Most Drs on this forum are now talking about the effect of the resident lay off on patients, where were all these thoughts about the patients when they went on strike for ego reasons? If they are so concerned about patients, why did they not call off their strike when the nation was facing a national treat from ebola? You See, FG has taken the only option available to reason by Sacking all residents though i hope it shd be only for the time being. if ASUU had told FG that they want only their members to occupy the Posts of VC, DVCs, Registrar, Bursar etc plus that no other person should be promoted beyond level 14, they would still have been on strike . And I tell you, FG would have privatized all the universities because it would have been the only feasible option. For those who think that FG may be bluffing, REMEMBER SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI. A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE!!!! The real reason the Drs have continued on strike is because they want great things for themselves and beyond that, they want every other person in the health sector under their feet. FG met their demands almost completely. What else should the FG had done? Truth is that the welfare of patients and improvement of Health facilities are not on the Doctors mind any time! They have been going on strikes for how long now in the name of poor health facilities and each time they succeed in getting better pay or condition of service for themselves but not improved facilities. NIGERIANS ARE NOT FOOLS!!! A word of advice for the Doctors that are talking of bailing out to practice in UK. PLS MAKE SURE YOU INSTITUTE STRIKE ACTION IN THE UK WHEN; > You get there and find out that a other health workers are also consultants >you discover that the head of the hospital is not a Doctor >you discover that residents are considered as students and paid as such. Unlike in Nigeria where a resident doctor earns about the same with the highest earning nurse at the peak of his redidency. Consider yourself lucky if you earn at the peak of your residency what a starting nurse earns overseas. Why do you want to destroy NIGERIA? FG has taken so much crap from you guys (Drs). You only have to look at their reasons for going on strike to see that only a few of them may be reasonable. if majority were, they would not go on strike for some of those flimsy reasons I wish all resident Drs best of luck in sorting out this issue with FG. it is also a time for Drs to reflect on the practice of their professions 6 Likes |

Is residency program the bone of contention in this Strike? To what extent has the presidency and health ministry shown commitment to end this strike.? Why should they leave the substance and be chasing shadows? The minister refused to appear before the house commitee on health to sort out issues...the president himself have never said a word on the strike... The minister became a consultant orthopedic surgeon thru residency training....and now he wants to stop others. Is NMA synonymous with NARD? What of those in the employ of state governments? .....so who becomes consultants after the present batch retires? ......resident doctors are the backbone of teaching hospitals in their areas of specialty.. Where will the government get replacement...160000 I hear What is wrong with this government? Have we asked ourselves why India health system has improved....thats a third world country like us.. ....THAT'S BECAUSE OF GOVERNMENT FUNDING OF SPECIALIST TRAINING... .....AND OUR GOVERNMENT HERE IS SCRAPPING THEIRS... I USE TO DISAGREE WITH THE FACT THAT THIS GOVERNMENT IS CLUELESS....NOW I KNOW BETTER POSTERITY WII JUDGE US.. LET'S REMEMBER....NOT ALL SICKNESS WILL GIVE YOU THE LIBERTY OF TRAVELLING OUTSIDE... ....Some are actually time bound.....when the health system at home is destroyed...where will help come from at that time of urgent need.. I WEEP FOR THIS COUNTRY...WE NEED DIVINE INTERVENTION. 12 Likes |

phibah: Is residency program the bone of contention in this Strike? Don't weep for Nigeria in this, Rather weep for what the Drs have done to our health sector. Besides FG is not stopping residency, it is suspending it for the purpose of re assessing the challenges In the programme and organising it to be what it should be in CHARACTER AND LEARNING. 5 Likes |

armadeo: ARE YOU PUBLICLY AGREEING THAT SOMEONE ELSE IS IMPORTANT EVEN IN A SURGICAL OPERATION BESIDES THE DOCTOR? I DON'T THINK SO IT'S NOTHING MORE THAN A SANCTIMONIOUS ATTITUDE: PRAISE TO ME AND ERRORS TO OTHERS I REMEMBER A LEGAL CASE IN WHICH A DOCTOR HELD THAT IT WAS NOT HIS JOB TO CHECK HIS PRESCRIPTIONS FOR PROBLEMS BUT THAT OF A PHARMACIST. THEREFORE PLEADING THAT THE PHARMACIST BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS PRESCRIPTION ERROR THAT KILLED A PATIENT. AFTER THE COURT SESSION AM SURE HE WOULD TELL THE PUBLIC THE HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ASPECTS OF PATIENT CARE AND THAT THE PHARMACIST KNOWD NOTHING BUT HIS JOB SHOULD BE RESTRICTED TO DISHING OUT TO PATIENTS THE DOCTORS COMMAND 3 Likes |

esperiense: WHO standard for Doctor:Patient ratio is 1:600, Nigeria has one doctor per 6400 people instead and GEJ has assisted in alleviating it to one doctor per 650,000 nigerians. Yet some people are making ridiculous educative appraisal probably because they haven't lost a loved one to the cold hands of inavailability or striking of doctors.smhNo no no! The sacked resident doctors are still Nigerian doctors and so are at liberty to go into private practice here, the status quo unchanged. 1 Like |

okparaugo: My guy, it is your FG that is leaving its people to die. The strike has lingered because your FG is without a sensible leader, and now this is their solution. Take off your blinders. How can a reasonable FG fire its Docs that are clearly overworked and underpaid during an Ebola outbreak By the time this news filters out to the whole world, I bet you the US will request for their ZMAPP back. aztruth: If Docs didn't think anybody else was important, they would do everything by themselves. Which is not the case. A lot of team members have a problem with doing what the Doc says because "they are taking orders from him and they know more than he does". Everybody in their mind knows more than GEJ, but he is our president, and until that changes, we have to take orders from him. What is the sense in wasting resources like that? (Having Docs do everything) Economically, it costs too much to train a Doc, to have them doing certain things. It is like employing a university professor to teach a nursery school or a employ a hotel manager only to have him/her serve food. Everybody is important, and each member has a role to play. Most Docs are only saying that other players should play their part. Michel should play no 10 Enyeamma should stay at the goal post Musa should stop falling etc. 3 Likes |

It is interesting to read peoples opinion both the for and the against. At the end of the day the question to ask is - Is this to the advantage of the people? I am not sure stopping the residency training is a good move, it may solve the immediate problem of the strike but it also mean in years to come we will have fewer Specialist in Nigeria which will on the long run affect cost of medical care both public and private. Also the quality of health care will decline. We will then be depend on foreign trained specialist and doctors. 3 Likes |

Copied from a brother... If Nigerians are as ignorant as bathing with salt water to prevent Ebola, I do not expect them to understand the grave danger of the resident doctors' strike. And they wouldn't understand the ignorant decisions being made by our leaders also!!! 3 Likes |

bushdoc9919: On the resident's sack.... One of the best posts I have seen recently regarding the doctors' strike. This is the kind of progressive spirit that is needed in the medical profession today. Health care is about teaming together to achieve the ultimate goal, which is having the patient's care at heart. There is no way a patient can feel safe in any government hospital today because the people that have the responsibility of taking care of them cannot even work together. I keep saying this, no one is more important in the deliverance of health care to an admitted patient, including the cleaners. How quick a patient gets well is directly related to the weakest link in the health care delivery process. You should respect each other, form a fist, and get the government to her knees. And maybe, this solidarity will push the government to improve the facilities, amongst other things. Everybody wins when they work together. 4 Likes |

ottizz: Unfortunately, there is no order without laws. While everybody should work as a team, all professionals receive training which limits them to certain responsibilities. One big problem I have seen across board is that a lot of Nigerian health workers do not even know what their responsibilities are. And when they are told to do their parts, they feel like they are being ordered. If that re-education is not done, it will be almost impossible to get the warring factions to team together and have a common goal. 4 Likes |
Re: Breaking:- FG Sacks All Resident Doctors by Arosa(m): 12:39pm On Aug 15, 2014 |
The solution to all these problem is, Nigeria should put in place a universal health system, that requires all Nigerian citizen to pay health tax to fund/sustain it. (But the FG will have to kick start it with massive funding, it will later sustain itself from taxing) *importantly it should be run by a Nigerian in diaspora with experience in this area of work. |
