Experimental Ebola drug which has helped stabilise US doctor is sent to Nigeria

Bloomberg news is reporting that the Ebola drug which has been given already to two Americans and a Spanish priest and which has helped stabilise them, has been sent to a West African country that requested it. That country is believed to be Nigeria. Now, according to the manufacturer of the drug, Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc., the supply of the drug called ZMapp is now exhausted.

Mapp Biopharmaceutical Inc. disclosed that it was told by U.S. health officials that the West African countries which were demanding for the drug were Nigeria and Liberia.

According to the company, all requests forwarded to it as regards supply of the drugs has been complied with, and at no cost so long as such a request was backed by legal and regulatory authorities. It said it provided the drug at no cost.

The problem is that the drug is just an experimental one that has not even been properly tested on animals or humans, leading many to question the ethics of the move and how patients could be monitored in the long term, in the event that they are negatively affected by the drug.

“It is our understanding that all patients offered treatment, treated, or expected to be treated were or are highly capable of providing informed consent for the use of an experimental drug not yet evaluated for safety in animals or people,” the company said in a statement.

The additional patients allocated the drug include medical doctors in two West African countries as well as the Americans and the Spanish priest.

The company said that it is working to quickly increase production of the drug.

“Additional resources are being brought to bear on scaling up,” the company said. “The emergency use of an experimental medicine is a highly unusual situation.”

I hope this news is solid. Good to know the manufacturer gave the serum out at no financial cost. The health ministry should fill us in with more details.

I pray this is true...I hav been imagining what thos infected and their families must be going through. Atleast with this serum there's hope. Curing those few that tested positiv will eradicate it from our populous nation

And you should know most of those people are the iboelas of Nigeria! In fact, I see some of them like kettykin saying that Russians and the British and not Nigeria beat them down some 40 + years ago, yet the praise the same Russians where blacks are routinely killed by racists and does nothing! Well they are sufferheads anyway.

People need to alive first before longtime adverse effects are noticed.

Why do I get this feeling this wouldn't be exactly thesame drugs that were given those white men

Call me a cynic or a conspiracy theorist, I get this queer feeling what is coming in is a modified version that could be used to genetically modify Africans perhaps make us dumber and perpetually under the thumb of the white man!!

Give it to a single member of the population of the species and have it spread throughout the population over the years!! Engineer it in such a manner it doesn't interact in thesame manner with the genes of whites.

As we keep begging for handouts from they, we should stop complaining when they try to shovel their policies (gay rights, etc) down our throats!!

Until our domestic scientists sit up and start creating home grown solutions to our problems, we would forever remain at the mercy of the Americans and Europeans! Only Africans themselves can have their own best interest at heart!! Anything else and what you get is a solution with a concealed bigger problem!!!

This news is fake cos it was liberia and not Nigeria.

That possibly explain the significant improvement in the health condition of the Nigerian ebola patients. But we should go into more research in finding our own local remedies.

Nonsense..... The world knows the drugs are being sent to only one African nation as things stand, and that is Sierra Leone.
