life span of that phone, as absurd as this may sound you've already been warned! Even the Manual that most Nigerians neglect to read warns you of this. There are many of this details that I'll be pointing out next time, but meanwhile here are some resources to get you started. When it come to reading online agreement you have to use dicernment, granted reading the agreement may seem daunting. Just look at the device you're buying and the store you're getting it from if its trusted you may skip it, but if its not you've to read the whole thing if you're determined to get it through that store.

But we dy talk about how we fit mantain our smartphone
