Alright thanks a lot. I created this thread because I need a specialist for servicing.
But yesterday something quite unfortunate happened
I was just driving and suddenly the clutch of the car (golf 4 manual 2.0L engine) just got soft and the gear refused to engage. I somehow managed 2 get it off d road and I turned off d engine. After sometime I started it again. This time the brake was totally hard and wasn't working. Clutch was also still soft and gear wasn't engaging. Don't know what to do now. Pls can someone out here help me out? Just drop ur number I'll call or anyone can post a useful comment here
Need to know what to do pls. Called my hubby and he suggested I check d brake oil which I did and it was ok(I think so) Pls I need advice people. I'm calling most especially on Siena for this help
Thanks

Hey mr Siena I see you viewing this thread.

Re: I Need A Volkswagen Specialist / Mechanic by Nobody: 10:47pm On Aug 10, 2014
The clutch pedal can go soft (lack resistance) for different reasons:

01) Leaking clutch master cylinder (above pedal assembly).
02) Leaking clutch slave cylinder (on front of gearbox).
03) Broken clutch fork (in gearbox bellhousing).
04) Broken clutch pressure plate.
05) No hydraulic fluid in combined clutch and brake resovoir.

I'm not sure if I'm too late responding here. I've got some questions of my own to ask though:

a) Are you able to engage gears with the engine switched off?
b) Is there any sign of hydraulic fluid in the driver's foot well?
c) Has the hydraulic fluid level dropped noticeably?
d) Is there any sign of fluid leakage at the driver's side front of the car? (Most likely on the ground where parked).
e) Has there been any difficulty in engaging any gears prior to failure, especially reverse?
f) Has there been any instance of the clutch slipping prior to failure?

Your brake pedal going hard, I would treat as a separate issue. A hard brake pedal, that barely goes down when depressed usually indicates a bad brake servo, or the servo vacuum feed pipe (from the intake manifold) is either disconnected, split, or the one-way valve in the line has failed.

Wow!!! A lot of huge grammar I've never heard before and certainly don't understand. But I'm thinking number 5 might be the reason cos d other things stated don't just seem to be the problem. I'll buy brake fluid tomorrow and give my friend to help me put it, then id let you know what's up
Thanks a lot Siena. You're quite knowledgeable. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

No worries, Elbedso. Let's see how you get on, then we can take things from there.

Helloooo Siena! I did get the brake fluid and had it put in and gradually the clutch came back to normal and the gear too! It's all working fine now, except from a sorta creaking noise the clutch makes when I depress it, but I reckon that might be minor??
Re: I Need A Volkswagen Specialist / Mechanic by Nobody: 10:48pm On Aug 11, 2014
Hi Elbedso!

Glad you've made some headway, and we've at least pin pointed the cause of your Golf IV's issues.

Yes, filling the combined brake and clutch hydraulic fluid reservoir will gradually get drawn through the clutch slave cylinder, restoring clutch operation, and of course, allowing gears to be engaged with the engine running.

However, your mechanic needs to bleed the clutch AND the brakes. It's not sufficient just to let gravity push the fluid round. If the reservoir has run low, allowing air to get drawn into the brake and clutch circuits, the air will NOT self-purge. Bleeding is required.

I'm also concerned with the fluid level dropping. How low was it? Because a leak in the clutch master or slave cylinder is still a possibility. Both systems are sealed, the level will only drop marginally to compensate for brake pad wear. In most cases, the hygroscopic nature of hydraulic fluid (the tendency of the fluid to absorb moisture from the atmosphere) will actually cause the level to rise, or at least remain stable.

You mechanic needs to check for fluid leaks.

Hi
My car is a golf3, every morning after starting my car normally it runs for a minute then jerks and stop. I have to restart the car serval times and everytime it jerk to stop. Eventually it runs smoothly and I can drive off. Park it 2hrs later same problem again.

Its like every time the engine cools my golf needs serval starts to run smoothly. Now I'm told to buy a manual caburettor for 25k. Help this lady out guys, I don't want to be cheated.

Please, ignore those guys that are ill-advising you to convert your fuel-injected Volkswagen Golf to run with a carburettor. Your engine will never run right, it is NOT optimised for carburettor fuelling.

Your Volkswagen Golf III is OBD compliant. I would get the system scanned, rather than go with guesswork.

thank you responding so promptly.

Sir my car a Passat 1997 wagon is almost driving me crazy, I changed the tyres few months ago, I decided to make the car look sleek, so I used the conventional tyres in the front and two bigger tyres at the back, and ever since I have had to change my wheel bearings in the back for over 5 times any time I make a long trip. Could the size of the tyre affect the wheel bearings?
