There is something called delayed gratification. Time for everything. That they were been restricted did not stop them from doing great things

It is abnormal to restrict normal adults, especially in a citadel of learning that is supposedly a gate way to greater responsibilities and decisions making. I will understand if they were in high schools or reformatory institution.

Federal Civil Service Understudies CU, Plans Collaboration

Federal Civil Service Understudies CU, Plans Collaboration
Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Charles K. Ayo making his remarks at the meeting

The Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation has visited Covenant University, based on her leadership antecedents among universities in the country, to understudy her management system and seamless succession policy.
A three-man fact-finding team, headed by the Deputy Director, Leadership and Management Succession Planning Department of the Office, Mr. Danjuma Elabi, was received by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Korede Ayo and the Management team in his conference-room on Wednesday, January 15, 2014.

Mr. Elabi stated that the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) was recently restructured to make it compact for effective service delivery. This, according to him, led to the establishment of his department which was to ensure leadership succession planning.

He said that the mission of his team was information sourcing and data gathering. “Being a new department, we are going round to gather information and learn from experience. Your university was picked by the Head of Civil Service himself to represent all the private universities because of your antecedents and the fact that you have cut a niche for yourself”, he explained.

He requested for information on the university’s leadership and management style, adding that they would want to learn how succession is done in an academic environment.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayo, in his response, explained that Covenant University considered herself a leadership varsity founded to revolutionize the higher education context in the continent with the vision to raise a new generation of leaders.

He noted that in order to actualize the vision, the university pioneered some unique programmes from inception which include Entrepreneurial Development Studies, a programme designed to address unemployment and youths’ restiveness.

Others are “Total Man Concept” (TMC), which addresses the development of the three components that make up a man, vis-a-vis, spirit, soul and body and “Towards a Total Graduate” (TTG), which prepares the students for life after school.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that leadership was the challenge of the nation and Africa in general. He added that no nation can develop in an environment devoid of transparency, integrity and responsibility; these values are embedded in the University’s Core Values.

The University, according to the Vice-Chancellor, strongly upholds her Core Values and frowns on any form of disregard of these Core Values, a development which has helped to entrench leadership traits in her products. This has also distinguished her graduates and endeared them to the hearts of employers.

Professor Ayo informed the team that the leadership qualities in the university’s Alumni have made some of them occupy Management positions including that of Registrar, Dean and Directors in the university within the eleven years of her existence.

The Vice-Chancellor promised that the university would continue to contribute her part in training leaders for the continent through her African Leadership Development Centre which is due for take-off in February this year.

He enjoined them to collaborate with the Centre to have their senior officers trained in the art of leadership.

Professor Ayo later presented documents to them to enhance their knowledge about the university.

Present at the meeting were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Taiwo Abioye; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor A. A. A. Atayero; Registrar, Mr. Olumuyiwa Oludayo; Director, Financial Services, Pastor Deji Okubanjo; Director Physical Planning and Development, Arc Gbenga Alalade; Director, Centre for Systems and Information Services, Pastor Abolade Afolabi and Dean, Students’ Affairs, Mr. Azubuike Ezenwoke.

ACCA to Partner with CU

ACCA to Partner with CU
Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Charles K. Ayo, making his remarks at the meeting

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is planning a working partnership with Covenant University. According to its Students’ Support Manager, ACCA Nigeria, Mr. Joseph Udoh, the University is one of the selected 10 reputable institutions the group would be working with.
Mr. Udoh made this known during a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor on Thursday, February 20, 2014.

The Student Support Manager noted that the Association would also work with the Department of Accounting for professional accreditation of the programme and possible increase in the number of exempted courses in ACCA examination from the present three.

He opined that this would increase the number of prospective students seeking admission to study Accounting in Covenant University.

Mr. Udoh added that the partnership would afford the Association the opportunity to work with the students and register them for ACCA for free.

This, according to him, would give students who may want to develop a career in Accounting, the opportunity to attend the Association’s Summit, and acquire practical knowledge which would help them in the practice.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Business Relationship Manager, who is a graduate of Covenant University, Mr. Kehinde Oluwadare, noted that the Association and leading Accounting Firm are in need of the products of Covenant University because of their spiritual and moral training.

The Head of Department of Accounting, Dr. Francis Iyoha was particularly happy that a product of Covenant University is doing well at ACCA and expressed his joy at the planned partnership of the Association with CU.

The Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Charles Ayo was also glad to see his former student in Computer and Information Science doing well in ACCA.

He said that the mission that brought them to the University is in line with what the University preaches.

Covenant University Consolidates ICT With e-Learning Platform

Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor A.A.Atayero making his remarks at the programme.
Three years after emerging as the Best ICT driven University in West Africa, Covenant University within her 11 years of existence has adopted one of the defining teaching platforms in the world that gives faculty and students of the University access to academic tools and resources anytime and anywhere.
Between 2008 and 2012, the University’s e-learning platform was on the test run phase, basically devoted for periodic course continuous assessment and professional certification examination that the University was conducting, but it has evolved over the past one year into a platform that every member of the University, particularly the academic section of the community have come to embrace.
The last year has seen a revolutionized learning and teaching environment in Covenant University, since the adoption of the Moodle teaching platform, otherwise known as Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
The Moodle system of learning and lecture delivery has been roundly embraced with over 450,500 activities, with a projection that by the commencement of the Omega and Summer Semesters of the current academic session, the Virtual Learning Environment of the University would have attracted as much as 2.5 million activities.
Today, students of the University can all go online to receive lecture notes, do assignment and quiz in the form of tutorials, especially when reviewing topics. They are now enjoying greater dimension of engagement with their lecturers. The lecturers in turn are using forums platform to communicate with their students.
Covenant University has been steadfastly committed to driving educational excellence via the deployment of Information and Communication Technologies in advancing quality delivery of education. The current Management of the University has shown enormous commitment to the usage of e-learning in the quest of the University fulfilling her Vision 10:2022, which is to become one of the ten leading world-class universities in the next ten years.
The University has also started the process of developing Covenant University Open Course Ware (CUOCW). The development of the CUOCW began with lecture notes being uploaded, the advancement and improvement in standardizing teaching format and delivery system, as well as having access to a broadcast YouTube channel. When all these elements are synchronized, lectures would be captured and attached to teaching materials that was made use of during the specific class.
This is also preparing her capabilities for distant learning, which is the direction of the future of modern day education. Covenant University is already preparing for this in view of her march to becoming a global relevant brand name in the dispensing of quality education. The Management of the University looks forward to attracting students across the world to learn and grow in knowledge through this e-learning platform.
The target of the University is to have a functional and quality Course Ware running in the shortest possible time in key areas of learning and subsequent update as other courses delivery are standardized and uploaded.
The University, which has won numerous ICT related awards, is raising the stakes in education delivery system, by displaying through the Virtual Learning Environment the quality of contents and relevance of teaching materials the students are exposed to.
The new teaching platform would be of enormous benefits to parents and guardians, in the sense that they are able to see, track and evaluate what their wards are being taught in school. Furthermore, the parents could also ask questions and get clarification on courses from time to time. All they have to do is goggle ‘learn.covenantuniversity.edu.ng’, input the course code and access the course material.

Zero tolerance on phone is classes or during lectures, I accept, but to completely ban the use of phones inside the university is too draconian and ill-thought of.

1) How would you communicate with your friends and families? Communication is an essential social human skill and no group of people should be denied that fundamental right... How would I share private and confidential issues with my family?

2) Mobile technology is itself educative and exploring its uses would only make CU's student conversant with an ever evolving and innovative technology... While their mates in progressive countries are building mobile apps, ( that could solve societal problems and make them wealthy entrepreneurs), they are being restricted instead.

3) In an academic institution, you want to bring people together and mobile technology enhances that it happens. If I stumble on a mathematical solution in my hostel, does the University authorities want me to walk miles to my friend's hostel to share the knowledge with him? The energy I would use to walk might be used to make further discoveries instead.

In fact, globalization we see in the world 2day is thanks to mobile technology because you want ideas to travel easily and without hindrance. University of course is the best place to start.

University of Johannesburg Management Visits Covenant University
The two Vice-Chancellors exchanging pleasantries after the meeting

A 13-man delegation from the University of Johannesburg, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ihron Rensburg, paid a working visit to Covenant University, in a bid to seek out platforms for establishing research clusters.
The Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Charles Korede Ayo and other members of Management, received the team in his Conference room on Tuesday, September 24, 2013.

In his opening remarks, stating reasons for the visit, Professor Rensburg commended the Management of Covenant University for the smart and intellectual components of her programmes. He noted that Covenant University’s brand inspired their desire for collaboration.

According to him, “University of Johannesburg is a product of a merger, we are a young university and we are encouraged by the progress that Covenant University has made. We are encouraged by your ambition, obviously informed by your deep commitment, your doggedness and in fact your emergence out of a deep belief system.”

Vice-Chancellor, Covenant University, Professor Charles K. Ayo making his remarks at the meeting

Professor Rensburg, who also chairs’ Southern African Regional Universities Association, said they were at Covenant University to hear and learn, directly from the source, what moves, inspires, and drives its ambition, as well as the University is able to capture, influence, and achieve the kind of reverence that the University commands. He stated further that University of Johannesburg was visiting Covenant University to explore, dialogue and learn how both Universities can grow, taking into account their young status.

He further noted that University of Johannesburg also has something that could be of use to Covenant University in her vision of becoming 1 of 10 in 10. According to him, “We have not come to take, but also to give back, as this is what would make the relationship mutual.”

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Charles Korede Ayo commended the efforts of the team from University of Johannesburg, for the great work they are doing that have seen the university ranked among the top 4% of universities in the world.

Registrar, Covenant University, Mr. Olumuyiwa Fadugba introducing members of CU Management to the visitors at the meeting

According to him, that was a businesslike approach to doing things and such feat could not have been attained by just folding of arms and wishing. He added that such model was worth looking into by Covenant University. Professor Ayo told the guests that since Covenant University is running with a vision to be listed among the 10 best universities within the next 10 years, there is the need to explore diverse models.

He told the gathering that the vision of the University is raising a new generation of leaders and as a result, the University, under the guidance and support of its Proprietor-base have been able to be the first on a number of fronts in her short span of existence.

The Professor of Computer Science & MIS informed the august Assembly that the University’s abolition of the award of a Pass Degree and the introduction of Entrepreneurial Development Studies as a general course in the University, has become entrenched in national education policy in Nigeria. With this in mind, he posited that though the task might look intimidating, but it is very attainable taking into account the accomplishments of the University.

A cross section of University of Johannesburg Management at the meeting

In the area of research, Professor Ayo stated that Covenant University was birthed out of the desire to bring solutions to certain issues that have plagued Nigeria and the black man, and as such the vision, mission and mandate of the University becomes very crucial in running the race of rewriting the story of higher education in Nigeria.

Making allusion to the words of the Chancellor, Dr. David Oyedepo, Professor C.K. Ayo noted that, ‘It doesn’t have to be white for it to be right.’ According to him, “Looking at the of the challenges we are faced with as Africans, we are all dependent on foreign solutions to sort our issues. It becomes imperative to ask ourselves, what are we doing as Universities? What are we doing as Research Centers?” He queried.

That is why the passion of the Chancellor is geared towards ensuring that Covenant University should stop at nothing until we begin to unravel the mysteries surrounding the underdevelopment of Africa. It has come to the point that we should not be dependent on the developed world for solutions to the myriads of problems facing the continent, he explained.

Director, International Office and Linkages, Dr. Sheriff Folarin directing proceedings at the meeting

The team later visited various Colleges, Schools and Departments in the University and indicated some areas of interest to foster collaborations with Covenant University. Some regions of interest to University of Johannesburg are research programmes in Plant Biotechnology and Botany, Sustainable Building Materials, Green and Healthy Building Technology, Waste Management and Recycling, Entrepreneurship and Human Capital Development, and staff exchange programme involving visiting professors and research associates from both universities.

Present at the meeting were the Registrar, Mr. Olumuyiwa Fadugba, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Dr. Taiwo Abioye, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor AAA. Atayero, Dean, College of Science and Technology, Professor Cleophas Loto, Dean, College of Development Studies, Professor Isaiah Olurinola.

Others are, Director, Center for Systems and Information Services, Pastor Stephen Ogah, Director, International Office and Linkages, Dr. Sheriff Folarin, and members of the Corporate and Public Affairs Unit of the University.
