My name is Dyslexic Girl. I completed my nursery, primary and secondary education in Nigeria. Some few years back, I relocated to the UK with my twin. I just started a blog (see link below) less than a week ago, sharing my experience with people affected by dyslexia (and or dyspraxia) as a child as well as an adult and also anyone interested in broadening their knowledge on dyslexia and the impact it has on our activities of daily living.

Throughout my experience with education in Nigeria, I have being part of the very silly group, the olodo group. The group that should be more like the brain boxes in our class. The slowpoke group, you get the point. It is unfortunate that children are compared with one another, according to their intelligence and not according to what they are individually capable of achieving.
It gets worse when my twin sister is soo much better at everything and we are constantly compared to one another. I am yet to understand what my lack of knowledge has to do with me having a large forehead (physical stigma is a pain in the ass). I know everyone gets bullied, thats normal. However, when teachers loose their professionalism and bully student, it impacts on their developmental milestone and increases the fear of school which may lead to social anxiety for the child (see blog for references). Anyways, I was getting too emotional but you get the point lipsrsealed cheesy grin
Do you know what dyslexia is? (I am sure some or even most of you do, however, I stand corrected)

How is dyslexia assessed in children and adults in Nigeria?
Does beating cure dyslexia (chai the cane i received for not being able to answer questions on time was outrageous).

I was hoping I could get your point of view on dyslexia, as a student, parent, or a working individual. Also, does anyone amongst you suffer from dyslexia?

Thank you guys for your time.

These are one of the ill-treatments I faced, that example is not bad at all. I do not have ADHD, however, I am dyspraxic. Thank you for comment.

Hi, thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with the topic. If you feel you have nothing to gain or share, you may keep your comments to yourself. I never said Dyslexia was an ailment, it is a learning disability. Try using google to define your insults before posting them. Take care.

Definition - A general term for disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols, but that do not affect general intelligence.

@OP, considering the bolded part of the definition, coupled with the fact that you write like a pro, you have nothing to worry about. Just develop any skills you've got, or try to find other latent talents.

And no, your name is not Dyslexic Girl!!! wink

Op thanks for sharing The info. I came across that word dyslexia when I was watching this Indian movie acted by amir Khan of 3 idiots. The movie title is " like stars on earth " it was so touching that tears started flowing from my eyes.

The truth is when a child with dyslexia is spotted early they should be treated with care. and The most important think is that they always have intelligence that goes with that but when bullied each time they wouldn't answer a question quickly.

in that movie I was made to understand Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Abhishek Bechchan, Walt Disney were dyslexia victim yet they came out strong.

Op thanks for sharing I believe we can educate Nigerians on this.

please let's us watch this movie called "LIKE STARS ON EARTH" we will understand more of why people like op should not be ignored in The society.

Thank You for this.
I was exposed to Dylxesia early because an uncle brought his son to stay with us and even though he was far older he was made to be in the same class with me.
I watched him struggle, read so much and work so hard yet struggle with grades, while others would laugh I would defend him because I knew how hard he worked. Luckily my father picked on it and tutored him at his pace, when I see him today I am so happy because he is doing so well, I am so proud of him because despite all the taunting he never stopped working hard or gave up for a day.

Most Nigerians are ignorant of these issues, it is mostly attributed to spiritual attack, I am so happy you are doing this as someone who faced this would speak more practically than most of us and better still people will realise that it is not an "oyibo thing". It is just recently awareness on Autism is starting to gain grounds, the kind of flogging autistics suffered no be hear, ferrying from one place to the other for "deliverance"

Good Job dear

Hi smiley. It definitely does not affect general intelligence. If only I (and so many other students) were given the right boost and resources to succeed, we wouldn't be doomed to constant humiliation and useless punishments that doesn't make a difference to how to we process and analyse information.

Thank you for reading the blog! (If you did). Dyslexia is unfortunately not only about reading, writing and interpreting words and other symbols, it does more (I wish it didn't)..there is controversy and conflict in it's definition.

I know what I'm capable of now, hence the reason I am raising some awareness for parents, sisters, brothers and anyone that know a child (and, or adult) that might be slower in school, to help and support him her.

That wasn't the purpose of the thread. The purpose is to share our knowledge and raise some awareness of dyslexia...no one is expected to cry or be emotional tongue it is not a disease o.

I am happy he his doing so well...the flogging and constant taunting in Nigeria is just awful. If parents are aware that it exists then they can support their kids a lot more, instead of allowing some yeye uncles to beat the 'stupidity' out of some of us undecided
