nuzo.... you have always been a mature poster but saying most doctors are incompetent is a bare face lie!
on the contrary, the little 'function' in the health sector today is BECAUSE of the doctors believe it or not.
nuzo,I don't think you and many Nigerians here know how bad things have really gone in the health sector.
if you knew, YOU WOULD WEEP.
zero equipment and training.
doctors try any which way to diagnose illnesses solely on our clinical skills.
thank god,by virtue of our training,we have a pretty good idea of a diagnosis just using our clinical skills.
these days medicine has advanced. machines are needed to help us give far more to our patients but your government has refused to equip the hospitals.
for how long are we going to continue like this?

but the more painful thing is that our people are illiterate and on top of that poor.
they can't fight for themselves. this strike whether you want to believe it or not is for them and not us.
out of the 24 demands, the money based demands are not more than 5.

My father has a friend with severe diabetes. He went to visit him at a teaching hospital, and was HORRIFIED. Oh God. He was chatting with me while he was there, he called me after he left, and he was still talking about it when he came home.

- open sewage
- RATS
- patients have to bring their own: drinking water, bedsheets, water to bathe, even toilet paper
- NO POWER

[6/26, 8:49 AM] Daddy: I came to visit a patient at a Teaching/Specialist hospital. It's the worst I've ever seen of a hospital
[6/26, 8:49 AM] Daddy: When coming to the hospital you must bring every and anything you will need with you
[6/26, 8:52 AM] Daddy: Including bedspread, water, cups, bucket, toilet tissue. There is no power so you must contend with the mosquitoes
[6/26, 8:52 AM] Me: My god
[6/26, 8:59 AM] Daddy: And this is a private hospital room where you pay very highly
[6/26, 8:59 AM] Daddy: I mean no electric power at all
[6/26, 8:59 AM] Daddy: You buy gloves, soap etc
[6/26, 9:01 AM] Me: That's too terrible for words
[6/26, 9:03 AM] Daddy: I'm happy I've come to see for myself. I'll never get admitted to a hospital here. It's a death warrant
[6/26, 9:04 AM] Me: No wonder anyone who has a choice travels for the smallest thing
[6/26, 9:04 AM] Daddy: Place stinks of raw and open sewage
[6/26, 9:05 AM] Me: My god.
[6/26, 9:13 AM] Daddy: You can bring your portable generator with power cord all over the floor
[6/26, 9:13 AM] Me: Jesus
[6/26, 9:16 AM] Daddy: You leave the place dead or more sick than you came in
[6/26, 9:16 AM] Me: Do I know the person you went to visit?
[6/26, 9:19 AM] Daddy: Ambassador ******. He slept in our house. The one who had the Toyota four runner
[6/26, 9:20 AM] Me: He's in the hospital? Why?
[6/26, 9:21 AM] Daddy: He's always talking of you
[6/26, 9:21 AM] Daddy: He has diabetes
[6/26, 9:24 AM] Daddy: His blood sugar shot up 3 times
[6/26, 9:25 AM] Me: Oh God. That's terrible
[6/26, 10:42 AM] Daddy: You also have to fight with rats inside room
[6/26, 11:05 AM] Me: Oh my god
[6/26, 11:05 AM] Me: Why would anyone pay for that?

This is a federal university teaching hospital. I went to that hospital myself once, to see my cousin, who had just given birth. Pitch black. Had to use my torchlight to walk about the campus. It's a hospital for crying out loud. If anything needs light, it's a damn hospital.

I do not blame the doctors. Are they miracle workers?

do you expect the govt to give u toilet roll or chase the rats away? Don't they have workers or cleaners in the hospital? I am sure they give the hospitals some money, but its been embezzled by some people. If this doctors had gone on strike courtesy of this ill state of hospitals and it been poorly equipped too, I would have wished them well or backed them, but the went on strike mostly for their selfish reasons. I was equally horrified. The man is very ill. After spending a sleepless first night at that hospital, he had to start going to his own house every night and returning in the morning. That's how bad it was.

And my father grew up in Nigeria. But he was shocked. For him to be so shocked at the state of today's healthcare, things have reached dangerous levels.

Most trade union organizations in Nigeria think they are indispensable. But the real indispensable sector is the security and they are not well paid. come to think of it, doctors have been out of work for months. Can anyone imagine the security Agencies going on strike for 5 days only, am sure the casualty level will be high and yet no one recognizes their efforts. Lets learn to address some of these Labour grievances in a more appropriate manner rather than plunging the public to untoward hardship.

Total number of practicing doctors in Nigeria is less than. 30 thousand, in a nation wit a population of over 160 million people. So tell me how many doctors do u tink will b in the military. ....lol. Jonathan and his bunch of fools are jokers. Other countries are looking for a way of producing and hiring more doctors and specialists, Nigeria is busy proscribing the only pathway that produces specialists doctors. Pls b4 u judge the doctors, I want u to Google and gather some facts about doctors pay in oda countries. Imagine doctors being paid 5k for hazard allowance and lecturers being paid 30k for hazard allowance, who is more prone to hazard. I bet u can send ur relative to go study medicine and be treated the way doctors are being treated. The end point of all these will b brain drain.

Why do I always end up explaining the obvious on NL?

The damn toilet paper is the least of the problems. Let me put it this way:

If the facility cannot afford to buy ordinary toilet paper for the patients, can it afford diagnostic equipment? Standard protective gear for staff? The cleaning staff you assume exist, can it afford that? Laboratory equipment. Training and workshops on current technology.

The best trained, unstressed, and well-paid doctors would not be able to provide satisfactory healthcare without those things, and without the residency programs, Nigerian doctors are now none of those things. It is DAMN frustrating to not be able to do what you spent your entire life training for.

While embezzlement does happen.....the hospitals themselves don't have enough money.

As an example....OAU gets less than 25 million US Dollars per annum as funding.

Massachusetts General Hospital in the US spent 750million dollars for research.

Also, in the US...most city authorities know that the more business they atrract to their city the more money they make...so water supply, power supply, refuse supply etc works(Which means a hopsital in say London UK won't be spending money on generating power) In Nigeria.... you get oil money regardless of what you do or not so...so why attract business to your city.(and by extension why make everything work? Plus, most people ,including govt agencies don't pay their utility bills...so utilities in your average Nigerian city are in a mess.Meaning a hospital has to spend a large chunk of its allocation just to make sure they generate power for vital things to work)

aztruth: Most Drs on this forum are now talking about the effect of the resident lay off on patients, where were all these thoughts about the patients when they went on strike for ego reasons?

If they are so concerned about patients, why did they not call off their strike when the nation was facing a national treat from ebola?

You See, FG has taken the only option available to reason by Sacking all residents though i hope it shd be only for the time being. if ASUU had told FG that they want only their members to occupy the Posts of VC, DVCs, Registrar, Bursar etc plus that no other person should be promoted beyond level 14, they would still have been on strike . And I tell you, FG would have privatized all the universities because it would have been the only feasible option.

For those who think that FG may be bluffing, REMEMBER SANUSI LAMIDO SANUSI. A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE!!!!

The real reason the Drs have continued on strike is because they want great things for themselves and beyond that, they want every other person in the health sector under their feet.

FG met their demands almost completely. What else should the FG had done?

Truth is that the welfare of patients and improvement of Health facilities are not on the Doctors mind any time! They have been going on strikes for how long now in the name of poor health facilities and each time they succeed in getting better pay or condition of service for themselves but not improved facilities. NIGERIANS ARE NOT FOOLS!!!

A word of advice for the Doctors that are talking of bailing out to practice in UK. PLS MAKE SURE YOU INSTITUTE STRIKE ACTION IN THE UK WHEN;
> You get there and find out that a other health workers are also consultants
>you discover that the head of the hospital is not a Doctor
>you discover that residents are considered as students and paid as such. Unlike in Nigeria where a resident doctor earns about the same with the highest earning nurse at the peak of his redidency. Consider yourself lucky if you earn at the peak of your residency what a starting nurse earns overseas.

Why do you want to destroy NIGERIA?

FG has taken so much crap from you guys (Drs). You only have to look at their reasons for going on strike to see that only a few of them may be reasonable. if majority were, they would not go on strike for some of those flimsy reasons

I wish all resident Drs best of luck in sorting out this issue with FG. it is also a time for Drs to reflect on the practice of their professions
I can perceive bitterness and envy in you, whether you like or not the doctor will forever be the head in the health sector,WHO heads have always been doctors, you know better than the oyibo people that introduced western medicine? ,in UK or US militaries only the doctor joins as a captain, every other. healthcare professional join as lieutenant,my friend ,we no be mate

It's a FEDERAL HOSPITAL. Who is supposed to finance it?
it been financed by the FEDERAL GOVT is undisputed. Do u know that they have lots of FG ministries that are lookin very beautiful?. Let's take for example when Goodluck Visited the police coll in Ikeja, he asked if the place is being inhabited by chicken cos it looks more like a poultry. In less than a month, the place was renovated. Do you think GEJ/FG would have complained if he had not been sendin money down here for their maintenance? And the money used for the renovation of the coll was not brought from the FG's account but from the heads in the Police there. That means the FG do allocate money to its ministries/parastatals/hospital/ agencies. We know that the allocation to health is small in Nigeria, but the little that is been given them, what have they so far done with it? Its just like former NEPA blamin FG for not givin light, what happens to all the money we pay as bills to them + all the money we pay to get new transformers, even though they have been paid for? If for real the hospitals are poorly funded and no stealin of money from any angle, then the Dr's can go on strike cos of that, and not for limiting JOHESU and other frivolous reasons. I could swear that if the FG visits most of our federal hospitals, most top people will lose their jobs

Nigeria is a country where mediocrity is celebrated and hard work is despised. Going from this I would ask some germaine questions.
1.Of what benefit and what clinical roles would a consultant pharmacist or nurse add to patient care within a hospital?
2.why did the govt decide to recognize an amorphous body called Johesu which consist of different professionals. rather than addressing the need and plausibility of the demands of each professional group rseparately rather than a gang up making widerange demands both reasonable and outright ludicrous.
3.why is the depth of knowledge with regards to patient care disregarded?pathology is the bedrock of medicine. and that separates medical training from other health disciplines. diseases start from pathophysiology.

4.why are doctors so despised and funny enough when the chips are down and the same group of people especially Johesu run cap in hand to seek the consultation of those people they despise. I see a lot of matrons do that in UCH.
5. The person who bears the maximum risk should take the most glory. is that not logical. the doctor takes even the blame for the error of a nurse. lab technologist. at the end of the day the patient would say " the doctors killed the patient albeit something he wasn't responsible for or just a natural progression of the disease. Every one hunts the most glory.
I honestly think we should address issue not sensationalizing things. only idiots make up their mind before hitting the real issues.

I have not yet taken a side. But, I would appreciate an argument that compares Nigeria with countries of same economic status.

The thing is....it costs a lot of money to run a general hosptial with all the trimmings so to speak.

For example....an average teaching hospital has to have at least ten operating theatres, sixteen dialysis machines, a standard ICU unit, a good lab with all the diagnostic equipment, several CT scanners and MRI, several ECG monitors, defibrillators, etc etc.

And all these cost money.

The problem is that the Govt runs too many hospitals. The health budget is inadequate. And the money allocated to the average teaching hospital is largely spent on making sure that there is light and water....because the power utility is in a mess.(Indeed you can spend millions of naira in a week just buying diesel for the hospital generators). And add the fact that when we admit a patient...the relations come too....and hospital facilities get overloaded.

There is one conclusion....and that is to either increase health care spending....or increase hospital fees or increase taxes. If you want A-grade hospitals....you have to pay A grade sums of money.!

And there has to be light and water 24/7.

deeobserver209: I used to support these doctors but when I got to learn how political their strike dived into and their superiority complex, I withdrew my support for them.
The main bone of contention is the demand for the establishment of the office of the 'Surgeon General of the Federation' which they argue should be established to take care of Health care matters in the country, just like the situation in the United States.
But things got crappy when they insist that only Doctors be appointed as a Surgeon General. Arguing that doctors are more qualified for the position considering the amount of time they spend on their course of study. This didn't go down well with the nurses who feel that such plan would only subjugate nurses to the background. The nurses were of the oppion that the office of the Surgeon General should be left wide open for whoever will be qualified to occupy, be it Nurse or a Doctor. They cite an example with the United States were the current Surgeon General is a Nurse.
The surgeon general of the US has always been a doctor. But in the US there are other surgeon generals like surgeon general of the US army etc which can be a non doctor.
U can Google that.

WHICH WAY NIGERIA?

HOW CAN GOVERNMENT RIDICULE THEMSELVES LIKE THIS?

SACKING 16000 DOCTORS IN A COUNTRY WITH LIMITED NO OF DOCTORS.

EVEN WHEN WHO HAS JUST RELEASED A STATEMENT THAT DEARTH OF HEALTH WORKERS IS ONE OF THE REASONS FOR INCREASED SPREAD OF EBOLA.

THE MINISTERS ARE BUSY GIVING PRESS CONFERENCES IN ABUJA AND EBOLA PATIENTS ARE DYING IN LAGOS

WHERE HAS SINCERITY GONE?

WHO IS FOOLING WHO?

THEY WANT TO INTIMIDATE DOCTORS YO SUBMIT.

OK O

WHERE HAS DIALOGUE GONE?

DOES PROF ONYEBUCHI CHUKWU REQUIRE THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON HEALTH TO REMIND HIM TO DO THE NEEDFUL?

EVEN THEN HE DIDN'T APPEAR.....EVEN THOUGH HE CHALLENGED DOCTOR'S TO 5 HOURS DEBATE.
YET HE RAN AWAY WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY CAME.

WHAT DOES THAT SUGGEST...FELLOW NIGERIANS..

JOIN ME TO RATIONALIZE THIS.

....AND I ASK AGAIN...

...WHICH WAY NIGERIA?
