Now read this and ask yourself if we couldn't have implemented this since April.

Nigeria airport steps up Ebola screening measures

Wednesday 6 August 2014 05:50 REUTERS

Nigeria's Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos has stepped up its health screening measures after the nation's second Ebola case was confirmed on Monday.

The country's health minister, Onyebuchi Chukwu, said one of the doctors who treated Nigeria's first official case of Ebola has contracted the virus. The doctor treated Liberian citizen Patrick Sawyer, who was diagnosed with the virus when he arrived in Lagos on July 20 and who died of the disease five days later.

Lagos airport is now clearly on alert. Passengers are screened to determine whether their body temperature is abnormal. Authorities say arrangements have been put in place to detect anyone coming into Nigeria with the Ebola virus.

"What we do is, the airlines must first, at the point of departure, ensure that they do not board passengers with the ailment. And on arrival here, even before the arrival, we have the manifest of the passengers that are coming, and they have forms to fill as they arrive," said Yakubu Datti, general manager of corporate communications, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

"We have a medical team from the ministry of health under the port services that inspects their medical history and also have some equipment where they check without having personal contact. And all that is done on arrival even before the immigration.“

And if there is any suspicious passenger, the passenger goes to this holding area, which we have provided for further investigation, or interrogation. After which, if it is established that he's a carrier, we have a quarantine area where the patient will be quarantined for necessary action," Datti continued.

Nigerian authorities have been running a media campaign to inform people about Ebola and what to do to avoid it. Following the confirmation of Nigeria's second case of the virus, that campaign may be intensified.

There was absolutely nothing stopping us from doing this in April.

Contact them, find their challenges and help them overcome it fast.

thegoodjoehunt3: Protecting it from spreading is a means of shielding and not exposing. If we had done that earlier, it would not spread the way it has.

No one is saying do not protect the people but the most effective step is the most critical.

And that critical and effective step is prevention..

Protecting your homeland is your number one duty and obligation including before other countries or entities.

The blockage from the source is the most critical. No matter how much protection is done at home, if the source leaks, the protection might be futile.

Why do you think China is sending specialist to Africa today. They have realised that stopping the spread is the most effective.

I hope other countries join.

Think about it this way, attack is the best form of defence (they are both important).

Obiagelli: when ebola broke out in April, the federal government lead by gej kept on looting while their sycophants kept hailing, today our lives as a whole is under threat, rather than put measures in place to prevent the virus from getting here, our minister of information claimed that the government has enough vaccines and medicines to deal with the situation. Read below.

www.thisdaylive.com/articles/no-ebola-fever-in-nigeria-says-fec/175178/

ollowing reports in some national dailies that Ebola
fever had been detected in Nigeria, Federal Executive
Council (FEC) Wednesday said the reports were
false as there was no Ebola fever in the country.
Briefing State House correspondents after the weekly
FEC meeting, Minister of Information, Labaran Maku
said Ministry of Health during the week under took
quick checks to verify these reports, adding that so
far all the tests showed clearly that there was no
Ebola fever in the country.
"Nigeria is prepared right now to curtail any outbreak
particularly given reports that few counties on the
West Coast like Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea
have reported cases of Ebola fever and given our
proximity to these countries Nigeria is ready, the
ministry has every precaution including getting with
vaccines and medicines to ensure that should there be
any incidence in Nigeria, everything would be dealt
with precision”, he said.

This clearly shows when this government says they are doing everything to bring the Chibok girls back or they are leaving no stone unturned to find sponsors of suicide bombings in reality they are busy sharing and drinking 'ogogoro' in Aso Rock.

The WHO got staffs, facilities, equipment and medicine there to help curtail the spread. Our government should have backed them financially to have more on ground.

Just like our government should back the Pharmaceutical companies now to get their experimental drugs to Africa now.

at that point he isn't contagious and should be under surveillance if from a risk region.

At that point, those scanning will not know he has the virus and would not be able to quarantine him. That is why massive meticulous testing at the source is the best step.

Coupled with the experimental drugs in place, meticulous testing and early treatment is the best way to go. If our government has 11 million dollars ready to fight the spread, they should back the bodies fighting the spread and the companies to fast track their clinical trials with the sick ones.

Lying was disgraceful. But, we cannot fold our arms and cry about mistakes of the past.

Our government should swing into action now. Support those with the science and infrastructure to fight this spread.

Get them to Nigeria to prevent an epidemic. Get more of them to the effected countries to prevent further exposure.

Better late than Never.

how about surveillance? How about directives to every hospital on what to look out for? The doctors at ikoyi would have been protected if the government had done enough sensitisation.

I recollect that the first time I came into Europe, foreigners from certain countries in the world including Nigerians were told to undergo a compulsory tuberculosis test. That is a country taking proactive steps. Not some nitwit quoting WHO here and there on this board.

GEJ and his incompetent team have failed Nigerians in being proactive. It should never have generated into this, and sadly it will degenerate further which is the ugly truth.

Doctors and nurses are already complaining of not being provided with medical kits that they can use to isolate Ebola victims. Hence they are not ready to expose themselves to unnecessary risks. While our incompetent dunce of a President and his lying ministers have been telling us since April that they havw the situation under control. Same lie as similar to Boko Haram.

This GEJ government is a disgrace to Africa amd the entire world.
