Please I need your wisdom; I am currently in my final year studying for a B Tech in Project Management Technology. I would love to know what "extra things" to do or acquire to boost my chances of securing a job in the oil and gas industry. The buzz in my department right now is about acquiring a professional qualification like PMI's CAPM or PMP. Your insights will be very appreciated. Thank you.
By the way I am currently on a 2:1 standing.
Extra things to do:
1. Be that patient student, this not the time to bother yourself about where you wish to work. finish your first degree and make sure you actually graduate with a 2.1
2. Be that patient reader, go back to page 0 and read every comments, there are so many useful contributions that has directly and indirectly addressed your question

@all asking questions on what to study, read if possible eat to work in an oil and gas company are just bunch of lazy people. The op took his time to research and came up with this list of demanding jobs in IOC. Google is your friend you can find out anything you need to know about how your course relate to jobs in IOC

N.B. To get a job in an IOC fairly, you must be highly intelligent to pass through the stages of the recruitment

U don take am personal? grin

Of a truth some questions have become irritating as they have been answered time and again in earlier pages of this thread. If you just stumbled across this thread, please take the time to read through the entire thing from page 0 before asking your questions or making your contributions - the world would become a better place, believe me wink

Please don't just read page 0, then jump to the penultimate page and then the last page... come on guys, that's not the 2014 Oxford awon boys/babes definition of being smart

First off, I never knew it was even possible to have a first degree in Project Management. That been said, I guess you should be looking at three major key areas that are also "BIG" in the oil and gas industry (although they didnt make Xfire's list grin).

1. Project Department
2. Planning Department
3. Cost Controls Dept.

Lemme break it down alittle.. Most Oil and Gas companies, prefer to have Engineering graduates occupy their project departments, and the hierarchy in this department doesnt really favor graduates with non-engineering background. Most project Managers start off as "Project Engineers" or discipline engineers (Mechanical, Electrical, IC&A, subsea engineers etc) before making the climb-up to the "Manager" status.

In order words, your P.M.I, CAPM or P.M.P with zero experience and zero engineering acumen just wont cut it (for most oil and gas companies).

Cost controls department on the other hand is absolutely rare, as a matter of fact i've only heard of this position in SPDC and SNEPCO (dont know how true though), but ive seen for my self, these dept in some companies servicing SPDC. Its a very delicate department and (based on my little research) only people with extremely vast experience in Project management and Planning occupy these positions.

That leaves us with "Planning" department. In my opinion this is probably your best bet, to breaking into the oil & Gas industry (with respect to your 1st degree that is). Although (as expected most planners have engineering background), I know some "Planning Engineers" with zero engineering experience, making big bucks in the oil and gas industry.

I would advice you go learn the "PRIMAVERA" software (and may be MS-PROJECT) to boost your chances, as this is the number one software mostly used in these departments.

Except you want to venture into other areas like H.S.E, Safety etc, I believe to a very large extent that these areas i've highlighted, are probably the ones you should look to break into.

All the best sire....

What programms or courses should administrations look to enrolling in to be in the oil sector?
Re: Top 10 Most Demanded Jobs In The Oil And Gas Industry by Seened: 2:31pm On Sep 08, 2014
@ Babystathopoulos: Thank you for taking the time out to advise and share your thoughts with me and others.

@ Timmy: I find it hard to use words to express how grateful I am for the deep analysis you just gave but nevertheless: Thank you dearly.
About the software knowledge: one of the courses being offered in my department in my finals is Computer Based Project Management and we are focusing on MS Project extensively.
About you not being aware of PM as a first degree: I absolutely get that a lot from people. When I tell them my discipline they are like "pro...what...". LOL
The course is a five year programme in my school and you will be groomed in Engineering, Sciences, Management, Accounting, Operations Management etc. before capping it up with the real deal: Project Management. Needless to say you have to come from a Science secondary education background with a fair to high IQ to cope.
Once again: thank you two.

Wow...wonderful analysis.
I didn't mention it in my count because they are usually secondary disciplines, as you have stated. Any engineer with sufficient experience can hold that role. In most cases, cost control and planning roles are rotated amongst engineers to gain more exposure. Like you mentioned, engineers are usually more preferred for these roles but 'planning' seems to be more open to other professionals.
Every IOC has a project department (in one form or the other) which may include amongst other units, a cost control department (not just limited to Shell). In some cases, cost control is a separate department. They call it different names - cost engineering, project control, cost control, business services, production accounting, project business, etc. So Seened has more available options wink
Great analysis, once again

cheesy Oil and gas industry is big. Cuts across so many disciplines. Just that some disciplines are much higher in demand than others.
A postgraduate degree in a more relevant course will give you a better chance of 'fitting in' there.
Good luck

By the way, mathematics is a great course

A more relevant course like?

1. Yes, they do.

2. I presume you are still referring to a trainee engineer in an E & P coy. Typical work activity and/or duration depends on the company, department, job role and the trainee's boss. Not every coy even refers to fresh engineers as 'trainee' in the sense of that word.

I didn't acquired the said skills in 6months. 6 months is too short a time.
I said I'll pass for a Welding Engineer because i partook in Hyundai Heavy Industries 3 Months Welding training where i was certified to 2F, 3F and 3G welding Standard, a Safety Engineer because i took some Safety courses with ISPON, and finally a Design Engineer because i am very good with AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor[ i am almost through learning PDMS]. And by the Grace of God capped all the above with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.
all of these, but with bachelors in a basic medical science course, any chances in the oil n gas industry?

After the long NMA strike recently, they still want to leave hospital and come to oil industry.
They should not bother about all those courses that can be done in order to work there, geoscientists and engineers will do them all just to function in that area they may be needed.

Lol.. Abeg, you can answer them so that we can learn also...
