Michaelemry: What of someone that study quantity survey or survey and geoinformatics dont they have job in the oil sector
bro...this are different fields i. e QS and geomatics.
QS: cost estimator, usually in construction.
Geoinformatics/geomatics: land survey and mapping, this is currently in high demand in the oil sands ,Alberta, Canada. I don't know for how long the demand would be sustained.

We are talking about what is obtainable in the sector. We also believe in God and divine favour. KNOW NOW THAT GOD CANNOT FAVOUR EVERYBODY AND NOT EVERYBODY HAS CONNECTION. Advice given by xfire and others are based on reality on ground. Depend only on divine favour and connection and see ur dreams crash like dat Dana plane. grin

I agree with you that one should not only depend on divine favour and connection to people, and my posting did not suggest that either exclusively. Doing that will smack laziness whereas God wants to bless our efforts. Those cases of persons I mentioned are not mere fabrication but part of the reality on ground in same sector. So all considerations are very important. Surprisingly none of these persons has ever said he/she was taken by his/her company by virtue of his/her expertise. They always give the story of their recruitment and selection amongst others as if there is divine intonation to it.

Nevertheless, I will still opine that it may not be correct to say GOD CANNOT FAVOUR EVERYBODY. Rather we can conveniently say GOD WILL NOT FAVOUR EVERYONE just as everybody does not necessarily have connection to Oil and Gas sector; unless we are doubting or arguing His ability here.

Well, like I mentioned, the demands are for experienced professionals. This is just to provide a guide for people that intend to delve into the sector in the foreseeable future. In many cases, the most important thing is to gain experience, even if it is in small oil firms. It doesn't always matter which role you start with. You can always switch once you are in the industry.

It is also to guide students who may be seeking to further their studies in an oil and gas relevant course
as a geologist, i recommend this post.

I am interested in this technical safety engineer. What certifications can help one fit in this role?
People mostly start with the wrong question - Asking about certifications! Being a technical safety / loss prevention engineer is not about certifications. It is more about experience. One needs to have indepth understanding of oil / gas processes and facilities, design and safety engineering philosophies. It takes years of experience to acquire, and it involves a lot of personal studies and diligence. Like I said, don't feel overwhelmed. The easiest way to kick start your career in that line is to start first as a facilities, I & E, process or machinery engineering. With a good engineering degree, you can get entry level positions in the fields. Sometimes, you can be lucky to be employed directly as a trainee safety engineer.
Some universities abroad offer safety engineering, though it is preferably for one to first gain basic engineering experience (not necessarily as a safety engineer) in the oil and gas before going for such an MSc in safety engineering.
There are certifications along the way but it will be meaningless to you without basic engineering experience. And certifications are not compulsory anyway. Companies generally value experience over certifications. Read this comment below on the thread:

Insanity:

Do you know what it means to be a welding engineer for IOCs? Do you know the work of safety engineers not HSE? They are not what you learn just through certifications. If you lucky to get involved in an EPCIC project in the upstream sector, you won't say you' re qualified again. That's where you see engineering in its purest form. you are on the right track though. It's not about certifications, there are soo many materials online you can read on steel construction fabrication in the and gas industry. Develop yourself everyday.

U can't be more right bro. I wonder where they got this Certification thing from? Ur degree certificate and experience counts far more than Certification. Companies may emphasise on certifications when dey recruit experienced hires even so they emphasise the required yrs of experience and den state dat certain certifications will b an added advantage. Re: Top 10 Most Demanded Jobs In The Oil And Gas Industry by dannisexy(m): 12:34pm On Aug 31, 2014
xfire: This is meant for those who desire a career in the oil and gas industry, especially for graduates and undergraduates who may want to be informed.

It's ironical that despite the high graduate unemployment rate and imminent glut in oil supply due increase production worldwide, there is actually a shortage of skilled and specialized labour in the global oil and gas industry. Unfortunately, the most in-demand occupations require specific skills that can only be acquired through experience.

As an oil and gas professional, I have followed the trend and revolution in the industry globally over the past few years. I also follow technological breakthroughs (especially the fracking technology in the US that is redefining the dynamics of the industry worldwide), oil discoveries and hiring patterns all over the world. Based on these trends and statistics, I have come up with a compilation of the top 10 in-demand occupations in the oil and gas industry. This is not limited to the to the industry in Nigeria. This is based on global demand.
I can guarantee that you will always get a quality job (somewhere around the world) if you have at least 5 years experience in the fields. If after gaining five years experience in any of the top 10 fields mentioned below, you lack a well-paying job for more than 6 months, you better go and see your pastor or imam for deliverance. Maybe na from village.

So, for your graduates desiring a lasting career in the oil and gas industry, you may consider these specialized fields. Just work on getting basic experience and you will become indispensable:

1) Geoscientists
2) drilling engineers/ drilling supervisors/driller

No (1) & (2) With recent oil and gas discoveries all around the world including Africa (East Africa and the Gulf of Guinea) and the aggressive exploration for oil all over the world, there is a very high demand for geoscientists (geologists and geophysicists). Geoscientists are involved in the exploration for oil and also in the initial stages after oil discovery. Drilling engineers/ drilling supervisors /drillers are involved in drilling operations (both for exploration and production). There is an shortage of experienced drilling engineers worldwide. A colleague of mine who is drilling engineer told me that he has already received two good offers via linkedIn (even without applying!). And he barely has 3 years experience!

3) subsea engineers
4) subsurface and completions engineers
5) pipeline and piping engineers

No (3) - (5) With oil companies going into the more uncertain but rewarding deepwater operations, there is a high demand for individuals with deepwater experience. Subsea engineers design, implement and maintain structures, tools and equipment used in underwater components of offshore oil and gas production. Pipeline engineers design and maintain subsea pipeline in offshore fields. You can't ignore subsurface/completions (well) engineers who ensure oil is produced at optimum level from oil wells.

6) Marine specialists / engineers
Marine specialists are very critical in oil and gas industry. You need marine professionals in offshore oil and gas operations. This is because of the constant use of marine vessels and boats for supply and transportation of crude oil, liquefied gas, food, equipment, etc. Besides, the increase in FPSO's (floating vessels for oil production in deepwater fields) all around the world requires the specialized skill of marine professionals to maintain vessel stability on the sea.
Believe me, marine specialists are on top of their world. I know a marine specialist that has worked for 3 major oil companies in Nigeria in the last 8 years.

7) Offshore maintenance technicians
These are the mechanical, electrical and instrumentation technicians working in rigs and production platforms both onshore and offshore. There is a high demand for them globally. And the minimum requirement to become one is just an OND.

(cool Truck drivers and crane operators
Yes, you read right! There is a high degree of lifting operations in the oil and gas industry and certified crane operators are in demand. Believe me, they earn well.
Truck drivers are in great demand too, especially in US and Canada where there is a significant onshore oil production. Truck are needed to move rigs and equipment, haul oil, water and sand away. The new fracking technology that has made USA self-sufficient in oil production requires constant evacuation of sand from drilling sites. The drivers are also expected to be mechanics, able to fix to fix their large trucks. With USA set to be a net exporter of oil to the global community (competing with the likes of Nigeria for markets), there is currently a shortage of truck drivers to meet her goal.

9) Tax accountant
The oil and gas industry is technology driven, thus the technical professionals are the most demanded. However, the only non-technical profession to break into the top 10 is accounting. With oil and gas companies always the easy targets for governments and public ministries in areas of tariffs, royalties, taxes and other deductions, the role of experienced oil and gas accountants become critical. There is a crying need for accountants (especially tax accountants), who can balance the books and ensure sustained profit.

10) Reservoir Engineers
Eventhough this list is in no particular order, I think reservoir engineers are actually No. 10 on the list. The reservoir engineers play a significant role in the oil and gas industry. Their job is identify oil and gas reserves and develop strategies to maximize recovery and conducting simulation studies to ensure the optimum recovery.

Other in-demand professions that did not make the top 10 list include technical safety engineers, environmental specialists, welding technicians, process engineers and machinery (mechanical) engineers

Thank you very much sir 4 this wonderful insight,
Plz am a graduate of Applied Geophysics.... Wat are the necessary courses am suppose 2 do + which area shuld I major in M.sc so as 2 be able 2 penetrate the Oil nd gas industry? Plz sir I realy need ur input! Thanks a lot, as I look 4ward to ur positive response.

Your B.Sc or B.Tech in Applied Geophysics is enough as long as u have a good grade.

With a degree in Applied Geophysics, I will rather advise you to go for a Masters (look for scholarship opportunities). Geoscientists have better opportunities with a Masters or even PhD. Companies like Exxon or Total won't even consider you if you don't have Masters. Chevron's is open to BSc but that they seem to be more disposed to candidates with MSc from good schools. Shell is also open to all, but even then prefer experienced hires with higher degrees. I can remember an experienced geophysicist friend of mine (works in National Geological Agency or so)who went for an interview for the position of experienced geophysicist. He has an MSc in geophysics. He didn't pass the interview but the panel members told him that they would have strongly considered him for employment if he had a PhD. He is presently on his PhD programme in Geophysics.
Many firms prefer to employ geoscientists at Masters level.

So I will advise you to enroll for MSc in Geophysics in a reputable school while you keep searching for good jobs. Keep both option open.

With the Exception of Mobil which prefers an M.Sc in Geosciences, most other Oil firms like: Total, NNPC, DPR, Shell, Chevron, NLNG, Sinopec and servicing firms like Schlumberger, Baker, PDL, Halliburton, Weatherford etc only need ur B.sc. If u have an M.sc fine. Jst know that employment at entry level is age bound. If u chase an M.Sc and pass d employable age limit, too bad. However, if u graduated with less than 2:1 & feel an M.sc will give u a better chance, all good. BUT KNOW THAT A FIRST DEGREE ALONE CAN BREAK U INTO THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR.

Thanks for the clarification. I actually have a degree in Chemical engrg and have experience as a safety officer but is yet to be exposed to safety engineering. I hope to specialize there.

It's an irony but that's somewhat true, especially in the industry. But people do get entry level jobs in the industry, though it's very competitive. I started in the industry as entry level graduate though I had previous experience in a notable non-oil firm so I was a bit 'shortchanged'. Money wasn't my major consideration then. It was just to get the required oil and gas experience. But I later moved to an IOC as a 'semi-entry level' staff. Most non-technical graduates can acquire the experience elsewhere though.
Don't be discouraged. Once you start acquiring the experience, you become less dispensable.
pls xfire guide me on i can acquire whatever skill dt can fetch me pay in O & G, i hv hnd in computer science, am of age! I don't mind any kind of job, even if it is menia or casual, atleast 2 start life afresh, if u cn connect me 4 job, i wll be grateful. Jst willing 2 do anytin 2 get pay! Tnx.
